So said a TikTokker I love — Touré — and because I am John Wilson's biggest fan (I think), I watched the Netflix documentary "Louis Theroux: Inside the Manosphere":
British American filmmaker Louis Theroux has spent much of his long career interviewing people it’s easy to hate: from members of the Westboro Baptist church, to bigoted residents of whites-only communities in South Africa, to openly racist settlers in the West Bank. He has never really “exposed” anyone as an immoral wretch or a political extremist—because he’s chosen subjects who have never pretended to be anything they aren’t. But his relaxed, disarming style did put these various fundamentalists at ease, allowing them to subtly reveal intimate details about themselves: their precise motivations, their internal moral reasoning, their emotional lives, the lies they tell themselves—whatever. The reasonable liberal viewer will be left still hating Theroux’s subjects, but he will also understand them more.
Not so with his latest documentary, Louis Theroux: Inside the Manosphere, which premiered on Netflix on Wednesday. In it, Theroux cavorts with a cacophony of misogynistic internet influencers to practically no effect. Theroux’s subjects are people who spend multiple hours a day in a profitable panopticon of their own making, livestreaming every thought, opinion, and personal detail for public consumption. If nothing is concealed, nothing can be revealed....
So the subjects of Theroux's documentary make him the subject of their documentary. They're as self-aware and in control of the edit as he is, but they are on live stream with live commenters and they have people who clip out highlights very quickly and post them on TikTok. So to their audience they are making Theroux look like an idiot even as he's trying to amass enough footage to cut into an hour of finished product that might make them look like idiots on Netflix. It's a 2-way process, a man-on-man confrontation. We can see that on Netflix. I wish the edit had concentrated more on how these scrappy men reacted to the Netflix bullies and tried to get the upper hand. That's an interesting story about how social media works these days.
When it comes to manosphere influencers, there’s... no contradiction they’re unaware of or embarrassed to confront, because... the name of the game is attention, clicks, and views—something most of them freely admitted long before Louis Theroux showed up to play the heel for some of the most egregious grifters slouching through the world today....
So did Theroux "play the heel" or act like "a total dork"? Heels and dorks are very different!

Writing this post, I stumbled upon this: "'The History of Concrete' Review: John Wilson Ponders Permanence and Immortality in Hilarious and Poignant Feature-Length ‘How To’ Follow-Up/The creator of HBO's 'How To with John Wilson' learns about a building material, Italian wax sculptures, New York City housing initiatives and more in this Sundance-bowing doc" (Hollywood Reporter).
For some readers, describing The History of Concrete as a 101-minute episode of How To with John Wilson will be cause for celebration; for others, it will be absolutely meaningless....
Count me among the celebrators.
John Wilson is the Werner Herzog of the mundane, the lo-fi poet laureate of New York City. He’s half puckish prankster, half earnest documentarian, all inquisitive wanderer. Once you tap into his vibe, carefully written and edited to seem stream-of-consciousness, the viewing experience is like the most laconic roller coaster imaginable....
You know, I hate roller coasters. I know it's a metaphor and it's Wilson, not a roller coaster, that the writer meant to call "laconic," but if a roller coaster could be laconic and still be a roller coaster, I would give it a try.

Looks like a bunch of muscle heads who have mastered new media and the greater fool theory.
Meanwhile the folks we liberated 30 some years ago say kill the boer, does louis find any irony in that
Theroux's range of villains appears to run the gamut from A to B.
I know I can (and may have to) look up any connection he might have to the American writers of the name, but I'll ask here first.
The trailer looked a lot like most Intertoobz offerings: not very smart people talking about not very interesting topics.
If nothing is concealed, nothing can be revealed....
…yah, that’s the gist of it I suppose. The other thing about his schtick besides is lame church lady attempt at moral superiority- because he’s exploiting the subjects for his own gain he’s never better than what they are. He’s an asymptotic asshole…

