"And I think they're, uh, I think they're really good. They love their country. You know, you talk about regime change, nobody will say that. But I guess that's, look, their one set of leaders is all gone. Their second set of leaders is all gone. Their third set of leaders a little bit gone. But for the most part, and frankly, I think that's regime change. I think they're going to behave much differently. I think they see a different way of life that they were never exposed to. So the one thing I didn't want to see is I didn't want to see economic catastrophe. If you kept this going, that could have happened. But all I know is every time we talked about the possibility of peace, the stock market shot up like a rocket ship. It never went down. They didn't like it. The people, you know, the stock market is more brilliant than anybody there is, including the people on the stage, other than me, of course.... What do you think, Scott? Is the stock market more brilliant than you?... And, uh, every time we said something amazing like we're going to settle, it would go up. And every time we said something negative like — guess what? — we're not going to be able to settle. It would go down.... And the one president I did not want to be was the late great Herbert Hoover. I didn't want that. And who knows what would have happened, but bad things happen. ..."

Trump just said that we were one month from running out of oil, Donald Trump said that. I was worried that he was so under the control of a foreign power that had ordered Trump, “Let’s you and him fight.” This is the man I voted for.
By the way, support for that particular foreign power among Republicans under 50 has dropped from +16 to -28. It’s just Boomer conservatives ready to crash the US into the rock for it.
Couldn’t have picked a more fitting place to sign a declaration of unconditional surrender than Versailles.
By and large, a total military debacle does not trigger a stock market rally......We'll see how it works out, but the untimely death of so many of their contemporaries is bound to have an influence on the thinking of the current leadership.......The current regime killed more people in Iran to keep in power than we killed to remove them from power. I don't think that that melancholy fact has escaped the notice of most people in Iran.
I think they're going to behave much differently.
There's the crux of the matter. We shall see.

While there is such a thing as a "forever war" (see Muslims vs Jews), there is no such thing as a "forever peace". The best you can get is a longer ceasefire. Trump got us a longer ceasefire. If you want to bitch and moan about it, go ahead. I'm going to be thankful for it and enjoy it while it lasts.
I don't think they're good. They may be an improvement from the US perspective. From the perspective of the Iranian people, not so much. They'll have to do some things differently.
The purpose of having nukes was to prevent their much more powerful and capable enemies from being able to attack them without fear. If pursuing nukes will reliably bring about the result that nukes were supposed to prevent in the first place, well, maybe they will do some things differently going forward.
My whole life we were in a “temporary ceasefire” with North Korea. It started getting a little squirrelly just before Trump 45 reset us back to mostly peaceful ceasefire status. And Kim already has nukes. So I’ll give the President some room to work this one out.
They have already indicated they want to be different, at least for a while. The recent bombing lasted just two nights before they cried uncle and agreed to sign the MOU. Let’s see how long this lasts.
Crushing Iran’s ability to make a nuke sounds appealing, but just delays the inevitable. They (or some other crazed Middle East country) will just buy one off Temu.
...if you loathe finance you hate him talking about equity markets but he’s telling a basic truth that there is a predictive nature of markets that cuts through the bullshit of propaganda and hopium and Tom Friedman style stupid. It misses the element that markets hate uncertainty and so hints at the resolution of war foster optimism. Also keep in mind Goldman’s DC office is probably second only to the CIA in ‘intelligence gathering’…
If Iran’s leadership loved their country, they wouldn’t have slaughtered 42,000 protestors in the streets.
Surrender and declare victory! This is what everyone predicted.
…it only reinforced my non-conclusion conclusion that foreign relations are messy and I know nothing about high probability policy which is at most slightly less than the knowledge of every expert everywhere…
The pundits were all so sure that we were inevitably headed to a $200/bbl oil crisis by mid-summer. The markets, on the other hand, were quite skeptical. Of course the markets were right.
As is so often the case, when a journalist predicts an outlier outcome with certainty, my response is:
"well of course you've bet on that outcome on one of the many markets that allow you to express that view. If you are right you will make a fortune".
Somehow this never happens.

