I was born and raised in Alabama. After spending most of my adult life elsewhere (including 27 years in Colorado), my wife and I moved back in 2012.
Alabama does have a history of racism that can't be denied. It hasn't been completely irradicated, either. On that note, there are some common features in that history.
The people who erected the Confederate statues, flew the flags, enacted the Jim Crow laws, enacted and enforced school segregation, and comprised the KKK, you know, the most virulent racists? They were all Democrats. George Wallace, Bull Conner, and Lester Maddox were all Democrats. Conner, who turned the fire hoses on civil rights marchers in Birmingham, as even a member of the DNC.

I remember when I was younger believing that if I were to fly to (for example) Budapest, and stay at a nice hotel, check some of the nicer restaurants and maybe go a museum or two that when I flew back, I would have somehow or other magically absorbed something important about Budapest. One of my friends (white) went to college in Alabama in the late 1980s, originally from Mass. This is what she saw as the difference in the way blacks were treated north vs south. This is obviously an oversimplification but it’s still interesting:
“In the 1980s South, Black and white people often knew each other’s families and interacted in everyday life, but white employers rarely promoted Black workers into higher‑status, better‑paid positions. In the North, Black people made bigger financial and professional gains, yet social life was racially separated, with far less casual mixing between Black and white families.”
Today both north and south are very different.
Many years ago when I was flying home from college, I sat next to a black guy who split his time between Louisiana and New York. He said New York had far more racism than Louisiana. Maybe she should take her kids to New York next time.

My friend worked part time in a fast food joint. The rest of the staff was black. Several had worked there for a long time. I always take the opportunity on posts like this to commend
James Loewen's "Sundown Towns" as a corrective to the traditional narrative that's so flattering to the parts of the USA that aren't Southern.
Having said that, blacks had a much harder time in the south in the 70s - 80s - the only decades I have anecdotal exoeruence eith. So many blacks moved north (NYC for instance) for jobs yet they were so nostalgic for their lives in the south. It was so sad.

The things that have propelled California to one party status have been its one party media, its one party trade unions, its one party educational system, its immigration policies that are a sub rosa alliance with the Reconquista, and its strategy of driving productive people away from the state.
