Trump delivered a very long SOTU last night. Did you watch? Really?

It was too late for me, but I watched. Until I didn't.

It's an unnecessary formality, very stiff and awkward, but Trump made it his own. Hunched over the lectern and with his hair coming unglued, he boasted of achievements and called out individuals in the audience, who were, in his view, either fantastic or horrible. We're in a grand struggle between good and evil, don't you know? I dropped out at some point because sleep had a greater claim on me, as it did on some members of the audience. But Trump was still fully inflated, and the video remains. But there's something about watching it live that keeps you going, and once it's dead, you don't really care, do you?

The SOTU speech: everything that is most excruciating about political speechifying in its most extreme form. I haven't been able to watch more than 10 minutes of a SOTU speech in my entire life.

It should be okay to call out good and evil in accordance with our national values. Citizens need reminders. Aliens need the information.

WHY did the dems even show up?
were they That Eager to show their contempt for Americans?
Given the opprotunity to show they supported America over illegal aliens..
they instead say mute, then hoisted Large banners reading:
DEATH TO AMERICA! DEATH TO THE GREAT SATAN! LONG LIVE ISLAM!
why? why did they feel that they needed to do this?
i'm assuming it was because they Assumed that no one was watching?

I watched the SOTU before Tivo and recorded Youtube videos were possible, but the SOTU always had long-winded monologues, odd diversions, and wasted applause time. So no, I haven't watched one in years.

Read a few left and right wing "top take away" posts the following day. Watch a few clips. Save time and avoid aggravation.

The rebuttal speech is often more enlightening, as it reveals who and what the opposing party want to promote. The "liberal in moderate clothing" Spanberger received mixed reviews...I want to learn more about her now...

Spanberger ran on "affordability" and her first action was to move to raise taxes, despite inheriting a budget surplus from her Republican predecessor. As I noted at the end of last night's campaign post, my reaction to her was, "Poor Virginia! Always Winter, But Never Christmas!"

@Clyde:

As you surely know, Virginia politics pits the deep blue D.C. suburbs against the red Old South rest of state. The D.C. suburbs are a voting proxy for federal employees and contractors -- and largely opposed to Trump, agency layoffs, and budget cuts.

IMO, the Democrat's entire strategy for the fall 2026 election has focused on D.C. area voters. In getting Spanberger elected, this included the long shutdown last year (i.e., the well-off early retirees affected by the 400% poverty cut off for ACA health coverage cared about the nominal "reason" for the shutdown --> Spanberger's off-year election cycle).

On one hand Democrats want to turn inherently purple VA permanently blue (i.e., gerrymandering; NJ-style governance), and on the other hand they want to maximize D.C. lawfare opportunities using federal employees. From what I've seen of Spanberger, she's an obedient Biden-like Party puppet in suburban soccer mom garb. Still, if her SOTU reaction speech was bad her appeal won't go national.

"Trump may lay us off but we can nullify his EOs."

Temujin said...

I tried. But sleep got me. Also, I can't listen to Trump for very long anyway. I like (mostly) what he gets done. But listening to him speak is an adventure. Like...when he was 'honoring' the parents of people murdered by illegal immigrants. He tended to get very graphic on the details which I thought was both awkward and awful for the parents, not to mention the rest of us. But that is Trump. He isn't evil, and doesn't mean to come off as evil. He's just missing the gene that helps a human filter speech or thought.

Anyway, the SOTU has become a show, a tedious one at that. And not a necessary message to Congress, but a campaign stop for the party holding the White House. That's it. Today it's the GOP's turn. Tomorrow the Dems will be back at it, and we'll have Dems standing and applauding every few sentences and GOPers looking down at their phones, and (in that case) not standing for 'brave Trans women'....or whomever they decide to present instead of the US Mens Hockey Team.

Not sure it's necessary any longer other than as a vehicle for the President to stop at a point and remind the nation what he (or she?) has gotten done. Which I guess makes it important. Otherwise we only know what the large media tells us. Or smaller social media voices.

I'd probably vote for the person who says they'll end this 'tradition' of stopping the national networks for a night and instead, just have a national movie night, complete with Director's commentary and popcorn. Of course we'd have someone protesting the popcorn, so for them we'd have an option of avocado toast.

National Movie Night with Avocado Toast.
I think I'm done for the day.

No. It's nice to see what others highlight as their favorite (in a good or bad way) moments. I've seen enough now to come to a conclusion: Trump has established "America First" as the current brand for the Republican party. Democrats have established endless mndless protest as their brand.