Per Mike, upthread, the Cold War is a reasonable analog. In each case we fell out with a former friend/ally. Russia in the late 1940's, Iran 30 years later. Each had bluster and variable degrees of ideology as motivators. Each fought largely by proxy. In the Cold War there were successes and setback. Berlin Airlift, Vietnam, and some draws like Korea.
In the end Communism collapsed. Some of the former proxies are respectable nations now, Vietnam for instance. On the big plus side of the ledger, despite some near misses, no city was nuked. On the TBD side, what has emerged in Russia and their proxy/frenemy China is not by any measure great.
The Cold War lasted for decades. The slightly warmer struggle with Islamic theocracy likewise. Patience. There will be ups and downs. Keep Iran from having a deliverable nuke. Build those pipelines across the Saudi desert to reduce the importance of Hormuz. See if you can avoid electing potatoes or idiots in the next few Presidential cycles. The world can get better.
Trump has been hitting Iran with a stick. Now he has shown the regime a carrot. We can hope they choose the carrot, but let's not put the stick down just yet.
Shart of a deal.
I don't see how we get "regime change" in Iran without killing 5 to 10 million people.
When viewed through the "Trump lens" we actually won the Vietnam War because killed more Vietnamese people they they killed of ours and we broke lot's their stuff. And the commie regime that was left wasn't all that bad, was it? That's winning a war, right?
Trump just won two wars at once! He's the only President in history to do that.
I would say communism went dormant look at recent developments in this country

Crazy as this may sound nukes will become less relevant as time goes on. Paired with and in addition to spicy loitering autonomous doritos of doom, there are other socioeconomic Weapons of Max Disruption. All of which are cheaper, infinitely more accessible and most importantly, actually usable.
Iran must never have a nuclear weapon. Great....it didn't need one.
Today, I’m less impressed with those who nominally claim we should strive for peace and only do measured, proportional responses. They have been given exactly what they claim to want, and their first act is to call it a loss and crow that Trump is weak.

Forty-seven years. Trump is ending what others let fester as a forever war for forty-fucking-seven years and if you disagree then it’s on you to explain what the JCPOA was other than an attempt by Obama to end the conflict. What exactly was Obama’s intention?

It is hilarious to watch people compare this to "Obama's deal."
As if there is any similarity whatsoever.
The world is night and day different after this war. Trump has remade the entire post WWII world order in a few short months.
You people who pretend differently are just stupid.
Iran couldn't hurt the US directly, but it could sure hurt the Europeans, enough to crash the world economy. It's the military weakness and economic fragility of the EU that's saving what's left of the Iranian regime right now. That's why they're so happy with Trump.
I don't see how we get "regime change" in Iran without killing 5 to 10 million people.
The cost of forcing regime change, maybe. The Iranian regime will now have to confront its internal and regional struggles and choose wisely to join the world economy with the help of its Sunni neighbors who want to see change for their own protection. While the rest of the world restores reserves and circumvents the Straight with pipelines, etc. Iran’s rebuilding can’t keep pace with the rest of the world’s ability to inflict a new round of punishment.
Not all wins are clear cut victories, especially as you point out when the costs are considered. In many ways, the old regime tenaciously hanging on just became Iran’s problem, not ours.
Anyone with experience in the Mideast knows that Iran will violate the MOU at an opportune time. So the agreement is meaningless.
What is important is what Trump does when they violate the agreement.
I do find it interesting that all of the one-note doomleaders cannot find the words to express their degree of comfort with a nuclear-equipped Iran, nor can they find the words to support their characterization of unilateral surrender by the US, or rather 'Trump'. I guess they imagine somebody, somewhere, will take their word for it - since their word carries such a weighty confidence.
The forbearance of the other Middle-Eastern neighbors has been remarkable I think. Maybe not least because of the Abraham Accords and the power of diplomacy. But isn't it odd, that these Arab nations, known for their tribal belligerence, have demonstrated they can get along on an uneasy protocol of conditional trust that includes pretty much everybody in the region except Iran? Including Israelis? Funny how Iran is somehow granted different status to be the black sheep sh*t-stirrer, until recently.
I don't have much hope for the peace deal. Iranian theocrats and the IRGC are a treacherous bunch, and they have a system of internal advancement that has been established for generations. I think anybody that has been in the system for any length of time is tainted in their way of thinking. They've adopted a different posture to survive, but their DNA will give them away, in time. Unlike their neighbors, Iranian leaders are determined to dominate, using religion as their cudgel.
We'll see.
Too many talking heads look at the score in the 4th inning and say "It's 3-1" The game is over and we lost.
The gulf states have been hit hardest and they will take thar into account
Whether it is convenient for your world view to admit it or not, de facto regime change occurred in the first minute of the war. The leadership of the other side was killed. Then we killed the second string. If you take out the first and tsecond level of either the Democrat or the Republican Party in the USA, what you get next is not going to be the same. You may like it more or not, but it will not be the same. This is in the nature of human organizations. A corporation that loses it CEO, Board of Directors and Executive VPs all at once is not the same company. The notion that the Iranians had aligned leaders in lockstep four and five deep for every position is preposterous. The twos always think they can do better than the ones. The threes always think they can do better than the twos. Always.
The current regime killed more people in Iran to keep in power than we killed to remove them from power.

