And look at him, grotesquely smiling, as he makes the excuse that we don't understand "sarcasm" anymore — you know, the form of humor that consists of saying the opposite of what you think:The word traitor gets thrown around too much.

"Twitter has become kind of a cesspool, I probably should give up on sarcasm on Twitter," Murphy says, as if the debased speech of others — who?! — undermines our capacity to understand sarcasm. Why? If anything, this "cesspool" quality ought to make us more likely to think somebody's just talking shit.JUST IN: Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy doesn't say he has any regrets after furious backlash to his X post calling reports of Iranian ships slipping past the U.S. naval blockade "awesome."
— Fox News (@FoxNews) April 21, 2026
"I guess I just have to be more careful about sarcasm on Twitter," Murphy exclusively told… pic.twitter.com/MB6nuZjY9V
But Murphy wants to elevate his cynically spit out "awesome" into something subtle. He's doing sarcasm and the shitheads of the cesspool can't figure it out. They can't see that when a Senator says something, it really counts as the opposite of what he said through the magic of the time-honored device known as sarcasm.
Does Chris Murphy need to apologize? Of course, not. He's essentially already said he's sorry — sorry "Twitter" made the people so shitty they don't understand sarcasm anymore.

Sarcasm is very difficult to do in writing. I'm constantly seeing people who just don't pull it off correctly.
Also, the story about the ships evading the blockade has turned out to be false.
There’re a lot of straws on Sen Murphy’s back. People are fed up with his anti-American chatter, in general. It’s not just this one X post.
What’s the big deal? We have Althouse commenters openly cheering for Iran. Some are obviously paid DNC trolls.
Yeah if you are really decrying what you see as Trumps incompetence for its ill effects on American influence, and you want to do it sarcastically, you need more words. Like “Well isn’t that just fucking great.” Or “Don’t you just love it when the plan comes together. Oh wait, it didn’t.” CC, JSM
We had senators kennedy and durbin cheering the 20th hijacker who would have burns capitol hill to a crisp
Vaez is malleys coffee fetcher
The story about the ships getting through is almost certainly fake.
With that out of the way, can any supporter of Murphy explain me how, "Awesome," was sarcastic in this context? I am a world class purveyor of sarcasm and I am at a complete loss on that was sarcasm.
This is not an isolated thing. Our Congress is filled with people who have no connection to America. They enrich themselves, and use us as slaves to fund all of the corruption.
Both sides of the aisle are exactly the same now.
Nothing will happen to him, other than some comments. he won't lose money or power.
He is just the most recent reminder that those who rule over us, have no desire to work for America.
But yeah, get out and vote. LOL
Murphy couldn't explain it and he is the one who issued it.
It's not the sarcasm that makes him a traitor. It is the recycling of IRGC propaganda that he tries to give a gloss of truth to by "commenting" on. Who believes he thinks it's awesome? The same low info people who think that 26 ships actually did evade our blockade. You'll see 'em around here.
Sarcasm, sure. Murphy is only reflecting the views of his constituents, the majority of whom are no doubt cheering for Iran.
Whenever a politician blames the public for not understanding them, you got a egotistical loser. How is anyone supposed to know "Awesome" was sarcasm?
The man's a Goddamn Senator and he cant tweet out something better than low-effort teenage girl snark. All that's missing is the eyeroll. Pathetic.
Normally Id side with the people being called "Traitors" by warmongering clowns. People not supporting this unprovoked, unjust attack on a nation 5000 miles away in order to help Israel, arent traitors. They're the ones who are patriotic and care about America. And dont want to waste our blood on treasure on a "War" thats none of business.
Of course, Murphy is just a dumb killer-clown. No doubt cheering on the death and destruction and counting his AIPAC $$$.
The turd got played. Rookie mistake from an entrenched veteran…
Just plain “awesome” is always sarcastic. If you mean it literally you have to put “Awesome!”
It is said that the most cohesive society generally has the edge in warfare. In America, there are a lot of people who don't believe in this war and speak out against it. In Iran, there are also a lot of people who aren't in favor of developing a nuclear bomb. They do not, however, speak out against it. But it's worth noting that when a CIA spy approached nuclear scientists at international conferences and other places, he says that he was able to recruit some 75% of those he approached.......Our society looks more disjointed but that's because out differences are all on the surface. The differences in Iranian society are more occult, but they're deeper than bone marrow and far more destructive.
I've seen Murphy many times on MS NOW. He has deep TDS. He wants Iran to win because that makes Trump look bad and hurts Trump politically.
There are many Dems who have the same position.
Ted kennedy volunteered simillar favors for andropov and chernenko then theres kerrys contribution in three different conflicts perhaps four
Its rabbit season
The new phrase seems to be “sorry, not sorry.”
What a poor choice for him to try out using sarcasm online for, as far as I can tell, is either the first time or one of the rare times. All of the others posts I looked at seem quite serious.
I think my comment here is a bit sarcastic, but I think his, if he was not serious, was sardonic.
You find some rare exceptions when they do root for us, lieberman then fetterman now
Once Murphy get called on it, he plays the Pompous loser. "Oh, twitter is such a cesspool". Well, why are you still on it, Senator?
When Trump uses humor, one is an idiot for not realizing it.
If a Democrat uses humor, one must visit the fainting couch as the outrage is just too much for delicate snowflakes.
If he thinks X is a worthless forum, he should maybe think about making it better by not reflexively tweeting out crap when he has nothing intelligent to say.
I lived in Connecticut for a few years and it's a one-party run by idiots, so naturally they send the worst democrats available to congress. Chris Murphy, Rosa DeLauro, Dick Blumenthal, and the rest of the clown show. Murphy, however has gone from being a clown to being a disloyal assclown
I was willing to believe it was sarcasm until in the same breath he tells you why you should not believe that.
After the "awesome" he could have put /sarc.

