Some articles say this means the sky is falling: the South is now a foreign country that Lil Kim feels free to nuke. Other articles say it is actually a step toward rapprochement, since it's recognition that the ROK government actually exists.

I've seen reports that up to 7 may have come down with hantavirus infections. Which would indicate person to person spread. Which would be bad. But most reports say 2 or 3... I used to think N. Korea was nothing but crazies giving birth to crazies and making huge statues, but I then saw a documentary on the Korean ethnic population in China just north of N. Korea. There are so many Koreans that China gets wiggy about internal breakaways. Elsewhere, China converted as many non-Han ethnic groups to political "Han" members as they could, but some cultures are too distinct for assimilation.

So, N. Korea should be known as "Middle Korea stuck between a rock and a hard place." IMO they have to keep the hostile stance toward S. Korea as a border buffer for China, or China will swoop in and convert them into a Tibet-like "autonomous region." Also see China's actions in the South China Sea and toward Taiwan.; 5/7/26, 6:50 PM

Normally hantavirus is spread through exposure to rodent urine and rodent feces, but this variety, “Andean hantavirus,” can spread through person to person contact. It is possible that the index case and his deceased widow contracted the disease at a “superspreader event” in South America. It is certain he was already ill when he boarded the ship.

The ship is currently on its way to Spain, but some passengers managed to disembark st Cape Verde and travel home. I don’t know how many of them were Americans — the most consistently reported number is 30 — but it appears that all of them have been traced and are actively being monitored or have been cleared by health authorities to return home.

The index case and his deceased widow were 70 and 69, respectively. Usually hantaviruses preferentially kill the young and physically fit via a cytokine storm. So, again, apparently an anomalous hantavirus.; 5/7/26, 8:35 PM

A River in Darkness: One Man’s Escape from North Korea by Masaji Ishikawa is an autobiographical account of a man who escaped from North Korea. 170 pages so relatively short.
From the epilogue:
“I remain haunted by very simple things. When I’m eating something considered a basic food in Japan—far simpler than anything most Japanese people eat, plain rice, let’s say—I look at it and wonder how many meals it would provide in North Korea. And not just how many meals, but how many days of meals. The trouble is, such thoughts make it impossible for me to eat because my heart swells with grief. So when I feel that way, do you know what I do? I go to the ocean and toss the rest to the seagulls. I want to give this food to my family in North Korea. But I can’t. So I entrust it to the seagulls. And in my heart, they carry it off to my family. And I weep.”

Haven't seen any fawns here yet, but the deer are definitely moving - lost of yearlings and does out browsing along the roads here, does getting fat and ready to drop. And walking through the woods, it's plain that the does are picking out their foaling spots in the thick brush, picking the dense stands, bedding down, getting ready. Leaked report shows basic training pass rate fell after military recruitment changes

"Mental health, cultural issues cited after success rate dropped from 85% in 2024 to 77% last year

Defence officials announced last week that the military had achieved the highest level of recruiting in three decades, and that the overall size of the Armed Forces had begun to grow modestly for the first time in several years.

They highlighted how the military beat its recruitment target, helped mostly by the enrolment of 1,400 permanent residents.

Kieley’s report, however, noted a series of problems including the number of new troops suffering from mental health conditions, notably anxiety, as well as cultural issues.

Changes that allowed for the admission of permanent residents into the Forces also meant a higher number of training units with newly arrived immigrants.

"These initial platoons were also made up of candidates with as little as three months residency in Canada, leading to a significant culture shock as candidates had not yet acclimatized to Canadian society, let alone Canadian military culture," Kiely wrote.

Those units had a higher failure rate, with one French-speaking unit graduating only 48 per cent of the class.

Permanent residents have "been a challenging demographic to train," said the report.

The unit cited with the high failure rate was also beset with allegations of racism and infighting, such as recruits from Cameroon "against those from Côte d’Ivoire."

That story reads like a Motte and Bailey. “We are going to fund more policing” but the laws of what is a crime, what bail can be set, and who adjudicates all of it remains unchanged.

That’s my concern for the UK. You can change the government, but the problems there are more structured. For example, policing. The UK has the College of Policing that sets standards across the country. Those standards are rotten.; 5/8/26, 7:31 AM

Unfortunately, I have also talked to some coworkers, and some don't even understand the disdain for Starmer. I don't know a UK coworker who will admit voting for Brexit; although I can't imagine none of them did just based on how popular it was.
