"Mr. Routh, a former roofer from Greensboro, N.C., never fired a shot during the thwarted assassination attempt on Sept. 15, 2024..."

"... a fact that his lawyer, Martin L. Roth, emphasized on Wednesday. A Secret Service agent spotted him outside a fence near the sixth hole while Mr. Trump was golfing nearby. The agent fired; Mr. Routh fled in his car and was caught shortly after.... Mr. Roth asked the court to consider setting aside the sentencing guidelines and instead sentence his client to 27 years in prison.... 'Defendant would be in custody into his 80s and would not pose any threat to cause harm to the public,' Mr. Roth wrote. On Wednesday, he described Mr. Routh as 'troubled,' but said he had 'a very good core.'... Mr. Routh told the judge before his sentencing on Wednesday that he was a do-gooder, saying, 'I’ve given every drop of who I am, every day, for the benefit of our nation.'"

Don't all assassins portray themselves as do-gooders?

I asked Grok. Full answer here. I'll just quote what Charles J. Guiteau, President Garfield's assassin, said after he was condemned to death: "I know where I stand on this business. I am here as God's man and don't you forget it."

Sucks to be you. Routh.

Good. This guy was deserves it.

Routh may not have fired a shot, but he showed a lot of effort in trying to take a shot. I'd say those actions were sufficient for the conviction and penalty applied. Unfortunate that NY doesn't treat cold blooded murderers the same.

I'd respect them more if they would just say: "Hey, what can I tell ya? I'm a bad man, but that was a hell of shot, wasn't it?

"Did you hear about the guy who attempted to assassinate Trump?"

"Which one?"

Not a good state of affairs when there's more than one, and the second one was just too boring to garnish appropriate attention.

Murder is one of those jobs like politician where you are rewarded for failure.

The truth is Routh is a liar and his pants are on fire.

Planned Presidenthood (PP). Not all "burdens" are successfully aborted. There are survivors, albeit rare.

History will unfold Routhlessly.

With everything else going on- did anyone else not know this trial was going on? First I heard of it was an X comment of the sentencing. Nothing on thee trial itself during the trial. Why, even Ann didn't blog about it. Or did I miss that post?

It has attracted precious little attention on my local TV 2-hour morning newsathons. Or if it is, it's Move along, not much to see here.

Truthfully I just look at it attentively when the weather's on. But I get a glimpse of and the gist of the items just before and after the weather.

I believe this claim is undermined by his arrest, trial and verdict.

I hired a roofer this past summer. Two Polish men show up to discuss the project, a father and son. Clean cut, professional and extremely knowledgeable. But guess who showed up to do the work? A dozen Guatemalan illegals who were seriously unqualified and worthless. What a crock.

In any event, for liberals, the morality of an assassination is often determined not by the act itself, but by the societal value placed on the target. Kill a villain and you're a hero, kill an innocent and you're a monster. And Trump is about as low as you can get. Trump is a corrupt king whose death would save a kingdom. I think we are seeing something similar in the Luigi Mangione case.

Biggest mistake this guy made attempting to execute his dastardly deed in Florida. Try this in Minnie and he gets probation.

Probation? They'd burn down six city blocks in his honor.

Luigi Mangione's lawyer can now argue he, too, never fired a shot at the President.

Greg The Class Traitor said...

He tried to murder the favorite to become the next President. The fact that he failed doesn't mean he should be allowed to get out of jail.

Since they can't execute him, good sentence

Paul said...

I'm fine with life sentence.... tough shit he tried to murder an official, ANY official. He is now an example of what will happen if you do these things.
And good riddance to him.

Two attempted assassins of Ford sentenced to life but released before ends of life. Same for Wallace's. Of course Reagan's acquitted for insanity and released eventually too.

Kirk could say, if he was alive, that he had given every drop…though I prefer Lincoln’s "last full measure of devotion". So much more grand. Routh is no Booth btw.

"For the benefit of our nation".

Which for him meant assassinating a presidential candidate so that no one can vote for him.

The trial was in September with conviction occurring on the 23rd after 2 weeks. The sentencing part just happened. I did check Althouse archive for that week and didn't see anything, but I remember a post somewhere (Instapundit? NewNeo?) about the daughter. Maybe Althouse posted that sometime earlier than the jury verdict.

Speaking of the assassination of Pres. Garfield, read Destiny of the Republic, By Candice Millard. The killer was clearly insane, and Garfield's doctors were responsible for the President's death.

But yerahner, my clients, the doctors, were not trained in the germ theory of disease, and bear no responsibility for an act that was considered innocuous at the time.

He was lying in wait for Trump to show up so that he could take the shot, so of course he didn't shoot.

Routh is almost 60. If he took his shot at 30 or at 40, attorney Roth would say that client Routh shouldn't be in prison until 60, because at that age it's unlikely that he'd shoot anyone.

Rough didn’t get a shot off because he was still aiming his illegally modified SKS when a Secret Service agent saw the gun barrel and opened fire before Routh could squeeze the trigger. If he’d thought to keep the gun better concealed …

It's not the people with loose morals that constitute our biggest problem. It's the righteous ones, fanatically certain that they are on the side of the angels, the John Brown types. And they have multiplied like rabbits in recent years.

I worked near Greensboro for some years, and I was certain I'd met him when his photo became public, as we had many oddball customers, at least one named Routh. Grok says the Rouths first appear in local 1759 tax records, the same year my Scottish Kerr ancestor settled there. They were originally English Quakers from Pennsylvania. Guess he dropped the pacifism.

His assassin attempt was certainly more peaceful than the peaceful protests in Minnesota.

A guy in central Illinois needed a new garage, and wanted an Amish-built garage. First contact, a Buick pulled up, non-Amish driver, out gets an older guy, typical hat, monochrome clothes, beard- here the speaker paused to glance down at my beard as if to wonder if I had been offended, while I glanced down to take in the detail that he also had a beard-no beards were offended in the moment- they shook hands on a price and date.
On building day, a Corvette arrives with an Italian-looking guy in a leather jacket, and a van of workers that he interpreted as Mexican. Garage was built quickly.
A few days later the Buick came by so the only guy with a righteous beard could pick up the check.

Democrats don't want to dissuade their crazies from taking shots.

'I’ve given every drop of who I am, every day, for the benefit of our nation.'

Every democrat believes this. That is why they danced when Kirk was shot.
