I think at the root is a flawed mechanism of evaluating how one is doing - how they are doing as a person. if the mechanism of evaluation is comparison to others, that results in an endless struggle to have more people be beneath them and fewer people “above them”. evaluating how you’re doing by comparing with others leads to an endless dividing the room based upon who you considered to be beneath you and who you considered to be above you. It starts to become your only method of gaining self-esteem - to have enough people be beneath you. Their self-esteem and their sense of superiority is driven by the fact that they hate “those guys over there”. the great irony is, who those guys are in actual reality - who they are as people - doesn’t matter at all.
