Many years ago, I was in a Circle K when I noticed the woman in front of me with one of those hard, alcohol-worn faces and the ugliest open wounds on both of her upper arms. I had to ask what happened.
She told me she had spent the night in one of the fleabag hotels in my area. Sometime in the middle of the night, she woke up in terrible pain and thought she was having a heart attack. She dialed 911 and was taken to the hospital.
It turned out she had been bitten on both arms by brown recluse spiders. Their bites can necrotize the surrounding tissue. Doctors had to cut away the dead tissue leaving her with gaping holes in both arms.
But she survived.

Saw a brown recluse for the first time when I visited Kansas circa 1990ish. My girlfriend explained the distinguishing feature of them is "they walk like Mae West." That probably wouldn't help younger generations visualize the spider but it worked great for me at the time.

Had about 3 hours worth of driving today, so NPR was up. The news cycle was glorious, story after story on the unfolding re-districting disaster. All of the themes with a strong doom vibe, some of them biased to the point of seeming parody.
In Virginia, the courts - The Courts ! - have subverted the word of the voters - The Voters ! - who overwhelmingly voted in the measure. But Republicans - Republicans ! - have exploited a 'technicality', a mere trivia step, really, to persuade the judges to rule in their favor. It was hysterical, hearing them tie themselves in knots trying to leverage outrage and umbrage-for-the-wronged out of this. Judges and Republicans thwarting the will of the voters, Oh My, Muh Democrasah !

Shortly after moving to arkansas I awoke with a 2 inch diameter bullseye welt on my leg. Went to the nearest urgent care, and the doc says that's just a brown recluse bite...I've seen hundreds of them. He applied some antiseptic and said it would clear up in about 10 days. Which it did.

People here don't appreciate the skills that go into writing such a report. It's very difficult to express contempt and derision in a way that's not actionable. The writer has succeeded admirably and, undoubtedly, has a future in journalism.
The rioting was in support of an armed rapist who was shot while resisting arrest for trying to kidnap children, but a black rapist/kidnapper, so that’s civil rights
About four years ago my wife was hospitalized for a few days because of a spider bite. I'm not a worry-wort but I was concerned.
