"Lyndsey Fifield, 40... recalled [Graham Platner] as 'cavalierly contemptuous of women’s emotions, of our "weakness."'"

"Ms. Fifield, who dated Mr. Platner from roughly 2013 to 2015, said that his offensive online posts 'reminded me of just how much he hated women.' Jenny Racicot, 41... who said she dated him casually off and on between 2019 and 2021, said the posts deepened her belief that he did not respect women. 'When I saw the old comments that he made online,' she said, 'I recognized a version of him that I had experiences with.'... Ms. Racicot also said that in 2021 he arrived at her house drunk, after she had asked him not to come over. She declined to elaborate, but said she cut off contact soon after that episode and found his behavior 'reckless' and 'unsettling.'"

If a squeaky-clean candidate like Talarico loses in Texas while a morally compromised one like Platner wins in Maine, it will tell us that character no longer carries the weight it once did.

The shift may have started with Clinton and Lewinsky, accelerated by Trump, but somewhere in the last thirty years, personal character stopped being decisive.

At the same time, in the populist search for “authenticity,” many voters now seem to embrace flawed candidates. They see Platner and think: He’s imperfect, just like me. He has sinned, just like I have. It’s the same logic many Evangelicals used for Trump: “I didn’t elect a saint.”

That’s the real question I’ll be watching: Does character still matter to American voters?

Given the huge huge huge reveal of saint Cesar Chavez's many sins, and given the recent ejection of Swalwell in California, selective TDS moral blindness is mostly done.

The Karens and the Woke care more about their own stilted form of moral purity than anyone else. The last 10 years hasn't been about Trump, rather, it's been about where the left stops in the tension between structure and morality versus nihilism and anarchy.

Platner would fit in with the Democrat caucus just fine. HIs moral failings would be nothing out of the ordinary for a Democrat Senator.

The *last* thing the left wants is to publicly stand up and speak out for the policies they support. You know- like keeping illegal alien rapists and murderers in the country.

Nazi paraphernalia used to be countercultural, for shock value, not to show National Socialist solidarity. The first generation of 1% bikers were WWII vets and wore Nazi merch that they took off dead Krauts. Their sons wore it just to frighten the squares. I remember seeing 80s punks with Nazi or at least German Army stuff that they got at surplus stores, again as asshole repellent rather than an ideological statement.

Then of course there was Private Schultz, Hogan's Heroes, and Benny Hill's frequent Nazi sketches.

At some point in the 90s and beyond, as being called a racist became a social death penalty, you couldn't wear Nazi stuff even ironically or to ridicule them. Remember one of Prince Harry's earliest scandals was going to a costume party dressed as a Nazi.

Platner could have just said he was late getting the memo. Worked for all the dems in blackface. CC, JSM

I’m of two minds. On the one hand, Democrats do this sort of thing all the time, and if this is the playing field we’re on now, then so be it. On the other hand, can we please vote on the issues instead of going through people’s personal lives. Too easy to distort and outright lie.

Quaestor said...

The fact that Platner is still welcomed by the Democratic** Party is conclusive evidence that they would rather have a full-blooded and authentic National Socialist within their upper echelon than anyone displaying their cosseted "sensitivity" toward women.

Platner's bald-faced lie that he didn't know his Totenkopf tattoo is an exact replica of the SS cap badge is only believable if he got the ink done in celebration of his metriculation into nursery school.

Suddenly, there's some sex "scandal" from the past that MUST be talked about. I hope voters have gotten wise to this nonsense.

I hated these kinds of accusations when they were made against Clarence Thomas and Brett Kavenaugh so I guess I have to hate them when they are lodged against Platner.

But I’d vote against him for dozens of policy issues anyway.

I can remember in the spring of 2016, Ben Shapiro and neo-cons tried to get Cory Lewendowski fired as Trump campaign manager. Y'see, Cory had gotten mad at reporter named Fields (Monica?) and "Threw her to the ground". She broke her broke her wrist, the police should've been called etc.

Then they found the video tape. Cory was walking fast, and blew right by Fields in a crowd. Never touched her. She didn't fall down. Ben Shapiro was lying as were all the other neo-cons. Result? Zero reprecussions. So when people tell me they care about "Truth in politics" or "Being decent to women" I know its bullshit - on stilts.

I read some of the NYT comments on the article. All is forgiven. There's no need to believe anything Fifield says because she's a Republican. Beyond this, there's the fact that he's running against Susan Collins who voted in support of Trump's Supreme Court and Cabinet picks. This is an unfathomable crime, and is far, far worse than anything :Platner is alleged to have done......I don't know if Platner will win this race, but, on the bright side, he's really cemented his bad boy image and will get a lot of action because of this. He should go to Hollywood to do some fund raising. He'd make out like crazy out there, and, with all due respect to the women of Maine, Hollywood is like a whole other world. The road of excess leads to the palace of wisdom.

Presidents and Administration VIPs are protected and kept safe by a SS detail. Lesser Progressive politicians are protected by a media detail that keeps the heat of exposure away.

Now that the Progressives have decided to pull Platner's media detail, what will they do if he prevails without them? He's a manly-man. He might just decide to be a Progressive Tom Bombadil - although I doubt he has that much strength of character.

We'll see, in a few days. I'm surprised they waited so long, and surprised these stories weren't processed and acted upon. Every sign points to a lack of money with these things. Rolling up US A.I.D. and the NGO funding was a brilliantly effective strike.

Prediction: Turnout will be low for the primary next week, and Janet Mills will win it, on name recognition. She is the Governor of Maine for the past 6+ years. She was the elected AG of Maine for 6 years prior to that, and in state-elected positions since 2002. She comes from a notable Maine political family and her brother, father, and grandfather have all held elected state offices.

She'll win on brand recognition.

How is that out of everything he did deeply disturbing? Apparently we are starting some kind of cult where you can never say a mean thing about a woman ever. You guys are picking the dumbest things to get angry about.

The man is a communist with a NAZI tattoo. That should be enough and really the only thing that matters in an election like this.

I was expecting a sexual assault allegation. So this is a nothing-burger.

Both Bill Clinton and Donald Trump are alleged to have raped women. Ted Kennedy accidentally killed a woman and his drunk ass ran away from the crime scene.

Grabbing a woman by the arm and pulling her out of a taxi is pretty innocent, really. He sounds like an asshole. But innocent of crimes against women.

The NYT buried one allegation way down in the 24th paragraph.

During one argument, she recalled, he twisted her arm behind her back, shoved her into a bedroom and held the door closed from the other side so she couldn’t get out, telling her to remain there until she was “calm.”

That sounds like he was trying to stop a fight. What was the argument about? Did you assault him? Was he drunk? Were you drunk?

If he's a Republican, the NYT puts "sex assault" or "violence against women" in the headline. But he's a Democrat, so that incident is unexplored. And it's buried under the two boozy lovebirds photograph. And the passionate love texts.

Saint Croix said...

I'm not sure I believe her when she says he was joking about having a Nazi tattoo. The man's got a Jewish step-father, a Jewish step-brother, and a Jewish sister-in-law.

It's not a swastika, it's a skull. I suspect a lot of people would see that tattoo and have no idea it was a Nazi symbol.

She doesn't seem to realize that she's alleging she was in a romantic relationship with a Nazi.

"Why were you dating a Nazi?"

You could ask that question to all of these women. The vast majority of them would probably say, "I had no idea he was a Nazi."

On the other hand, the damn idiot joked that he was a Communist online. He does seem to have a lot of mass murdering fantasies.