The Hoover reference is interesting. I am a fan of Hoover the man, though I agree his presidency could have been more successful. I disagree that it was anywhere near as unsuccessful as commonly portrayed.
But as builders and creators, Hoover and Trump are more or less in the same class. Both build hugely successful and lucrative businesses. Hoover in mining, Trump in real estate. Both started out at the top, never running for anything other than president and both winning on the first try.
Both very wealthy and could have sat back and retired instead of running.
Neither took the presidential salary. Or any other salary after leaving his company to organize food relief in 1914 in Hoover's case.

That's really good!
In 1968 we beat the VietCong so badly in the Tet offensive that they were never able to field a significant force again. Walter Cronkite and others in the "You can't hate them enough" press portrayed it as a great loss.
In 1971, we, with the SVNA beat the north Vietnamese so badly that it took them 3 years of regrouping to mount another offensive. But nobody knows about that.
When they did, the SVNA was beating them until they ran out of ammunition because Dems in Congress refused to supply more. There were less than US 100 troops in VN at that time.
That resulted in the famous picture of the helicopter evacuation that TO THIS DAY the press insists was at the US embassy. (It was not, it was the CIA building a couple miles away)
It was a useless war, JFK/LBJ had no business getting us into it. But the US military didn't lose it. The US press and politicians lost it for us.

if not for the diem coup, there probably would have been no need for the direct intervention, there was a similar notions with the hetzer mission to Iran, that forestalled any real action against the revolutionaries,
Related: “ The advanced nanobubbler technology very effectively killed the algae that has plagued every Lincoln Reflecting Pool reopening—most infamously Obama's reopening—since 1922.
The Reflecting Pool water is crystal clear, and our National Park Service team is now vacuuming up the dead algae resting on the bottom of some parts of the Reflecting Pool—just like the destroyed Iranian Navy resting on the bottom of the Persian Gulf.’”

I am frankly amazed at what I think are just clueless general comments. Bring them to their knees, blow up everything especially kharg island and all of their oil facilities. Throw 70million middle easterners into the dark ages.
No, what Trump wants is no nuclear weapon, period. So many people think that means decimating the entire country, overthrowing the government ( with what Iraq-like control ).
Trump wants to decimate Irans military capabilities and then have the rest of the middle eastern countries take over “managing” Iran.
The last “treaty of Versailles” was a cluster **** of epic proportions. Germany never forgave it and immediately began work to get payback.
History certainly does attempt
To repeat itself.
Now i do understand the concern that as soon as we get a communist democrat into the White House they will promote Iran hegemony, line the last one because of the joooooosss.
But Trump can’t stop that. If the US is willing to put a communist in power then so be it, bring on the civil war.
Not that long ago PDJT told the Europeans that uncontrolled immigration is killing their countries.
Secty of War Hegseth repeated that theme in Normandy earlier this month.
Yesterday the European Parliament voted to start mass deportations.

I'm not going to guess what Trump's strategy is. I note he has the permission of the left to go to war again.
As far as Iran claiming to be a superpower - this is Bagdad Bob stuff. The problem with Iran, that I see, is that we know that the people and what one might call the Persian sections of the civil government are with us. It's hard to support bombing civilian infrastructure when you know the civilians oppose the regime and died by the tens of thousands fighting it.
And we know the IRGC is lying, hateful. murderous, treacherous. And has the guns. The Iran it controls isn't a superpower, it's a country hijacked by thugs posing as Shia believers and behaving like bandits.

