Last year we went with round trip flights,3 night room comps, FREE PLAY and night club tickets to Borgata in New Jersey for my birthday through MGM Casinos and Hotels.(we get there often) We just received similar perks only to https://beaurivage.mgmresorts.com/en.html?ecid=GMB_BR_HO in Louisianna on dates February 24th through February 27th similar perks, round trip flights on SUN COUNTRY shuttle from airport to Casino and same deals as Borgata as through MGM. The only drawback is the cigarette smoke that was bad in Jersey hopefully better ventilation in the BEAU! We went week ago for my wifes' birthday to the Indian Casinos of HARD ROCK and smoke was terrible. Multi zillion dollar places and they cant get better air systems amazing but we wear masks and use the areas that aren't so smoke filled, its really more about the stay, Be good to stay south rather than heading North again too cold up North we left that lifestyle years ago, not good for old bones..Smoke filled palaces Beaucoup Dinky Dau, my wife loves the games though!! The Bandits are waiting!!

As this is the cafe thread, and in light of Political Junkie's sad news, I will share that our dog - middle-aged and apparently in robust health - is the major impediment to the "slow travel" retirement my husband has been looking forward to for years. (He never wanted a dog; I love having a dog and would happily arrange my life around having her.) We are now, as I've mentioned previously, unhomed and living in Airbnbs, and he wants to be able to jet around freely to places we've never visited, but flying with the dog seems very fraught to me. The stress on her, the logistics...

So for now, our travel is limited to places we can drive to, which is causing tension between us. Our youngest has offered to take the dog, but that's contingent on his getting a job post graduation and not having to travel for said job. So for now, we are North America-centric, and constantly slightly contentious.

I haven't seen the previous posts. We lost heat at 1400 today. I've been trying to deal with that. Our gas provider hasn't been very responsive. I tried other companies, and they won't respond, because we are not prior customers. Burning wood until it runs out. It's snowing again. This is not normal for this area.

Mason G said...

I used to take trips quite often but since getting dogs, that's changed. I retired three years ago and brought my dogs with me on the one driving trip I've taken in that time. I don't know about the dogs, but I found it stressful and am not eager to recreate the experience.

Sometimes, I think about the opportunities for travel that I've missed out on (I'm not getting any younger) but on the other hand, it would hard to imagine not having the dogs here with me today. What they've given me would be enough material to write several books, so the tradeoff is worth it, I think.

Jamie… maybe you should try your hand at writing a screenplay… for a rom-com movie about a lovable, rascal dog that is causing friction between a happy wanderer husband and his dog-loving wife… potentially starring Owen Wilson and Kristen Wiig?

Hell… the damn thing almost writes itself!

I think too many people believe that the Jewish resistance to the Nazis during WWII was confined to a small number of doomed ghetto uprisings. And that the rest of the Jews just resigned themselves to being passive victims. But that's not true. There were groups of armed partisan Jews who were hiding and fighting in the forests of Western Belorussia and elsewhere. One such group was the Bielski Otriad, a partisan detachment headed up by brothers Tuvia and Zus Bielski. They saved the lives of thousands of Jews who escaped from the ghettos, and also engaged in armed guerilla attacks against the Nazis and Nazi collaborators. I just finished reading "Defiance," an excellent book by Nechama Tec, which chronicles this little known part of the War. I highly recommend it. If you don't have time to read the book, it was made into an excellent movie with the same name, starring Daniel Craig and Liev Schreiber. It is a remarkable and unforgettable story about those who chose to fight.

Jamie, same boat here. We road trip with our two dogs, but have fewer options to stay and minimal activities to do wherever we go. Last time, belatedly, we realized that the trips were always about what the dogs can do there, rather than what the two of us can do…lol. Hikes and parks are fun, but we’d both like to do other things at different spots.

We’ve been testing the live in pet sitters lately, one night at a time, til we’re comfortable. Pretty happy with a couple options so far. Hopefully one day we’ll get a week by ourselves!

We’re truly at their bark and howl. But, we love them to pieces.

I can remember not too long ago when people would talk about Dow 15,000, then 18,000, and so on like they were unobtainable pipe dreams. I have not continuously been invested that whole time, but a good part of it. I have not sold anything for at least 10 years. The growth over the last two decades has been amazing. It was 6,500 in 2009 and if you told someone then that in 17 years it would be 50,000, they would of laughed at you. That seemed impossible at the time. Of course inflation has eaten up half of that gain.

