I wouldn't conclude that security was lax. It's a hotel, and this was a single evening's event, probably one of many. They're not going into lock-down for the entire building. They locked down the ballroom, and its security was intact and untested. This clown only made it about 20 ft past the first perimeter and never made it to the next one, and was taken down alive and uninjured. That's pretty good security. The only criticisms I've seen are all from non-professionals, who don't understand how these systems work. The professionals are all standing proud and can say why.

The first assassination attempt was very crude but it came within an earlobe of succeeding. The second attempt seemed the most sophisticated, and the Secret Service detail deserves credit for spotting the rifle. This third attempt seemed not so much crude as stupid......Chance plays a huge role in this. It must be disquieting for the President to know that there are so many reasonably bright young men actively plotting to kill him........I see no evidence that Divine Providence has any role in human affairs. I do believe, however, that there is such a thing as luck. I don't think even the most fervid of Trump's detractors would deny that Trump is one lucky guy. I hope his luck continues to hold and that some of it rubs off on us.

I don't think Trump is trying to meet the hard left press halfway or at all. I think he's focusing on building ties to center and right-wing press per Fox, changes at CBS, Larry Ellison, Elon Musk, etc. He's also aware of lefty press layoffs at WaPo and elsewhere.
