China. Taiwan. The ulterior motive here.

And how will Iran do that? They have no air force and their missile and drone capability is severely degraded. Empty talk by some dead-enders.

All those decades of chanting “Death to America” has come back to bite Iran.

Trump waited until the markets were closed yesterday before executing this action. They open Sunday afternoon at 6 EDT (for Asia). We will see....

BTW, Iran is freely shipping oil through Hormuz, oil destined for China; Kharg Island, Iran's oil export hub, is inside of the Hormuz chokepoint. Iran is obviously the only exporter able to do this right now. The US is allowing with a nudge and a wink.

Even Trump wants to fight wars with one hand tied behind our back. Oblititerate (to use a favorite word) Kharg and all ships leaving or headed to Iran — as if it’s a real war.

The collateral benefit is what this does to the Chi-Coms.

Trump plans a trip to China in a few weeks. If I’m Trump, I would not go. Meet in some neutral country, if there’s one left.

I sympathize. But the logic of the punitive expedition is that it's not an extermination. You don't break your kid's spine when you spank him. Trump has to calibrate the force so that it's memorable but not crippling. Whether the next Iranian government is IRGC:TNG or Reza Jr, it needs enough infrastructure to have a fair go at running the country. CC, JSM

Dittohead repeating the talking points he has been given, despite the facts on the ground.

Obliterating their infrastructure feels good but what’s the hurry actually. The longer Iran does this the more the gulf states come together with Trump. Taking another week or two before pulling that trigger makes sense to me.

First of all, people crying that the war is 'never ending' need to grab hold of their goods and take a deep breath. It won't be over for weeks, or possibly months.
It is a long process made up of many phases and many more uncertainties. So far, we are doing amazing things. Iran is a powerful and large nation- both in population and area. This is not Grenada.

But, the taking of Kharg Island could be yet another huge and unexpected move by US forces. From what we've read, there is a Marine Expeditionary Force on its way to the region. Possibly to take over Kharg Island? That would not only be a huge blow to Iran, but also to China.

Leland said...

Begley said April 1st. That means about the same time ahead of us that has already been spent. And while that’s only been two weeks, the regressive left acts like it is an eternity. The Atlantic is writing “the longer the Iran war drags on”. The invasion of Panama in 1989 and Desert Storm (excluding Desert Shield) in 1991 were both 5+ weeks.

I know Jane Fonda is still alive or so I’ve been told. Waiting for her announcing she is flying to Iran to sit on a missile battery. It would make a good photo op, except for the burka.

It's amazing to me that so many commenters across the world can look at a campaign that has been run with such effectiveness as this one - obliterating the military readiness of the enemy to the point of targeting individual morality police on the street with little collateral damage, owning the skies, etc - while suffering the loss of only a handful of planes and less than a dozen dead, and then, in the next breath, declaring that the war is being fought without a clear plan or set of goals.

I guess they're expecting a powerpoint presentation in a briefing room that lays it all out for them, so they can find fault at their leisure, instead of having to guess.

I would say, so far, the past 2 weeks has been pretty effective. If these chattering heads disagree, how come they don't provide examples of when it's been done better, and 'wow' us with their comparative analysis? Staying in the realm of speculative doom, that's much safer for lazy people, I guess.

If Trump were following his own longstanding position to take the oil, he would capture the island to have control of the infrastructure. But since his newly announced policy is to drive gasoline prices higher to make profits for U.S. oil companies, he’ll destroy the infrastructure.

“Let us kill you or else we take all of your money,” does not seem like the most effective threat for Trump to make.

Susie Wiles worked for Netanyahu and Scott Bissent worked for George Soros, and I got played into voting for Trump, a Manchurian candidate, by his lies about being the peace president.

He’s actually a moron who keeps stamping his feet because Iran has the very leverage over us that we were supposed to be creating over Russia with sanctions.

rehajm said...

…he never announced that, that’s just your ignorance in trying to get in a dig at him. Unlike most Americans he’s had some economics education and would never make that mistake. S/D curves demonstrate optimal pricing has upper limits as price levels trigger less consumption through conservation, substitution, consolidation. No matter, his public statements and threats are aimed at the old Iranian regime, not you. I suspect he’s not really interested in destroying their refinery capacity and would rather preserve it for the new regime. See: Venezuela…

imTay said...

I have posted video of Brzezinski urging the jihadis at the Khyber Pass in 1979 to “take their country,” when he told Jimmy Carter that he was doing it to force the Soviets to invade, and then in a 1999 interview, he shrugged off the death and destruction as inconsequential, notice that when he said that, 9-11 hadn’t happened yet.

No matter who you vote for, you get John McCain.

He did not destroy what he plans to steal, using US Marines probably, “for humanitarian reasons.”

Note to the lefties, this is what it feels like to have an actual case to make, but remember that your elected representatives all stood and applauded for this war, which might have sealed the deal in Trump’s mind that he would have wide support.

" Kharg Island, Iran's oil export hub, is inside of the Hormuz chokepoint."

It's actually about 450 miles from the chokepoint, up near the northern end of the gulf, but it's where all the oil is loaded on ships. It's the gas station of the Persian Gulf, and it's changing ownership. A hostile take over if you will.

imTay said...

What else has stopped coming out of the Persian Gulf, and won’t be starting any time soon, even if the war ended today, is 1/3 of global artificial fertilizer production, and meanwhile the seasons continue their march. I hope you are planting a garden because food shortages are coming, with high prices.

Thank you Donald Trump!

China and the rest of the world have far more to lose if the Straight remains closed than we do. Trump is not a fool and he will take the off ramp one way or another before very long. This is a messy and risky move, but I suspect it will end soon and the results will be positive. We could pull out tomorrow and the end result would be a vast improvement over the previous status quo. Doing nothing also had consequences.

Of course. The new government's success will depend on income from oil, and Trump and the Republicans want the oil flowing and fuel prices down before the midterms. Blowing up all the oil infrastructure would do more harm to the people of Iraq than to the oppressive regime we are removing.

Wars are won by killing the beast. It's what they would do to you and they will not stop trying.

As long as the Islamists control the neighborhoods, it doesn't matter how many military targets we destroy.

Boots on the ground WILL be needed; at least enough to lead. And, for God's sake, stop all radio communication in the country and shut down all TV broadcasting.

I will be surprised if the Kurds resist this opportunity forever. We have likely promised them something for current restraint. I wonder what.

Iran IS ground zero in an on-going world war. It will not be over by the end of the month. Don't forget - Ukraine didn't fall in a month, either.

Given AI and AI-assisted military weapons with long-range missile capacity, we've truly entered a new politically uncertain and dangerous era. It's not granddad's WWII militarily speaking. We as a nation are facing difficult times, with difficult choices. This Iranian "War" dates back to 1979; the US Embassy hostages in Tehran, the multiple terrorist attacks funded by Shiite Iran, the oppression of most Iranian citizens by their quasi-religious military junta disguised as a religious theocracy. Many Iranians have fled Iran since 1979, unable and unwilling to return to Iran.
May be US is obligated to become "Big Guy with Big Stick". NATO certainly isn't up to task of modulating the rogue Communist and Jihadist countries. Americans certainly don't want the political dynamic of England and Germany, with police-state enforced pandering to Jihadist men, to Sharia Law advocacy, and to tacit acceptance of sexual assault of female citizens by immigrant (Islamist) men.
