"Pitched as an 'ethical' attraction focused on education and conservation, Sloth World was heralded as an opportunity for visitors to dial down the tempo in America’s theme park capital...."

"The planned destination in Orlando, Florida, would have given more than 40 sloths an indoor rainforest habitat in which to take life 'at their own slow and steady pace,' supported by 'science-informed care,' its owners promised.... It boasted that the furry residents 'come from a variety of situations across South America and beyond' and could live to be 55 years old there, compared with the average eight to twelve years in the wild.... But sloths are highly complex animals. Wrenched from their natural habitat, they rarely thrive in captivity; their chilled appearance and lack of a 'fight or flight' mechanism belies internalised stress."

I'm reading "The collapse of ‘Sloth World’: 32 dead and a criminal investigation/The exotic animal importers behind an ‘ethical’ day out in Orlando, Florida, are accused of failing to keep their star attractions alive" (London Times).

Was there an NGO involved in this?

It’s kind of a blue city simulator. CC, JSM

The good news about Sloth World is, it's a small exhibit. The bad news is that once you make it through the line, it takes you 4 days to see it.

You could say they were slothful.

Well, I hate zoos anyway but this particularly appalls me. Sloths are lovely animals - and not just because they smile, which is why most people like them. When we lived up in the cloud forest in Panama we had one that lived in a tree in our back yard. It would come and go, as they are wont to do. But we became sort of attached.

They really don't get too alarmed by what other animals would consider danger (unless there's a Harpy Eagle around and even then they are pretty phlegmatic - like, what are they gonna do?...). We would see them splattered on the Pan American Highway, occasionally. The cars go 70mph and sloths go about 2mph to cross the highway, yeah, likely to see the girlfriend on the other side. I've twice, with assistance (they're heavy), lifted one off the shoulder and hauled it to the other side. They won't hurt you unless you get in range of that large claw which, in panic, will clamp down on you like a vise grip. Ask me how I know.

If you ever get to Costa Rica, on the Carib side, go to the Santuario de Perezosos de Costa Rica ) Sloth Sanctuary of Costa Rica), near Limon. Wonderful place (though it was 20yrs ago that I was there and I suspect that like so many other cool places it has become Disneylanded). Still worth a stop, I'm sure.

Perhaps they will do better with a lust or gluttony attraction.

Back when emotional support animals of all sorts were being brought on planes, I thought an emotional support sloth would be a great way to screw with everyone. Make everyone wait for it to move down the aisle and get in the seat, force the TSA to deal with it, etc. CC, JSM

That would be hilarious,

Google AI suggests native habitat density of 0.5 sloth/acre for large species, 2.3 s/ac for pygmy sloths. There are two buildings at the Orlando facility measuring a total of abt 0.75 acre (per Google Maps) for all purposes - "indoor rainforest habitat" and human use. Plenty enough for maybe one small sloth or a quarter of a large sloth.

Vegas has that covered. Among other things.

You only have to say something is "ethically sourced" for it to be "ethically sourced."

For me, everyday is Sloth World.

No offense to sloths, but they don't really do much do they? Don't they just chill out, and sit there? So, I dont really see the tourist attraction

And I didn't realize they're a churning volcano of emotion and stress inside that placid exterior.

Come for the Disney, stay for the sloth - funeral.

The next Jurassic Park sequel could have them resurrect the Giant Sloth. It would be sort of a Scandi throwback movie: one very, very, very slow chase scene full of existential monologues. CC, JSM
