"By 2006 'I was no longer, in any real sense, a Christian.' Instead, he took up the winner-takes-all, blessed-are-the-rich philosophy of Ayn Rand, which he summarises as 'stop whining, stop praying, and start working your ass off.' Hers was the materialistic faith he followed through Ohio State University and most of Yale Law School, where they regarded Christianity as 'a weird superstition.' He now thinks his loss of faith was not primarily intellectual, but the inevitable result of transferring his political allegiance to an ungodly liberal elite. 'It was the equivalent of divorce. I was severing myself from my roots.' But then, around 2014, after he’d fallen in love and got married, he began to see that by becoming 'so focused on winning the game of life… I had neglected the deeper truth.'"
From "God, guns and 'Mamaw' — JD Vance’s memoir is part rant, part sermon/In Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith, the US vice-president explains why the liberal elite pushed him into the arms of the Church — and Donald Trump" (London Times).

blessed-are-the-rich philosophy of Ayn Rand
Can anyone provide a citation for this? Ayn Rand's philosophy is Objectivism and she was an atheist. "Blessed are the rich" is usually misattributed to Jesus' Sermon on the Mount (where he actually said "blessed are the poor in spirit", which is an entirely different sentiment). Google AI says: "Ayn Rand never actually wrote or said "blessed are the rich." If she never said it or wrote it, how could it be her philosophy?
The writers at the extremist leftwing news outlets - ugh.
embarrassing.
the left whine about ambition.. But celebrate their blood thirsty power whoreyness.
'part rant, part sermon' eh? And I guess we know how the lofty critic feels about both of those, don't we?
Meanwhile, The Independent, aso from the U.K., titles its story like this: "Vance’s book cover contains an embarrassing blunder as he is ready to talk about his conversion to Catholicism...."
OnMiGod, the Vice President's book is flawed, beyond redemption because he's made a terrible, embarrassing blunder ! (you might suppose). You know what it is?
The picture of the church on the cover of the book is not a Catholic Church. That's it. That's the embarrassing blunder.
If this exact story was about Obama - it would be written in soft gushing tones.
The Left is just now getting around to reading Vance's book? Half-assed as always.
I doubt that Rand ever wrote "blessed are the rich," but she might have appreciated someone's quip that her philosphy could be summed up as "Truth is Booty, and Booty Truth."
One of my history profs, later a colleague, said that when he was in college he read one of her books and sent her a letter asking for clarification on a couple of points.
Her reply was that his letter was a perfect example of the failure of American education, and good day to him.
Ouch!
Vance is the only person in the field for the next election who looks remotely presidential. That guy from California just looks like he wants it for all the wrong reasons.
Ayn Rand has a long speech in Atlas Shrugged about the meaning of money. This is where the sentiment comes from as people don't read it and infer it is the same as Gordon Gecko saying "Greed is good."
Amazing to see her name in print at all these days.
Leland, understand that the line in the review is a quip. It accurately summarizes an aspect of Rand's ideas and behavior, though. She wore dollar sign jewelry.
tommyesq, Vance has a *new* book just out because he is thinking about running for president. The Left is not just now getting around to reading Hillbilly Elegy.
It may be a quip, but it is made in ignorance to her actual philosophy. She does write about the dollar sign, which her character describes as representing the US (both letters super imposed on each other). Your quip that she wore dollar sign jewelry can also be described by Rand as wearing the initials of the United States.
Rand was a materialist in a long where altruism had become fatal
There is one Faith that matters inshallah and Cristianity is not it for the Thunderer
Russia was steeped in orthodox faith but anong the intellectual clas there was another environment as seem in belys petersburg
They cross max veber and aym rand whats next thorsten veblen
Walked 10.45 miles today. Not bad for 71. Was supposed to be 10 but I took a side detour on the return trip to purchase and enjoy an orange sherbet-vanilla twisty cone.
So it's been >24 hours- and no update, at all, on the projected UFC attack at the White House. And- online discussion is barely existent. By tomorrow it looks like it will be forgotten altogether. Weird.
Vance was wonderfully jolly & jocular yesterday on Gutfeld, with regulars Kat & Tyrus, plus occasional guest Kennedy. One of best episodes this year IMO. One segment focused his book and return to faith.
I have no idea why Anne is now reading the London Times for news about America? I dunno, maybe because Acela Corridor media was anti-Conservative/Republican enough? Gotta go to the Londinstan Islamic mouthpiece?
Daddy likes JD better for now. Marco needs to deliver Cuba to get on top of his kid brother.
My problem with Rand’s philosophy is that she defines man as a rational animal, and then pretty much ignores the animal part.
"I have no idea why Anne is now reading the London Times"
I can help out with your confusion here. The UK papers often have much better reporting of US political news than mainstream American newspapers. They also tend to have a wider perspective, which can be interesting. Does that help?
A Dominican gave JD instructions and converted him. Good job!
'part rant, part sermon' eh? And I guess we know how the lofty critic feels about both of those, don't we?
Just what I was thinking. Is there any reason to read this book, when we're told this about it?
Ironically, I had little interest in it, and now I do.
