"I have just been informed by our Great Military that last night the Iranians shot down one of our highly sophisticated Apache Helicopters while patrolling over the Strait of Hormuz."

"There were two pilots involved, both are safe and uninjured. Nevertheless, the United States must, of necessity, respond to this attack. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP"

That's Trump, at Truth Social, 3 hours ago.

Too bad. But it'd be better if we weren't "flying helicopters" over the straits of hormuz. Go look at a map, the international waters are very narrow, and right next to it is Iran. I wonder if we were in Iranian territory.

Assume Iran gets a nuclear bomb. Won't that only mean that like North Korea they won't have to worry about an attack from outside? First use would certainly be suicide for the entire country. Say what you want about their leadership but they aren't idiots. The past few months prove that.

Regardless. I believe we should do what we can within reason to prevent them from developing a bomb. A ground invasion as Dave B. advocates is not within reason. The country has 90 million people.

How many US troops would die in the effort Dave? How many dead US troops are acceptable to you Dave? 5,000? 50,000? 200,000?

That's what I think. Meanwhile the Israelis clean out Hezbollah, the Chicoms are getting squeezed, Lloyds of London dies on the vine, and the world buys oil from Uncle Sam.

The alternatives are to bomb Iran, kill civilians, etc. Which benefits no one; or to cave, which benefits Democrats and the mullahs.

North Korea might use their nuclear bombs as a "deterrent" against invasion but it doesn't have a "death cult" running their country. There is no reason to worry they might be suicidal.

The IRGC’s founding idea is that society should be governed under an Islamic revolutionary framework led ultimately by religious authority (during the occultation of the 12th Imam). If the Islamic Republic is not just a state but a sacred political order, defending it becomes a religious duty.

Under the doctrine of Velayat-e Faqih, the Islamic Republic is not viewed as merely one government among many, they represent something much bigger. The idea is:
God established guidance through the Imams.
The 12th Imam is absent. But will return.
Legitimate Islamic authority (the IRGC) must preserve society until his return.
If that system is attacked, defenders can frame resistance as protecting something religiously important, not just politically useful. The Shi’a historical narrative emphasizes resistance to oppression. That's represented by Israel and the US.
A central event in Shi’a identity is Battle of Karbala, where Husayn ibn Ali was killed after opposing what Shi’a tradition views as illegitimate rule. That event is enormously influential.
A recurring lesson drawn in revolutionary Iranian thought is:
standing against injustice can require sacrifice.
The IRGC and revolutionary rhetoric often invoke Karbala symbolically. “If preserving Islamic governance and resisting oppression are religious obligations, force can become morally permissible in their defense.” (chatgpt)
Indeed, the sacrifice of their own lives is justified if not required.

Hamas are animals. The extent that they are allowed to exist in Gaza in any way shape or form makes everyone in Gaza part of the problem.

The problem for people like you is that Israel is second or third on number of Palestinians killed. Egypt is right there with Israel on the scoreboard for palestinians killed and Jordan has killed an order of magnitude more Palestinians than Israel has.

This is because the PLO/Palestinians adopted anarcho-socialist philosophy and they steal and murder and rape wherever they go. Everyone in the region hates them. That’s weird, we’re hitting a bunch of stuff that was supposed to be 100% destroyed.

We're not in Trump II but rather in the third term of Bush II, a place American voters did not want to go. This is like more like the Iraq Surge except this time there is no light at the end of the tunnel, just endless conflict.

Both Netanyahu's reality and Trump's reality are failing at the same time. Heightened global instability that destabilizes global growth will be a long-lasting outcome. That's a pretty big global failure for what should be a much more localized regional failure. The negative consequences of the Iran war far exceed those of Afghanistan and Iraq. Netanyahu destroyed the two-state solution, possibly for all time, while Trump has probably severed for all time a regional peace based on an expanded Abraham Accord. The Gaza peace project is a house of cards out of a very bad TV series, and increasingly perceived pathetic chapter in another never-ending tragedy. Lebanon appears to be on the same trajectory.

George W. Bush and his neoconservative-infused administration turned away from the two-state solution and gave the Israeli expansionists hope to achieve their vision. Neither saw the failure intrinsic to the situation.

The coming Israeli election is likely to yield another non-solution, a narrow majority for more failure.

Where will future American elections take American policy? Major change or more failure?

America now has with Trump a foreign policy where one can repeatedly say with some assurance that things are likely to get worse. That premise keeps getting validated.

Vance said...

I'll criticize Trump and Netanyahu here. They are too weak, tyring too much to be nice. They should just say screw it and load up the B-52 with the cluster bombs and just go full Linebacker II on Gaza, Hezbollah, and Iran's military. Fight to win, and erase the rotten civilizations that are there. We nuked Japan to get rid of their murder cult running the country before WWII. I hope it doesn't come to that... but if so, let's do it. No peace is possible with the Hamas and murderous Islamic clerics in charge of Iran. Just erase them... or it will never, ever stop.

The Middle East is more aligned with us than in modern history.

I wish trump would remove all oil sanctions from Russia and let them increase production.

The only “loss” I see is minor inflation ( that will settle out ) and the midterms.

In the U.S. there are often attempts to pin the blame on Netanyahu for Israel's unrelenting and self-destructive wars of annexation since 2023. However, it is clear that Israeli society has shifted to the extreme far-right over the past 20 years and whoever follows Netanyahu will be no less extreme than him -- and probably even more extreme.

Where things are likely to be different is with the U.S.-Israel relationship. Netanyahu has enjoyed a relatively free-hand because he has understood the U.S. political system and its pressure points. He has had an especially well developed understanding of pressure points with Biden and Trump.

The way Netanyahu has operated is frankly pretty sleazy, but at least in the short-term it is very effective. I don't think any of his potential successors are likely to be nearly as successful at influencing future U.S. administrations. Part of it is due to generational change. Part of this is a consequence of a backlash that is likely to come in response to the extremely violent, indiscriminate, and very public nature of the Israel response to the Oct 7, 2023 attacks, and also due to the increasingly authoritarian and overt efforts to suppress opposition to Israel's policy outside of Israel.

As far as "who calls the shots", Israel is in the driver's seat right now and will likely be for the near-term. However, the car is fueled by gas and technology from the U.S. with an assist from Germany, the UK, and the EU with almost all of the support at this point happening at an elite level in ways that are at odds with public sentiment. Trump may be dozing away half the time in the back seat, but he is still in the vehicle for the time being as well.

In politics and in life, nothing last forever. People who talk about "eternal enmity" between peoples and nations are deluded. The same is true when it comes to "unbreakable friendship". Of course, things change. The current reality today, will not be the reality tomorrow.

Vance said...

You know who achieved peace with Muslims? Ghengis Khan. Vlad Tepes. King Sobieck. Charles Martel. Queen Isabella of Spain. Israel did a few times, for a short while. How? By killing lots and lots of Muslims first, until the survivors sued for peace. We had to do the same in Tripoli with the Marines early on. The entire history of Islamic countries shows that the only way to get peace is by killing a whole bunch of Muslims first... and then the survivors want peace. Surrender and appeasement NEVER works. Yet Democrats and leftists and Joooo haters keep telling us that we have to surrender and let Muslims do whatever they want and never, ever fight back... ever.