$1.01 a gallon? I haven't seen gas that low for many years. Where do you live?
Hoover fell into the same trap as Jimmy Carter. He wasn't a good "people person," and he lacked flexibility and adaptability. He was a much better engineer than Jimmy Carter (who claimed to have been a nuclear engineer) though. Trump was a builder, like Hoover, but more on the promotion side than the technical side.
RSM is right. Nukes are sooo 20th Century. The new arms race is compute power. This is why our enemies are actively funding the environmental opposition to data centers exaggerating the power draw and water usage in order to prevent the United States from dominating the world.
Oh bullshit, Don. They are monsters as were the last guys.
In-person polling a dozen years ago showed massive support for the regime. No surprise. People were scared of giving an honest opinion to anyone. Now polls show massive opposition to the regime. The problem is that taking the poll requires a degree of tech savvy that many don't have. Maybe getting a VPN isn't that hard, but it's unclear how respondents became known to the pollsters (and vice versa). Certainly, the responders were more political than the average Iranian.
The idea that Iranians are ready to rise up and establish a liberal democracy is something we've heard over and over in reference to other countries, and to Iran itself. The last time Iran revolted it wasn't the liberal democrats or even the socialist revolutionaries who prevailed but the mullahs.
We use Eurogallons, some people call them liters.
In 79 many pumps here could not handle more than 99.9 cents. They tried half pricing it for a while. Pay double what the pump showed. The math was too much for some so they went to liters.
And the 7/10s is mandated by law. One of our brighter pols introduced it saying it would save consumers 2/10s of a cent on every gallon. But no law preventing the gas station from charging 76.7 instead of 75.7.
He may have been one of our brighter ones but he was still dumber than dirt.

Oil prices decline and therefore gasoline prices follow suit. The R’s maintain control of congress on November 3, 2026. Trump resumes bombing the next day for alleged violations. That would be my plan.
"The new arms race is compute power."
Weaponrywise yes. But not in the Clausewitzian sense. Total warfare is, was, and always will be a struggle combining economic, psychological, political, and most importantly cultural and perceptual factors...people forgot those.
Compute is just a "how". Battles are won in meat-space, wars are won in abstraction.
"Oh bullshit, Don. They are monsters as were the last guys."
Maybe, but how do you know this stuff better than the people who talk to them?
Dr Strangelove said it: "The technology required to build such a thing is easily within the means of even the smallest nuclear power; it requires only the will to do so."
....
"Mr. President, it is not only possible, it is essential. That is the whole idea of this machine, you know. Deterrence is the art of producing in the mind of the enemy the fear to attack. And so, because of the automated and irrevocable decision-making process which rules out human meddling, the doomsday machine is terrifying. It's simple to understand. And completely credible, and convincing."
It seems to me that the calculus was just as Trump implies. We could kill a lot more of the monsters, but the damage required to kill enough of them was not worth it to the world. Constraining them, and possibly getting them to appreciate how well they can do with more peaceful goals makes more sense, even if it's not as emotionally satisfying. There is always, and now more than ever, the chance of internal regime change without destroying that very large nation of millions at great expense and loss of life, including our own. As mush as I want regime change, I think this is the right and moral path for now.
MSN and others report:
China declines Iran's alliance push, backs peace deal
Alliance bid rejected: China stopped short of endorsing Tehran's proposal for a formal alliance, stressing instead its support for Iran's sovereignty and regional diplomacy.
Peace deal welcomed: Beijing praised the Iran-US memorandum of understanding to halt fighting and urged all parties, including Israel, to support the peace process.
Economic stakes high: China’s Gulf energy dependence and concerns over Strait of Hormuz navigation underpin its cautious approach to deeper military commitments.

Hoover was a Quaker and pretty devout pacifist. While you are right about Trump not wanting to cause death he will if he thinks it necessary so it is hard to think of him as a pacifist.
Hoover, his wife and 1-2 of his smal children were in China during the Boxer Rebellion. He helped organize the defense of the European compound.
In his memoirs he tells how he had to leave the compound for some reason. He was on horseback and carried a rifle. He said he carried it to scare the bad guys out of attacking him but he was worried about being tempted to use it if attacked.