So they would rather we, the citizens of the United States who they are supposed to represent, get bombed by Iranian nuclear warheads because they wanted Trump to look bad instead of keeping us safe from the "Death to America" people. Got it.
The subtlety that all of you mouth-breathers stinking up X are missing is that "awesome" had a lowercase A when, grammatically, it should have been uppercase.
That signals that he said it dryly, without pleasure. Leave it to an AmeriKKKan to miss the obvious.
The people of Connecticut put him there, and will probably continue to do so. It says something about the success of his party in making Dems the "obvious" choice, as the lawn signs so often say.
So luxurious to enjoy all the benefits of living inside the prosperous hegemon, and getting additional psychic income from the constant moral and intellectual condescension.
"If you find yourself cheering for the other side, you've lost your way." Not at all. It is their way. That's the hard part for normies to understand. How could they? They've lost their way! No.
They hate Trump and they hate us more than they want to see actual adversaries defeated. It is their way.
It's a Kinsley gaffe, inadvertently revealing truth (in this case about his real views on Iran vs US).
I read it as sarcasm, but it really isn't that much better that way. My reading has him saying sarcastically, "Great job, guys. One hell of a job," but that is hardly the thing to be saying sarcastically to our fighting men and women in harms way. Either way you read it, not a great look.
"Treason" gets thrown around too much, given how narrowly the constitution defines it. "Traitor," on the other hand, doesn't get thrown around enough.
Agree with rrsafety. It is not like Trump is out there personally manning the blockade. If the ships got passed (and like Yancey, I think that's fake news), then it is the US Navy that missed them. The only political aspect would be insufficient forces to do the job. However, the US Navy has boarded 2 ships now. I think they are getting the job done. But if they aren't, then Murphy's response ultimately reflects on them.
Perhaps he should have typed "oops" or added an eye roll emoji if he wanted to convey sarcasm. But maybe I'm just not smart enough to keep up with his stellar wit.
Trump is afraid to antagonize Xi too much, so I assume these are China-bound tankers.
Isn't Murphy that azz-clown that left his wife for a younger hard-lefty? And ever since his stances and rhetoric has gotten more extreme.
One wonders which of the following are dictating his current stances: 1) He lives in a bubble where this kind of rhetoric must, just must, be the path to propel a nobody Senator to the front of the Presidential hopefuls, or 2) Thinking with the little head.
Regardless of how he meant it, we all know he's hoping in his tiny black heart that it goes bad for the U.S.. If there was a way to prove it, Polymarket would have his treason wish at 95% chance of true.
I could not hate any President enough to push me to that, but I also would never celebrate or wish for a Presidential assassination, as many Democrats do for the same reason.
"or 2) Thinking with the little head."
Pussy is a hell of a drug.
In college, I had shoulder length hair. I let a girlfriend cut it off short and preppy. Friends held an intervention and got me treatment that involved substituting the dangerous addictive drug with a very similar but less toxic formulation that got me off the first drug, but I ended up repeating the treatment with alternatives for a number of years.

