Just as I was complaining that I'm weary of the topics in the news, I run across "Jeffrey Epstein’s Sperm May Have Survived Him."

I thought Hormuz and Platner and the slush fund and Jill Biden were getting tedious, and then I see, in The New York Times, "Jeffrey Epstein’s Sperm May Have Survived Him/Mr. Epstein banked his sperm several years before his death and said that if he died, it should be left in the control of his estate."

Why is this news?
Kimberly Mutcherson, a professor at Rutgers Law School who studies reproductive technology and bioethics, said that whether it was ethical for a sperm bank to accept sperm from a sex offender was a matter of debate in the fertility industry.... But... it’s reasonable to ask “whether this is a set of circumstances where people would find the use of this person’s sperm to be particularly odious.”... Under the ethical principles generally applied in the industry, the sperm could be used posthumously if Mr. Epstein explicitly indicated he would have wanted that, said Dr. Louise King, the director of reproductive bioethics at Harvard Medical School.... People close to Mr. Epstein said shortly before his death that he had dreamed of widely spreading his DNA by impregnating women at his New Mexico ranch....

A commenter over there says: "Release the Epstein Vials?

The Times links to its own report from 2019: "Jeffrey Epstein Hoped to Seed Human Race With His DNA."

Mr. Epstein’s vision reflected his longstanding fascination with what has become known as transhumanism: the science of improving the human population through technologies like genetic engineering and artificial intelligence. Critics have likened transhumanism to a modern-day version of eugenics, the discredited field of improving the human race through controlled breeding.

Ironically, the notion that his sperm shouldn't be used because he was "particularly odious" is itself eugenics.

"Hello. Are you the executor of Mr. Epstein's estate?"
"Yes I am."
"Here you go."
"You couldn't have put this in a jar?"

Agreed that deciding the ethics beyond one’s personal choice is eugenics. Interesting that ethicists, that might ordinarily argue one’s environment plays a major role in their behaviors, would find ethical problems with a person’s sperm.

"[E]ugenics, the discredited field of improving the human race through controlled breeding . . ."

I'm not sure the right word here is "discredited."

Certainly "disfavored" would work, as it is widely believed that the social costs of trying to implement eugenics are too high a trade-off to accept.

But the proposition that it wouldn't work, as a biological matter, is not something that appears to be argued. It may commonly be asserted, but not usually with biological argument offered in support of that proposition. Asserted more as a truism.

What genetically-influenced factors might be promoted through eugenics, and why would such promotion not work (assuming the social circumstances permitted it to be tried)? Athletic ability? Cognitive ability? Disease resistance? Long life expectancy?

I'm not arguing for implementing eugenics, just trying to clarify why it is dismissed as "discredited" (at least in Western-style societies).

Perhaps one of the NY edgy progressive artists can take it and use in for art. Splash it all over a blue dress, and pour resin over it.

Oh, ick! I do not want to be thinking of Epstein’s sperm, of all things, spread or otherwise. I’m susceptible to earworms (so I’m still humming 1920s pop, for example, pursuant to rcocean’s link in another thread today). I do not need to add a spermworm! Especially one generated by Epstein. OMG.

[slightly horrified lol]

Oh, it's a matter of "debate" among sperm banks whether to offer a non-disclosed line of rapist sperm? When I was in college, only the perviest guys I knew sold sperm and then told anyone about it. I bet there's a heck of a lot of rapist sperm swimming around in those spoo(spelling?) tubes.

Do men have to have background checks to sell sperm? And do clients have access to the information in them? I think the Times, or maybe it was The Daily Mail -- whichever -- had an article recently about how men with Ivy League degrees, certain height, health, and success could sell their sperm for up to something like 25K a pop.

So let's not pretend this isn't eugenics, #1. #2, I don't see how it's ethical to sell sperm from sex criminals to unwitting buyers. That's eugenics too, I realize.