True story. A close friend had a lovely black lab named McGee. Knew that dog since its puppyhood. Had a dream one night that featured McGee coming to visit me and telling me how much he liked me.
Met my friend the next day and he told me that McKee had passed.
I had similar dreams when my mom and the lovely boxer dog I grew up with, Belle, passed. Mom and Belle were forseeable. McKee not so much.

I trace my steadfast belief in Heaven in part to those experiences. And it's nice to hope to see my Mom and my Dog with Him sometime in the not-distant-enough-future.

I don’t think it really matters.
1. We really do a lousy job studying ourselves. Mostly we just confirm our biases.
2. The important thing that needs to be done is to hire, grade, promote on merit. Gauging merit is also based to some degree on our biases and it’s necessary to keep that in mind.

Watching the Milan Olympics opening ceremony that I recorded yesterday. The big song/dance number is dedicated to Italian arts and culture. One main feature is guys in bighead costumes of Rossini, Puccini and Verdi. Reminds me of when the London Olympics took the small-head approach and dressed up tiny Sir Kenneth Branagh as Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

There was also a girl dancer running around in a gold lame costume. Not sure if she is an Italian celebrity. But anyway at one point her male backup dancers were pawing her - not miming it - actually pawing her. Including her breasts.

That. Is. Italy. CC, JSM

“A remarkably candid column appeared in the New York Times this week by Spain’s left-wing Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, who recently announced his government would grant amnesty to half a million illegal immigrants living in Spain. Framed as an argument for “why the West needs migrants,” Sánchez’s essay is really an admission of moral collapse, and a frank declaration that he intends to destroy his nation in exchange for short-term economic gain.

It is an admission of moral collapse because the Spanish government has signaled its willingness to erase their country, put the interests of foreigners above those of native citizens, and turn Spain into a magnet for Third World migration...”

"Pray For The Left"

They always said that Charlie Kirk was a nazi, then they celebrated after they killed him
They tried to tell us that black lives matter, and that white people have always been villains
They burnin' flags in the streets, and they scream at police taking illegals to prison
They got rainbows on they bedroom walls, and they swear to God that men be women

They're scrolling through their TikTok's to get the news
They heard that Trump's a fascist, they swear it's true
They set fire to Minnesota, we smell the fumes
They say that guns are dangerous, guess they're the proof

They'll shoot that red hat off your head, then make a meme of your last breath
Cause you're not like them, so they want you dead, but, we'll still pray for the left
They'll say that they're hurt by things we said, then say we deserve it when we're dead
When we're shot in neck with our last breath, we'll still pray for the left

Prayin' for the left

They keep saying that ICE are the nazis, so, they're buying guns and tracking positions
Go tell the parents of the kids who were killed, illegal immigrants are really the victims
They say America ain't safe if you're black or trans or gay, I think it's way more dangerous to be a Christian
Y'all started acting different back when Anthony Fauci made you keep the ones you love at a distance

They're scrolling through their TikTok's, antifa clips
They say that Trump is Hitler, they're mad they missed
They think they have a feel, is how it is
And conservatives are evil, we shouldn't live

They'll shoot that red hat off your head, then make a meme of your last breath
Cause you're not like them, so they want you dead, but, we'll still pray for the left
They'll say that they're hurt by things we said, then say we deserve it when we're dead
When we're shot in neck with our last breath, we'll still pray for the left

Scratching swastikas on Tesla's ain't gon change a thing
You can burn our cities down, but we'll just make them great again
Oh, they hate us cause they say that we are full of hate
They wanna kill all the police tryin' to keep them safe
They shoot that badge of yours, right off your chest
They want a civil war
Pray for the left

They'll shoot that red hat off your head, then make a meme of your last breath
Cause you're not like them, so they want you dead, but, we'll still pray for the left

Will Spain put up with it? They won't survive it unscathed, or maybe at all, that's what the track record everywhere else says. I'm not aware of any other times during our era of modern, mostly democratic governance, where our political leaders have conducted so many dangerous experiments that are openly to the disadvantage of the people they are responsible for governing.

This is the concept the right wing propagandists have been selling for years- everything is racist.

Why?

Because the more everything becomes racist, the more logical deduction is that the “everything” is not racist at all, therefore making their very own actual racism not racism, because, everything is racism.