Actually, moron, it was a lie put out by the Iranian gov't.
Takes world class stupidity to trust anything they say, but Chris, and you, are willing to rise to that challenge.
It takes even greater world class stupidity to try to claim that Trump, who's hit China with tariffs, and grabbed Maduro while there was a Chinese delegation there to assure his safety, is "afraid to antagonize Xi too much".
Got anything else really stupid you want to write?
Anyone who still votes Democrat, after all that has come out about the corruption, anti-semitism, Islamism, racism, misuse of the FBI/CIA/DOJ, and anti-Americanism is either an asshole or really stupid.
Murphy is a treasonous, liver-lipped, Commie corksoaker.
He is in pole position to take over if Schumer loses.
"So they would rather we, the citizens of the United States who they are supposed to represent, get bombed by Iranian nuclear warheads because they wanted Trump to look bad instead of keeping us safe from the "Death to America" people. Got it."
No, they just think if we retreat that the Iranians will leave us alone.
They bombed a synagogue in Argentina.
I don't think they will leave us alone.
People like Murphy, Miss Lindsey, etc. get elected because people are partisan morons. Its impossible to figure out what 'muricans think - because they don't think at all.
I doubt his voters in Conneticut, especially the Catholics, could tell you why they vote for Murphy except that (1) he's got a (D) after his name and (2) they hate those Goddamn Republicans. Maybe its because they all want to get abortions - even the men.
Well hes been stupid since 2015
The best all-time explanation like this was when Rep. Henry Waxman was “misquoted” on a climate change issue. He famously said “You misunderstood what I meant to say.”
Nosferatu waxman
"Treason" gets thrown around too much"
But we're talking about Hitler and the Nazis invading Iran with a white supremacist military operation under orders from the Zionists.
Eventually, the fifth column in this nation will need to be dealt with.
Sarcasm regarding the performance of our Naval Forces in actual combat with Iran is beyond the pale. It's more than bad taste. As Whoopie Goldpie might say, not treason treason, but maybe a little treasony. Sedition-ish.
My expert American reading of Chris Murphy is that him calling this comment 'sarcasm' was meant sarcastically.
There's always the \sarc tag Chris.

Recent maritime tracking data from firms like Vortexa, Kpler, and Lloyd’s List Intelligence confirms that Iranian-linked tankers (including the so-called “shadow fleet” or “dark fleet” vessels) have been bypassing the U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports in the Strait of Hormuz/Persian Gulf area.
Well he is right about Twitter.
He should move over to X...
I don't think it's Crystal clear what is happening with the Shadow fleet ships. The Pentagon comments are so vague and opaque that they can be interpreted any way you want.
What we do know is Trump flinched today in face of the irgc shutdown of the talks and calling his bluff.
Whenever I hear 'shadow fleet,' I think of Babylon 5. CC, JSM
He's a liar.

