buwaya said...: Cortes is a very common name (apellido). Widespread in Spain and its colonies, and a lot of odd places too - would you believe Algeria? That is the result of 19th-early 20th century Spanish immigration to the French colony. Many of the "pieds-noirs" refugees from French North Africa were Spanish (and Jews).
If you want to investigate (especially) Spanish or French names, I recommend geneanet.com, it is connected to several national civil registries. If a name has a geographic origin, it will give it to you quite decisively, based on frequency. It works for instance for the former Philippine President Duterte, whose ancestor, I am convinced, came from north of Lille, at that time in the Spanish Netherlands.