Onto October then and we can settle this in the midterms, right after Democrats spend the summer bemoaning the fact America survived for 250 Years with an historically stable form of Constitutional Republicanism. The Left can't help themselves. They're stuck in the position of hating Trump more than they love America and it just oozes out of them in every appearance, every gesture.

Humperdink said...

I’m convinced the left’s campaign policies in the upcoming midterms will be F-this, F-that and F-everything.

Nope. I think Trump does this to troll, and the length is to laugh at those that try to compare him to Sleepy Joe. You (the critics) couldn’t keep up with Trump if you tried and he just demonstrated it as true.

Look at the biggest critic here, Mark. His best comment is a valueless comment about Presidential Medal of Freedom, as if we are to forget Biden gave them to Simone Biles, Megan Rapinoe, and Katie Ledecky. In other words, the criticism is at best a complaint that Trump continues the tradition of his predecessors. It is hardly bloggable.

Totally agree with the professor. Future SOTU addresses should be from the Whitehouse w/o the studio audience bullshit like it was an episode of Let's Made a Deal! This whole thing started to go wrong around the days of the Reagan administration and it has never been recalibrated back to what it's supposed to be. What it isn't supposed to be is a performative political pep rally with shout-outs and special guest stars and all this other nonsense. If you want dignity in public presentations, you gotta be dignified and Trump is just not the guy for that , especially if you give him a live crowd to cheer, boo, & hiss. I guess I'm in the minority opinion here on whether the SOTU has outlived its purpose. Quite the contrary to the majority view here, I believe it has great value. Throughout the rest of the year, we get random bits of information, events, narratives, and almost all from second-hand sources. But here, on one night, in a couple of hours we get to see, hear, and experience first-hand from the behaviors of the principals leading us exactly how they truly feel about us and the principles they actually value.

The most important thing citizens should be paying attention to in regard to presidents is the actual empirical results of what they're doing. However, there is some civic value in having a president periodically show up at the Capitol to spell out his vision and justify or explain what he's trying to accomplish.

I think the reason this SOTU didn't seem worth watching for a lot of people is that Trump already does the latter thing all the time. In fact, for most modern presidents, there isn't a ton of mystery around what they're trying to do, so the SOTU becomes about something else, e.g., Biden's ability to make it through an entire speech, or what the opposing party will try to do to rattle the president.

I watch every SOTU. This was the best, as it incorporated fun moments. They are tedious as they cover such a broad range of topics in such a partisan manner. Usually they are filled with fantasy legislation that will solve grave problems like healthcare and climate change. Trump broadly declared the success of his policies and promised more EOs. Legislation is no longer a viable means of government, so he at least had a coherent case to make. The constitutional requirement is from the days of part-time legislatures and so the form is empty and each president's team seems some measure of political advantage. All things considered, Trump did well.

If Trump is truly “America First,” we wouldn’t have launched a huge fleet to fight Israel’s battles

Not only is this OT but is truly stupid on a global scale. You may be ignorant, but America's armed forces are very aware of Iran's nearly 50-year war against us. They committed an act of war when they took over our embassy in 1979 and held Americans hostage. They continued the war through several admins that let them, with impunity, kill our soldiers in Iraq. Almost every IED that took lives and legs was made and planted by Iran and we all knew. Bush-Obama-Biden all knew and all failed to retaliate or, worse, aided the regime (pallets of cash).

Ignoring a country that broadcasts their hatred of you and the fact they are at war is not good governance, and Iran is explicit. "Death to America! Death to the Great Satan!" are not simply slogans they are policy of the regime. They've proved their intent. If they get The Bomb they will use it against us and Israel and I don't want to wait and see who gets hit first.

In your pea brain assessment Israel is hit first and so we ought to just say nevermind. That's stupid on steroids.

This is an easy call, even if you are ignorant of the way Iran is currently supplying Putin with 1000s of drones. Even if you are ignorant of the fact embargoing Iran's shadow fleet aids our operations against the Russian and Venezuelan shadow fleets. If you can't understand the geopolitical sense of isolating Russia and China by cutting off their patrons/suppliers/allies then you certainly can't be trusted to make the right call about our ally Israel. We are the biggest beneficiaries of stopping the mullahs. That it also might make the whole region safer is something to celebrate.

If Trump claimed to be America First in his speech, showing that it was a lie is certainly on topic, even if you don’t want to hear it.