Sarcasm,(to cut flesh), as humor is very difficult to do. Most people that try it aren't very good at it. Plus it limits your audience. But then. You'd need a sense of humor. Alas.
I doubt his voters in Conneticut, especially the Catholics, could tell you why they vote for Murphy except that (1) he's got a (D) after his name and (2) they hate those Goddamn Republicans.
Bingo.
I lived in CT for 40 years.
It was not sarcasm.
If* you believe the "Shadow Fleet" claim is true, that means that Iran somehow managed to sneak about 15% of the oil it formerly shipped out of the country.
Awesome! (sarc).
I wonder if Iran is getting tired of winning.
Trump and the Navy has redefined 100%.
*Big "if."
TACO TUESDAY 🌮
STATEMENT OF PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP:
Based on the fact that the Government of Iran is seriously fractured, not unexpectedly so and, upon the request of Field Marshal Asim Munir, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, of Pakistan, we have been asked to hold our Attack on the Country of Iran until such time as their leaders and representatives can come up with a unified proposal. I have therefore directed our Military to continue the Blockade and, in all other respects, remain ready and able, and will therefore extend the Ceasefire until such time as their proposal is submitted, and discussions are concluded, one way or the other. President DONALD J. TRUMP
Makes me wonder if Trump is planning an attack using TACO as a cover.
He crossed his fingers while braying deceptively.
Irony is the shackles of youth.
It was snide, which is maybe covered by the sarcasm umbrella, maybe not.
We aren't at war with Iran. Trump attacked Iran with his Friend Bibi. There's been no declaration of war. Therefore, Iran is not the "enemy" and there can be no treason.
There was a traitor who committed treason, his name was Jason Pollard. Trump commuted his sentence. Miriam Addleson flew him back to Israel in her private Jet. And Mike Huckabee just had lunch with Pollard because they like each other.
Pollard stole secrets and caused more damage to USA security during the Cold war then any spy in history per Intelligence experts. When he got back to Israel he called on American Jews to work for Israel's interest because per Pollard "Israel is your real country".
Now that's real treason. Making snarky remarks about Oil Tankers isn't.

Perhaps you might want to stop lying about this. We've been in a state of war since 1979 when Iran attacked sovereign US territory and took hostages. No peace treaty has ever been signed.
A state of war can legally exist without a declaration of war.
Russia and Ukraine have yet to declare war on each other. Are they at war?
Being anti-war as a political position really only works when there are bodybags coming home (more than a few dozen anyway)
Sarcasm is the use of irony, mockery, or bitter remarks to convey contempt, ridicule, or irritation, often by stating the opposite of what is actually meant. It is a form of verbal aggression designed to cut, wound, or insult, rather than simply to amuse.
"Sarcasm" doesn't necessarily mean saying the opposite of what you mean. Maybe "irony" doesn't either. Sarcasm lies in the scornful, mocking, insulting, or ridiculing tone. Murphy was being sarcastic about Trump and the war. That doesn't mean that he meant the opposite of what he said.
It bears repeating: Chris Murphy is a liver-lipped, Marxist-lite corksoaker who has chosen to provide aid and comfort to our enemy.
"It bears repeating: Chris Murphy is a liver-lipped, Marxist-lite corksoaker who has chosen to provide aid and comfort to our enemy."
So- a Democrat, then?
The isolationist movement before WWII is remembered as a handful of Nazi lovers, but there are two important realities forgotten: first, isolationism was a broad social mandate that crossed Party lines and included mainstream religions, FDR New Dealers, Farmers' Associations (massively important then), commies and Marxists until they switched sides, and even some Jewish groups, as the extent of Nazi plans were only vaguely perceived or mucked up by FDR himself at the time. The human toll of WWI, disgust with being pulled into another European war, and the much-maligned Charles Lindbergh's evaluation that the Royal Navy could lead but nobody could conquer German Air power contributed to reluctance. Second, the moment we entered the war, isolationism dissolved, and the young men involved, and especially leaders most prominently at the top, enrolled and fought bravely.
Now imagine that happening today.