I HIGHLY recommend Hoover's own memoirs in 3 volumes. He is one hell of a writer. I had read them 15 years ago in a samizdat electronic version. The Hoover Library has made them available for free download at https://hoover.archives.gov/research/ebooks I am currently rereading them but keep getting sidetracked.
His book on mine evaluation and management is a pretty good read and still used in mining schools today. Had I known about it, I would have had it on my reading list when I was teaching. It is about mining but a lot of the book would apply to manufacturing in general.
Vernon Kellogg was a professor at Stanford that Hoover knew, ISTR from his student days. He was Hoover's sort of chief of staff in the food relief effort from 1914-1920. He wrote an excellent biography too. It was written in 1920 so incomplete but excellent as far as it goes.

D Driver, Achilles claimed impending starvation riots in China about 6 weeks back. Perhaps he gets all his China info from the same nutso YouTuber whose Pizzagate video he linked the other day - I listened to while driving and it was surprising that someone who considers themselves intelligent spends their time paying attention to such drivel.
It was eye opening at how much he likes his information spoon fed.

Achilles: you are a fucking liar like Trump.
Has China started buying oil from Iran in US dollars or have they announced a plan to do so?
What else you got, dipshit, cause that dog ain't huntin'? Just repeating the same lunkheaded lies overa nd over doesn't make it so.
LOL!
You are so stupid. I love how you trust free Grok to think for you.
China wasn't just buying Oil with dollars.
They had to buy Oil with Dollars from the United States. They had to send their tankers to the gulf.

It isn't my fault you are too stupid to read.
China surrendered because If we wanted to we could cause food riots in China in 6 weeks and there is nothing they can do about it.
China didn't want that. They immediately started working with Trump and they told Iran to go F themselves.
Trump is the only person keeping Xi in power.
If you weren't such a retard you would know that China has purged most of their top military ranks over the last 6-12 months. They are in the middle of a real estate collapse. There were tanks in the streets multiple times several months ago.
But I don't expect much from people that listen to Grok and Western media. .
Two remarkably fact free posts from Achilles, with nothing but insults to back up his claims .... as always.
Damn there are 4 or 5 retards now saying the same stupid thing.
Its almost as if they are looking for backup. Or sock puppets.
Maybe we can get ChatGPTs take on this.

How much Oil has China bought with Military equipment in the last 4 months? How many missile launchers and anti-aircraft batteries have they sold Iran?
They can't get it from Venezuela. They can't get it from Iran with their cheap military junk.
What do you think they bought oil with? Hope and dreams? Yuan?
LOL!
Grok isn't doing my "thinking," it's doing my "fact checking."
But did China have to buy oil from the United States instead?
Once again: ya fulla shit. boy.
This is the smallest $6 billion ever …Some people say my$6 billion release is way less than Obama’s $1.7 billion ~ DJT
It’s the only way to ‘open’ the shipping lanes. Trump, and his art of the deal, got well and truly played.
Once by Israel.
Once by Iran, to shut the Strait.
Again by Iran to open up the strait for fees to shipping.
All this for a sea lane that was a freely navigable waterway only 5 short months ago.
They will end up with another version JCPOA, but at the cost of Billions of dollars more. And you know which stable genius to thank for that!

FYI, before Hoover became a polititian; he was a mining engineer,
and the youngest self made (non inherited) Millionaire IN THE WORLD.
Also, his Wife was a degreed mining engineer as well (it's how they met)
Oh, AND he was a fly fisher.
His book "Fishing for Fun: And to Wash Your Soul" it pretty good
Achilles doubles down on insistence, not multiple links backing uo his claims.
Must be more embarrassing a source than even that Pizzagate video guy
Pizzagate Jack Posobiec is often linked by the usual Althouse suspects as well 🦄
OBL didn't require a nuke to destroy the WTC. And the pissed off supporters of the mullahs won't be using one when they go after WTC2.
It ain't over till it's over.
The point being, you both seemed to have missed, Is that China is now paying market price for crude. It doesn't matter what they pay it with. It will all be reduced to dollars or gold.