The purpose of the SOTU is to report on the state of the union. This year's address hit it out of the park by that measure.

The union is divided and the opposition party puts loyalty to their brand over loyalty to the country and the people. That fact was graphically demonstrated over and over and over.

Too long? Suck it up. I think many people making that complaint sit still for hours to watch the "Oscars". Put it in a writtten report? NO ONE will read it but most will believe whatever nuggets the media chooses to share. HA!!!!

Too many victims of Dem policies highlighted? Too graphic? People SHOULD get uncomfortable about real suffering. Victims are not a statistic and they are not some asshole "triggered" by others ignoring her personal pronoun.

Note: Award-winning, clever advertisements don't move the product - repitition, repitition, repitition moves the product.

After the Dems sat on their hands time after time when Trunp gave them every opportunity to stand-up for America, he pointed a finger at them and called them "crazy". Kinda hard to argue with that.

Who but a crazy person would willingly participate in the making of so many campaign advertisements that will make them look like traitorous fools?

I'm glad he called-out the Somalis - and Minnesota - and FRAUD. The media now has to talk about this - or not. People will notice.

He called-out the Court but I wish he'd gone further and lobbed a grenade at the district courts. Roberts is letting the judiciary rot and government of the people is suffering.

And, before any call the president out for being uncivil or disrespectful to the opposition, please compare his performance with that of Pelosi who made childish faces behind his back when he spoke and then tore-up his speech.

It was on in the other room, and after watching for a minute I was pulled in to watching the whole thing. It had some incredible moments, amazing stories, and exceptional people, and it had some powerfully telling visuals. Trump was surprisingly confrontational, even for him, but it was welcome by me, and I think a lot of other Americans who have wanted for a long time for their representatives to answer basic questions about what they support or don't. I noticed that the Democrats do not support anything Trump does. They really only stood in numbers for the release of the Gaza hostages. Not sure why that was more important than other things.

This SOTU seems to be getting mostly good reviews, but I'm sure Democrats absolutely hated it. I would if I was them. It really disproves the claim that both parties are the same.

Trump did a great job of showing what the voters' choices are. You may not like the Republicans, (I don't), but the Democrats have decided to try their best to see just how much that matters to you.

The visual of the night was the democratic senator who was caught sitting with his head in his hands as Trump spoke on protecting the country/immigration/democratic inaction.

The visual spoke volumes.

If I were Trump I’d never do it from the Oval Office, I’d go to Congress simply to allow them to clown themselves on the media, which many were happy to do.

Surprisingly though, and to her credit Senator Warren stood and clapped when Trump called for a ban on Congressional insider trading. I’m no Senator Warren fan, but that was the correct take.

If Israel is fighting America’s wars, what is our beef with Iran if you take Israel out of the picture? They have already agreed to not build a bomb, to rigorous inspection, if we leave them alone, what reason do they have to attack us, because if somehow they did manage to build enough bombs to attack the US, which is probably impossible under strict inspections, attacking us would assure a devastating nuclear response.

“They are a crazy theocracy!”

I give you Huckabee, who finds a deed for Israel to practically the entire Middle East in the Old Testament.

Enigma: is Bodies an anti-abortion song? I know John Lydon is pretty conservative (as well as Vacant). Or is it just pure punk disgustingness? CC, JSM

Bodies is considered anti-abortion by many (and a right wing rock song). However, it's apparently a true "horror" story of an insane woman who lived in a tree house and carried a self-aborted fetus in a bag. Look up the backstory!

John Lydon is indeed either a libertarian or rightish-wing versus the UK's politics. I don't understand the internal nuances of being anti-monarch vs. conservative vs. reform.

I find it awkward when Trump calls out political opponents like that. Part of me thinks, hey, be diplomatic, more conciliatory, and so on. But then I also think why should he? Because the opposition has been brutal. They don't give a hoot about respect, civility, decorum. Why play nice when the opposition does not?

Its not like shutouts are unknown, in fact the 1980 Olympic Gold Medal match was a shutout for the USA.

You really are a dumbass. The Gold Medal match was a 4-2 victory over Finland, and they had to rally from a 2-1 deficit to get it.

And if you were to actually read Begley's comment, he was talking about going 25-25 in basketball.

For the record, Hellebuyck saved 41 of 42 shots.
Dumbass.

We got home from a Styx concert at 10:30…

Was it the best of times? Between the lineup changes and aging, did it still feel like Styx? I didn’t realize they were still together, let alone touring.

I don't think Althouse views that as a put-down.
