"I'm not trying to impress you. I'm just trying to impress upon you: I'm like you."

Let's look at the 2 obvious problems:

1. He's calling attention to his struggle with a serious disability, dyslexia. We talked about that here, a few weeks ago. He seems to be confessing something that is true, making himself vulnerable and relatable. Of course, he's also exposing his limitations. But his antagonists may screw up trying to take advantage of this.

2. In saying "I'm like you" to what seems to be an audience of black people, he's taking a risk. You can hear warm laughter, as, perhaps, many people relate to him, because they've struggled with exams, for whatever reason. But he seems to be unwittingly expressing the old stereotype about black people — the one right-wing people love to bring up. So, again, his antagonists will screw up trying to exploit what is, from him, only a slight innuendo. I'll bet some of you do it right here in the comments.

His way of bonding with black ppl is to tell them how stupid he is & that he can’t read.
This means my first read on him was correct. He’s been handed so many things & put in high positions he never earned or deserved.
Do you wanna know the craziest part of this footage that will haunt him forever? He’s literally slowing his speech down & talking in a sporadic cadence.
He’s not just TELLING them that they’re all probably stupid & probably can’t read, he’s LITERALLY SLOW-ING-DOWN-HIS-SPEECH to make them understand the words that are coming out of his mouth!!!! As if they’re children!!!! That means he REALLY BELIEVES they’re slow. He’s not just saying it—he didn’t misspeak!!!! He BELIEVES it!!!!
Do ya love it?!?!!
Do ya just love it, black ppl?!????

It reminds me of Jesse Jackson's criticism of Obama: "He is talking down to black people." Obama survived. Obama thrived

Respectully, that seems like a hell of a lot more than a slight innuendo. More like "I'm like you, I can't read, can't do well on standardized tests. So you should be able to relate to me."

Okay, so he has trouble reading and didn't do so hot on his SAT. The real question is whether he can get an ID to vote. If so, he's nothing like the black people in the audience. Or so the Democrats tell me.

Dyslexia is often associated with superior three-dimensional (3D) thinking, spatial reasoning, and holistic, "big picture" visualization. This cognitive profile, sometimes called "MIND strengths" (Material, Interconnected, Narrative, Dynamic reasoning), allows individuals to excel at visualizing complex objects, identifying patterns, and spatial manipulation.
Dyslexic Advantage
Dyslexic Advantage
+5
Key Aspects of Dyslexic 3D Thinking:
Enhanced Spatial Ability: Many with dyslexia possess advanced, innate abilities to mentally rotate, manipulate, and visualize 3D objects.
Visual-Spatial Dominance: Dyslexic brains often show greater activation in right-hemisphere, visual-spatial areas, leading to strong mental imagery over verbal processing.
"Big Picture" Focus: Rather than focusing on linear details (like letters in a word), dyslexic thinkers excel at seeing the overall, holistic, or "big picture" of a scenario.
Strengths in STEM/Creative Fields: These skills often translate into success in architecture, engineering, design, and complex problem-solving.
Improved Memory for Images: Dyslexics may have a stronger memory for images, pictures, and, in some cases, enhanced peripheral vision.

While not universal for every dyslexic person, these cognitive differences frequently offer significant advantages in spatial, mechanical, and creative endeavors.

If what he says is true (and wow is it ever amazing how Democrat politicians are diagnosed with disabilities nobody noticed for years and years at exactly the right time to be beneficial for them) then he's obviously a beneficiary of 'white privilege' and should exit the race in favor of somebody like Wes Moore or even better, a two-fer like AOC. And he's creating that semblance for manipulative political reasons. We shouldn't just feel, but should think. We've never heard him talk about his supposed disability until it became advantageous to his career to do so. We've never heard him express concern for children with learning disabilities (or, indeed, any concerns whatsoever for children in the declining California schools). He's trying to sell you something, and this is just advertising. Don't make the mistake of treating it as any more relatable than the cartoon bears who use toilet paper.

And for that matter, we've never heard him tell a white audience that surely they can relate to intellectual struggle and underachievement. He's the one who decided that Black people in particular would find that relatable, and it's perfectly legitimate to point out the implications of that decision. If a right-wing politician had done this, the reaction would be savage. Newsom shouldn't get a pass just because he's good-looking.