You know that Act Blue was knowingly funneling foreign money to the democrat party? Everyone knows it now. But traitors in the DOJ refused to prosecute it.
So now Trump hired AG from outside of DC.
No the problem is you are all traitors, not that Murphy is bad at humor.

Trump really is a nice person. He doesn't like ordering people killed.
This really should be clear by now.
He understands that nobody in Iran is in charge. He knows that most people in Iran are being held hostage by a few radical dead enders.
Iran doesn't have anything left and it really doesn't hurt the US to just sit there. We are making money hand over fist. It is China that gets the shaft and I suspect there are several other side jobs getting done.
It sure looks like he is outing a bunch of traitors while this carries on, or more that they are outing themselves. All of the bought and paid for globalist traitors like Murphy can't help themselves.
This post, the story, the X post by the Dem, the Iranian propaganda upon which it is based, are all meaningless noise, meant to fill media space and distract from the reality of Iran's complete military defeat. Again, I suggest an immediate resumption of US military strikes against Iranian targets both purely military (IRGC, I'm looking at youse guys) and dual use, from every ship in every Iranian port and the port facilities themselves, to the bridges and electricity grids so often mentioned, down to every location known to ever have housed an Iranian government or military or morality police official. And keep it up about a week or so past the time the survivors beg for mercy and unconditional surrender, just to make sure.
Not sarcasm. The fuck-head demofuck wants Trump and the US to lose.
Regardless of his characterization as sarcasm, his “awesome” remains aid and comfort to the enemy. That’s straight-up treason.

Yes, you'd have to be pathetically gullible to believe it, or care.
Since the blockade isn't in the gulf, it's outside of it.
Meaning "leaving the gulf" is irrelevant, even if true.
Are you a moron, an ignoramus, or just a liar?
Chris Murphy, you're no Dinsdale Piranha
"The isolationist movement before WWII is remembered as a handful of Nazi lovers, but there are two important realities forgotten:"
70 percent of Americans were against our getting into WW II as late as October 1941. In September 1939 it was more like 85 percent.
The reason the country pulled together after Pearl Harbor is because the so-called Isolationists were all patriotic Americans. They didn't think the war was in our interest. Once the Japanese attacked us - it became our war. Lindbergh despite being overage and refused military service, went to the Pacific theater and flew combat missions. He shot down a Japanese Zero. Most of the others from "America First" served their country - if they were young enough.
OTOH, many of the "Lets go Kill Nazis types" made sure they got safe jobs at home. William Shirer, for example, didn't join Murrow in London, he stayed in the USA "fighting American Nazis". woody Guthrie with his "This guitar kills fascists" did everything he could to stay out of the service, and dodged the draft as much as he could.
woody Guthrie with his "This guitar kills fascists" did everything he could to stay out of the service, and dodged the draft as much as he could.
Oh that's rich. I did not know that.
If we ever got in a hot war with China, which of all the nations on the planet most closely shares the ideology of the actual Fascists, I would expect our own Antifa scum to do much the same. Those who weren't explicitly on China's side, anyway.
Guthrie tried to get a deferment and when denied joined the merchant marine at the last moment before he would've been arrested. He went on one voyage - then when back in the USA, constantly changed his address so his draft board couldn't locate him. Eventually, in May 1945 they lowered the maximum draft age to 30, so Guthrie was safe.
He wanted to kill fascists - as long as it involved no personal risk. that was for other people.
"He wanted to kill fascists - as long as it involved no personal risk. that was for other people."
Mmmm...I doubt Guthrie wanted or meant to literally kill fascists or expected anyone to think this was his meaning. His "this guitar kills fascists" was obvious metaphor, saying in other words that spreading "the truth," (by his perspective)-- that spreading and informing the public of the facts--would "kill" fascists by pointing out the falsehoods spread by fascists.
Of course, human beings don't work that way. Many humans will hold on to false "truths" to the death. Guthrie certainly knew that.