At the very least, there should be a law to disclose if the sperm came from a Kennedy.

It made me start wondering if a woman would bet on nurture over nature for a share of his estate. I decided that one who would is probably as ethically challenged as he was, so it wouldn't matter if nature or nurture won out, a child raised by that woman wouldn't have much of a chance.

Dave Begley said...

I'm sure that this has been decided already by a court somewhere, but could the children born from artificial insemination be considered his heirs for purposes of inheritance?

As I recall, he has one brother. He never married Maxwell. Is there a pending probate case? Trust administration? Has the probate estate or trust administration been closed?

This could be a huge money making scheme. I think after payment to creditors, there is still equity in his estate.

Movie title: "The Boys of Epstein Island."

Too bad Gregory Peck, James Mason, and Laurence "Big Larry" Olivier are all long gone. There would have been roles for them all. (Sidebar: Imagine those three distinguished actors wrapping up their careers with that miserable sticker. The money must have been outrageously sweet. Anne Meara had a bit part, as did Lilli Palmer, and Rosemary Harris. Stars everywhere and not a stitch of non-insane plot to shield them from the critics. Did I ever mention I met Miss Harris in a tackroom in Clemmons, North Carolina? She wanted my opinion on her daughter's forward seat equitation. There, I've mentioned it.)

Fun Facts: The Boys from Brazil introduced Steve Guttenberg, a major war crime in itself, and the guy who played Herr Big Cheese Crazy Mustache Man himself in Downfall, Bruno Ganz as the geneticist.

Don't sperm banks try to screen out donors with family histories of genetic diseases and cancer? Don't the recipients want donors that are tall, athletic, and intelligent? Sperm banks are the all about Eugenics.

Why is this news?

Why indeed? They are trying to inflate the animus against Jeffery Epstein. They'd like someone to bring a lawsuit against his estate seeking to destroy his genetic legacy before someone else tries to experimentally create a mathematician in a petri dish, preferably, an action brought by someone extremely stupid and nauseatingly voluble, someone like Joy Behar, for example.

My advice to anyone willing to listen to reason, which excludes the NYT target audience entirely: Relax. Moral turpitude is not inheritable. Hitler's mom was a nice lady -- stupid, but nice. Daddy Hitler was a small-time shit, but he sired two other Hitlers who relatively nice... and stupid, but not monsters. An aptitude for mathematics may be inheritable, but not very. An in vitro spawn of Epstein would probably be bright and relatively good-looking, the rest is up to the kid himself, and the rest of us generally. I have a list of things parents can do the help a kid grow to be decent and responsible, but no one ever listens to me...

"Particularly odious"? Epstein?

I mean, I'm not defending him, believe me - I think Trump did absolutely the right thing in cutting him out once his nature became clear. But "particularly odious"? It seems that he was a hebephile, for sure, and maybe a trafficker of underage but pubescent girls, and a perv who liked underage but pubescent girls to give him massages, though aside from one incident in which a girl on the literal eve of her 18th birthday, who had been giving him massages for the past year, says he finally wanted to, and did, have sex with her, I don't think anyone else has even claimed to have had sex with him, with or without her consent. Am I not keeping up? All this is from Matt Taibbi a couple of months ago, a man who usually does his research, and recreated from memory here, so I may indeed be either behind the times or misremembering.

But if I am keeping up, then he wasn't even Humbert Humbert - a pedophile who focused his "love" on one prepubescent child - much less an actual pedophile serial or mass rapist, though everyone seems to escalate his wrongdoings and general grossness into that category.

Over a weekend.

Of course it's a risky and doomed to fail gambit since after the release of the Epstein files we found that the only people who groomed with Epstein were all leftists like the Hutt crime boss blob Pritzkers, Obama WH lawyers, the Clintons, leftist socialist hackdemicks including Choamsky, and European globalist socialists like Der Starmer and the UK Labours, and Macron and his Neostalinist pedophile islamist apologists.