Joe Biden made multiple bizarre comments about Black people, including a striking one about Barack Obama (he's clean and articulate).

Just yesterday, NY Gov. Kathy Hochul declared that many Black children haven't even heard of the word 'computer'. What?

Well...my, my. Democrats view of Black people is that of helpless people with childlike minds who need government to take care of them.

And no one in this country fights harder against School Choice than Democrats like Gavin Newsom and Kathy Hochul. Their priority is to keep those political donations coming in from the teachers unions. They care nothing of the Black community other than their vote.

Newsom's comment was akin to him patting a Black man or woman on the head and telling them that "we understand you and we'll take care of you".

Regarding racism and political ideology: This is NOT a "right wing" thing.

Every group is prone to racism, segregation, and xenophobia. The right tends to see group membership as unchanging and favors self-isolation. The left tends to between-group tension as a challenge and routinely tilts at windmills (i.e., rules that fail and that can result in more harm as good).

Birds of a feather flock together, and only slow, gentle cross-generation intermarriage bridging seems to be sustainable. When school bussing is required, elite leftists suddenly appreciate private schools and school choice. When someone wants to build Section 8 public housing in an elite neighborhood, NIMBYs emerge from every political group.

The 2028 Democratic primaries are going to be a contest between Donor Class and Base Democrats (everyday grass roots Democrats).

The Donor Class (which is now long accustomed to running everything) is orienting towards an anti-Trump candidate and a campaign aimed at Trump's personal deficiencies based on Trump's high and growing negatives. Beat Trump and stay with the wealth--coddling status quo is the argument. The Donor Class wants to maintain the same pro-monopoly economic concentration policies, deregulatory policies, and wealth concentration policies that have characterized the neoliberal ascendancy in tandem with an Israeli--centric Middle East policy of high tempo engagement in this volatile region that have ruled for several decades.

Base Democrats want an entirely new domestic competition policy similar to pioneering efforts made at the beginning of the Wilson administration and further built out in Roosevelt's New Deal. Domestically, Base Democrats want to reverse wealth concentration and strengthen social democratic infrastructure spending accompanied with major reform.

Gavin Newsom has been a creature of the Donor Class his entire career. He has clearly established himself as pursuing the anti-Trump political attack strategy favored by his Donor Class patrons as opposed to a program of broad-based deep reform. The goal here is to position himself as the inevitable Credible Alternative with more political standing than other candidates who will join the race later. But California also has a vibrant liberal-progressive wing to its Democratic party and Newsom will try to create a blended program with broad appeal based on his experience of working with all groups (call this the Shallow Reform program).

Newsom's biggest threat will be another credible Democratic challenger running on a Deep Reform program of major structural overhaul of Democratic party domestic and foreign policy programs. Newsom will always be vulnerable to the real thing showing up. A credible challenger from the Mid-West could be formidable.

The Democratic party is more divided than at any time since 1896 when 36-year-old William Jennings Bryan delivered his fiery "Cross of Gold" speech and changed the Democratic party forever. Bryan's nickname (formally used for years by the NYT in news stories) was the Great Commoner or just the Commoner. Everyone knew to whom the reference was. So much for elite pretensions in that reform-minded Democratic party.

A good conjecture is that only a candidate committed to Deep Reform will be able to move tens of millions of Democrats necessary to politically recapture the commanding heights of political power in Washington DC. The Democrats need a real movement, deep and wide.

No R Presidential canidate has gotten more than 15 percent of the AA vote since 1968. Goldwater got 6 percent. Nixon in 1960 got 30 percent.

That 30 percent sounds impressive until you realize that LBJ was from a segregation state Texas, and been AWOL on civil rights in the 1950s, while Nixon had led the charge on Civil rights and helped pass the 1957 civil rights bill.

And from 1932-1952 the Democrats usually got 70 percent of the AA vote. Pretty amazing given the Democrats were the party of segregation. And that many AA in the south, who could vote, went Republican.