…this will come as a shock to any believers of that but getting people to look is a profoundly valuable and profitable skill. Not just recently, either…
Standard dishonest editing tricks.
The supercillious Brit accent. "Do you consider yourself a misogynist?" Good God.
I wish one of the muscle heads had said " I dont know what the fuck that means" And then have "the dork" explain it.
Why would anyone watch this twit?
Do you ever wonder why you don't think the right way? And live the way liberals who control the media want you to live? Whats wrong with you?
These would be accurate honest questions from wanky brit guy.
Well, anyway, I'm glad I found out about John Wilson.
Wilson sounds much more interesting than some stupid "search and destroy" documentary against "racism" or "misogyny". Theroux and people who love documentaries attacking racism are morons.
But y'know, I've always been too hard on narrow minded conformists. Society needs people who dont really think but just accept and make the trains run on time. Put 'em in a Nazi Germany that'd won WW II and they'd be watching Netflix documentaries about "Communists" or "race mixers" and reveling in how alternative world theroux was confronting them.
This is classic Theroux in many ways: he holds up uncomfortable truths to the light, examining them from every angle with that signature faux-naïve curiosity. Yet toward the end, when he meets Sullivan’s mother, even he appears momentarily exposed. She asks him pointedly why he criticizes her son for attention-seeking while devoting so much attention to him himself. It’s the perennial dilemma of the documentarian, but here it lands with particular force—and the film never fully resolves it.
Can’t wait for Theroux to do a similar show with female influencers.
He's one of the Theroux clan of writers and actors. I had no idea.
Grifters vs. Grifters. They are all attention whores for $.
Part of stewarts stable of clowns
Concrete is fascinating. We're still learning about Roman concrete technology. It's one of those singular inventions that changed the world. (You're welcome, for your daily thought on the Roman empire)
"So Said a TikTokker I love -Touré"? This explains so much re: our Hostess! "Most of Touré's followers seem to think white culture is racism, colonialism, and stealing from black culture."
Was werner herzog always crazy, i only got a taste in reacher as the zek
Theroux clearly plays a faux role of being vaguely indifferent -- leaving the subjects to fill in the (very deep/wide) gaps.
I always wonder why the subjects sign up for the show. I decided that they are so blind to their own obsession/prejudice/ignorance/fantasy/etc. that they simply don't see the trap, and/or they believe they can out-Louis Louis through guile and intelligence. They never have.
Anyone with a modicum of emotional intelligence (however 'weird' they may be) would see it immediately and run a mile. Hence the successful shows tend be ones with these type of generally deluded and often shabby people. It's self-selecting in the end.
Ah yes toure, a relic from the past at least chappelle is self aware
His dracula movie was genuinely disturbingly nearly as much as Robert Eggers
How hopelessly boring.
Concrete is interesting these folks are dull as dishwater
The son of kevin whites is so edgy
Accountant
That's a small part of the "manosphere" and the least interesting part. Despite the disdain, I think he envies them.
Son of Paul. I've enjoyed Paul's travels and many adorn my bokshelves. He's a keen observor sometimes shockingly blind-sided, I think, by naivete'.
He often travels in the same way I do and I understand and approve of that. HOWEVER - I think he'd be the worst travel companion, ever. Two or three days, tops!

Does this intrepid person who I have never heard of ever interview anyone whose "fundamentalism" might disturb the smug pieties of the typical BBC viewer? An iman, perhaps? The members of the California Coastal Commission? Antifa activists?
I don't know about Touré :)) but the subjects of his documentary are total and utter losers. "They want a guy who can lead them and dominate them." What about the women who enter into relationships with these losers? They are also fucked up, explore what leads a woman to be with any of these fuck-ups. I believe they are an equal match in terms of loser-ship.
Hes a hack piling on men with more conviction than him
Hypo? In some ways yes, but I think they're looking for "hyper."
Rich, motivated, in great shape, with endless beautiful women at your disposal. The poor things don't know what they're missing.
Reminds me of The Sartorialist.
The reasonable liberal viewer will be left still hating
I think we can all agree that's redundant - you think either "reasonable" and "liberal" are synonyms, or "liberal" and "still hating"
if a roller coaster could be laconic and still be a roller coaster, I would give it a try
Is there another kind? I've never heard of a verbose roller coaster
“Manosphere” is a term and concept promoted by progressive misandrists. If you are in doubt, check Wikipedia’s entry. BTW, very few men of my older generation are misogynists although we are finding an increasing number of women who are mean and/or stupid. Sadly, many older women now qualify having been poisoned by the leftmedia.
This Theroux guy seems very selective in his distain.
John Wilson on concrete, now, there's something I can get into.
Alright. I made it ten seconds into Toure's Tiktok. I can't imagine a more irritating person.

These guys remind me of a recent incident I had at the gym. The members check in either with a finger scanner and phone number or by scanning a QR code from their phone. Someone had printed up some temporary paper signs to identify: "finger scanner" or "bar code."
It's not a big deal but I pointed out that what the phone app uses is a QR code not a bar code. The manager, a cocky 30ish guy and another guy employee a bit younger look me straight in the face and insist it is called a bar code. Their attitude toward me was it is what we say it is.
I mean, it's not that hard to know the difference. A month later and the signs are still there. Oh well.
Some guys can not be moved. It's more important for them to think/feel they are right than to be right.
“ Hes a hack piling on men with more conviction than him”
Boy George has more conviction, the Sex Pistols have more convictions.
