Yesterday, Peter Doocy prompted Trump with the same question Obama recently answered: "Barack Obama said that aliens are real. Have you seen any evidence of non-human visitors to Earth?"
Trump did not answer the question asked:
Trump focused on Obama's behavior: "Well, he gave classified information. He's not supposed to be doing that."
The reporter's mind cranked quickly through the implications: "So aliens are real?!!"
Trump: "Well, I don't know if they're real or not. I can tell you he gave classified information. He's not supposed to be doing that. He made a big mistake. He took it out of classified information. No, I don't have an opinion on it. I don't talk about it."
There's a lot going on there. Trump continued to try to put the focus on Obama's behavior.
But first he stated his opinion — "I don't know if they're real or not" — then denied that he had an opinion and asserted that he doesn't talk about "it."
About what? The way he doesn't have an opinion? Well, he just talked about that. So maybe the way he "doesn't know if they're real or not"? The way he knows that he doesn't know?
Confucius said: "To know what you know and what you do not know, that is true knowledge."
And Plato has Socrates saying: "Although I do not suppose that either of us knows anything really beautiful and good, I am better off than he is—for he knows nothing, and thinks that he knows. I neither know nor think I know."
But Trump has access to secret things, so his not knowing — or his choice to lie — after seeing those things, gives us something new to think about. He is revealing that there is something he knows which allows him to know — or lie about knowing — that Obama revealed classified information.
What Obama said about aliens was: "They're real, but I haven't seen them. And they're not being kept in... what is it—Area 51. There's no underground facility—unless there's this enormous conspiracy and they hid it from the president of the United States."
I've boldfaced the part that I think is the revelation. It's possible that there is an underground facility, and it was hidden from Obama, as Obama joked/"joked." But it's also possible that Obama was lying.
"Based on the tremendous interest shown, I will be directing the Secretary of War, and other relevant Departments and Agencies, to begin the process of identifying and releasing Government files related to alien and extraterrestrial life, unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP), and unidentified flying objects (UFOs), and any and all other information connected to these highly complex, but extremely interesting and important, matters. The words that jump out at me: "to begin the process of identifying and releasing."
I see delay and distraction.
And what happened to the focus on Obama's bad behavior? Are we supposed to forget about the nonexistent underground facility?
What revenge does Trump have in mind when he says that Obama "made a big mistake"? If a character in a movie said that....
ADDED: In the plane colloquy, Trump does go on to say that "a lot of people do" believe in aliens. He asks Doocy, "Do you believe it, Peter?"
And then he adds something magnanimous that undercuts the threatening sound of "He made a big mistake." He says, "The president can declassify anything that he wants to. So, I'll get him out of trouble. I may get him out of trouble by declassifying."
I'd make something out of the quick shift from "I will" to "I may," but Trump seems already to be declassifying whatever it was Obama unwittingly revealed.
Andrew Sorkin on CNBC just said that he’s worried that America can’t handle this information and as evidence he cited how the public and Press has reacted to the Epstein files.
"Did I discover an alien base under the East Wing of the White House, and is that why I demolished it? That's classified. Did I discover an even bigger one in Greenland? That's also classified. Did a McDonald's manager reveal to me that half their employees are secret aliens, and that's why their fries taste so good? I really can't tell you.