I thought, a few months ago, he was the clear frontrunner for the Dem nomination but appearances like this are making me question that belief- this was a serious error and can be easily exploited by his opponents in the primaries.

Maybe Althouse believes the way to win is to pander to the victim class because everyone believes they are victimized in some way and the victimization motivates them to vote. In that case, I really hope Newsom wins the primary. The volume of those victimized by Newsom’s policies grows geometrically daily.

I don’t see victimization based on skin color, but then I never voted Democrat.

The left love victimhood. This is Newsom's attempt at it. Seems like the last person who could claim to be a victim, but it's absolutely essential in Dem politics. Everybody loves being the victim, because it so powerful. Who among us hasn't overplayed our suffering from an illness, or hardship. It's works on Mom from the moment of birth with that first cry. Men used to learn to embrace stoicism, but many now pull out the victim card too, because the whole society has been feminized. By nature, it works much better on women.
It's also a basic left/right divide. The left bases everything on who is the greater victim. The right uses victimhood too, but not usually something innate, or things you chose, but rather from someone or a group attacking you. You are expected to overcome the cards you are played.

Victimhood is a major obstacle for the modern Right. Probably the main reason people will not vote Republican is that idea that the Right is mean. The Right is Dad telling you to stop crying and clean your room, shake it off, it's just a scratch. The Left completely caves with a sob story, and like Newsom, they look for them. Lots of people want Mom in charge, because they have more power in that relationship. Low fatherhood rates are exacerbating this, and the less you know and respect Dad, the less you vote Republican. Some Moms can and do assume Dad's role, those skew right.

Like all grifters he never talks about his accomplishments (because he has none). Never responsible for the Billions spent on programs that didn't work (were never going to work), and probably were never intended to work, just intended to pay his friends (and the cause) well, through public money, and give him something to talk about.

His High Speed Train to nowhere, the never-ending "Homeless" problem that he's been "fixing" for a decade or more (and keeps getting worse), his managing of the "5th largest economy in the world" which he managed into the ground...

Harun, the history of California Public Utilities Commission conspiratorial mis-regulation of PG&E is one of the great crimes of the last 70 years. Untold billions stolen, grafted, wasted. Hundreds or thousands killed. Billions in property losses. Senior employees of PG&E "failing up" into cushier government jobs.

A politician with prosopagnosia would be a real hoot in a comedy series, but it wouldn't be good in real life. Many politicians, though, are so dumb that they can't tell North from South Korea, and could well mistake "Rocketman" for some other world leader.

Because the country isn’t just CA. Figure that he would likely carry the states that Biden won honestly (ignoring the ones he carried with visible cheating). And nothing else. Figure the Left Coast, the east coast, from VA up to VT, plus maybe MN and CO. And a sea of red in between. But then, AOC could probably carry the same states.

What the Dems need is someone relatively sane from the Midwest as their nominee. Josh Shapiro would be good - except he is Jewish. And no Jew is going to win the nomination of the antisemitic party. Plus, they would lose too many of their Muzzie votes.

Bruce Hayden said...

“Blacks vote 9 to 1 for the Democrat candidate. Why does he waste time pandering to them?”

That may have been the case up until 2024, but Trump made significant inroads with Black men that year. In any case, Dems need Blacks for their own egos and self worth. They pretend that they are the good people because they aren’t racists, which means that they aren’t anti-Black, since they are losing Hispanics so quickly. Plus, Blacks are significantly over represented in the ranks of government workers, and esp unionized govt workers.

Of course, the Dems are the racist party. And have been for 200+ years now, esp with Blacks. They were the party of slave owners, Jim Crow, the KKK, DEI, Affirmative Action, Reparations, etc.

Josh WAS sane. You seen him recently?

The Dems basic problem is that over half of their primary voters aren't sane. Unit that changes, they're screwed.

After Vance wins twice, the Dems will probably be hungry enough for victory to put up a sane politician.

I'll just point out the last time they did that was Clinton in 1992, and their immediate lurch to the Left once he got into office created the Republican Congressional takeover of 1994. Before that, Republicans had House majorities twice, each time for one term, over the course of 62 years.
Since then, the Dems have never controlled the House for more than 4 years art a time
