I love it. Watch the Commies squeal. The depiction of Mayor Largemouth Bass is perfect.

It properly respects the source material in every way.

Framing the DNC machine in the final stage of the House of Bourbon is spot on.

Shouting Thomas said...

I went with “Brilliant use…”, with the proviso (unlisted) of whether or not it’s politically effective. Pratt is GOP, so whether or not it’s effective in LA is probably irrelevant.

But, I’ve often thought of the Democratic Party as the Batman villains. The Dems are always on the side of criminals and gangs. Seems to turn them on.

Lem Vibe Bandit said...

In Georgia political ads they are called “failed career politicians”.

Rustygrommet said...

I was watching Adam Carolla's interview of Spenser Pratt. Pratt is living in an Air Stream on his burned out lot in Pacific Palisades. He has some good ideas for LA. And LA needs them.
There is exactly one house being rebuilt on the beach in Malibu.
When you elect leftists you get LA.

Spencer Pratt has evolved.

Weren't you all lamenting, just the other day, how it is the left that is fomenting violence and encouraging assassination attempts. And then Althouse spreads this garbage (as an academic exercise of course, she even set up a silly poll).

Of course, you love it.

Bass with Joker makeup looks a lot like I think Tim Walz would look like with Joker makeup.

It fits for LA, as the Hollywood theme is routine.

For good or bad, the satire is indistinguishable from true life -- see real content circa the 2020 BLM "take a knee" in African garb and SF poop/shoplifting through the 2022 Sam Brinton and Mary Poppins Ministry of Disinformation era. KBJ still keeps hope alive with her surreal 8-1 losses.

Aggie said...

What has been interesting is the way the Democrats have tried to villify Pratt. Saying that he 'lives with his parents', which is true, but as I understand it, because of the fires. Moving in the trailer was a good idea, but again, it's downplayed as a publicity stunt, treating the stunt as more noteworthy than the reason for it: abysmal response from the government, dragging out permits and trying to wear out residents to keep them from rebuilding, so that the acreage can be rezoned for apartments. And so on.

They really don't feel particularly compelled to be responsive to the frustrations that are being felt as a consequence of LA's and California's policy choices. We'll see.

I was talking to a couple of native born Californians yesterday, now in their 70s. They're doing the math, they've looked at a couple of Del Webb communities in neighboring states, they dread moving but they are seriously thinking about it and investing their time in doing the homework. If California has an exodus collapse, it will have a profound effect on the US.

Great ad. Pratt has had a number of great ads now. But it won't help. LA is about to go full Mamdani and elect a socialist, Nithya Raman.

LA does not have much margin for error as their civil society is degrading by the week. Raman will have the effect of pushing it over the edge. Good luck to all Angelenos.

No, Freder, we love it because it's not really an ad but a documentary of what your team is doing to LA, California, and our nation.

Enigma said...

@Freder --

The left has been in a breathless TDS rage since election night 2016. They laid out their goals by early 2017 per Madonna's "blow up the White House" and the fake severed head and the NYC Shakespeare play with a simulated assassination of Trump.

Real TDS actions have been nonstop ever since, to include 3 attempts against Trump, Charlie Kirk, structured lawfare, kangaroo courts, and much, much more.

Generating a film-themed satire in the land of filmmaking hardly compares. The left loved Harvey Weinstein before Trump. The left gave Polanski a standing ovation in 2003. The left fully accepted Trump as one of their own before 2016.

This era is about violent, tyranical, corrupt lefties enforcing Party discipline against NYC centrist Trump during a war of retrenchment, not the right wing.

My answer — as perhaps you can tell — was "Excellent but devolves into physical violence that distracted me from the message."

It's worse than what James Comey was indicted for. More like the severed head of Trump held up by Kathy Griffin.

I went cold when the "revolution" began with striking the oligarchs with objects, specifically objects that resemble blood. I especially objected to showing Kamala Harris hit in the eye. That's too close to things that could happen in real life.

Aggie said...

I voted against the acting out of violence, which I think is a poor choice for a political ad, given the emotions that tend to run hot, especially in these polarized times. I think Pratt looks stupid masquerading as a super hero - his A.I. character doesn't pull it off, and his real-life persona doesn't appear to align with Bruce Wayne's maverick nature, either; it's just a recognizable thematic element. Bass as The Joker is much more convincing, as is Gavin.

People won't be voting for a dark superhero. They'll be voting for leadership, and leadership is mostly ideas translating into action. This is just pandering to frustration. Why not put some rapier wit on the line? Why not point out how quickly you'll lift Angelenos out of their despair? I always think it's much better to show how you're a better thinker, if you want to persuade people to vote for you.

mikee said...

There used to be an old Pace Picante Sauce ad where cowboys sitting around the campfire run out, and the cook gives them a bottle of something that is not Pace brand, made in, GASP! NEW YORK CITY! The tagline of the ad was one cowboy quietly saying, "Get a rope."

Well, the issue of governance is more important than picante sauce. I'd suggest the ad does not go far enough in its treatment of scum politicians and perhaps tar, feathers, and a fence rail should be involved.

narciso said...

Labrea probably has enough tar

"I think libel law needs to make it easier to sue people for AI portrayals. Even if it's parody or criticism, if they want to use your likeness, it should actually be you."

A disclaimer saying it's AI would do the trick without chilling expression. And what about political cartoons, or that 80's political ad featuring an actor who looked like Tip O'Neill?

Dogma and Pony Show said...

"It's worse than what James Comey was indicted for. More like the severed head of Trump held up by Kathy Griffin."

Except here nobody is portraying or calling for anyone's murder. They're throwing tomatoes, not hand grenades.

mindnumbrobot said...

I don't like the tomato throwing, especially by kids. It's not necessary to drive the message home, IMHO. That aside, until a high-ranking Democrat survives three a**a**ination attempts, the Leftists complaining about this commercial can go piss up a rope.

Sydney said...

In the middle of the ad, when the Pratt character holds a baseball bat or club or something, I thought , "Oh, no, this is going to get violent and go off in a bad way," but then when they were just basically having a food fight with tomatoes, I was relieved and thought it was a good ad. Throwing rotten tomatoes is a long standing tradition of protest in the theater, is it not?

Peachy said...

It's a cartoon. Little kids throwing tomatoes is violent?

A squishy tomato is not even going to cause injury. Perhaps a good eye wash will do.

The REDDIT leftist demcoratic MURDERED Charlie Kirk with a real "hey fascist catch" bullet.

bagoh20 said...

I think it would be better to end it at about 1/3 through before the super hero and resolve. The beginning makes you want to pick up the tomato (vote). The end makes you think someone else will do it for you.

Peachy said...

I liked the image of the "normals" who are fed up with democrat corruption and ineptitude - throwing fruit.

Known Unknown said...

"I don't like the tomato throwing, especially by kids. "

One of the most contentious issues currently is that children have to walk through homeless encampments in parts of Los Angeles to get to school.

Whomever said this is a bit "too online" is correct. Pratt most likely won't win. He doesn't have the numbers nor the graft to make that happen in a place like LA.

bagoh20 said...

In CA, and especially L.A. where I lived for 40 years, the truth is the most damning, and the best political weapon, but it still has to go up against lies, and California voters are easy marks. That's the very reason I left. I could see that they were going to be fooled over and over, and they have been.

bagoh20 said...

CA voters with the highest gas prices in the nation actually voted to raise gas taxes. How are you going to fix that?

Peachy said...

In blue cities - the corrupt democratics are using the homeless and the durgged-out for votes. No chain of custody makes it easy for their cultists to say "You have no proof"

bagoh20 said...

90% of Californians want change, but only 40% will vote for it.

Aggie said...

I'll put it a different way: I condemn incitements to violence that play off frustrations and that can spur people into action. It's pandering and manipulation. We are seeing the fruits of that now, every week at least. Suggestible minds acting out - and glorification of same.

Actual hostility on the part of truly beleaguered citizens against the politicians who have been preaching political violence - I would find hard to condemn.

Iman said...

Please pass the ketchup! Best use of tomatoes in a long, long time.

Peachy said...

Most states are redder than we think. The corrupt left have been successful with their voting cheat machine.

Iman said...

“CA voters with the highest gas prices in the nation actually voted to raise gas taxes. How are you going to fix that?”

I have a good friend who lived in Carlsbad, Ca. and who sold his home and moved to Helena, MT after that vote.

He said when a state’s voters support a tax that was so not in the voters’ best interest, you can’t fix that and it’s time to move on to greener, more intelligent pastures.

bagoh20 said...

It was in 2018. I moved out right after that vote too, although I decided earlier.
The vote rejected a bill to repeal previous gas taxes, and require future ones to be voted on. They voted against their own power to decide, and now they pay the most and are getting unwanted new taxes added. To be in CA and vote to trust the politicians more is about as dysfunctional as a citizen can be.

They grow tons and tons of tomatoes in California. At harvest they ship lower grade sauce/ketchup tomatoes from the fields to the processing facilities in giant plastic or fiberglass tubs. The tubs are as large as the bed of a truck and needed to contain the leaking juice.

Bass and Newsom might 'take a bath' in tomatoes akin to kids playing in a McDonald's ball pit. It'd match the clown face makeup in this ad.
