I hope you're keeping warm... at least most of the time. I recommend getting out and challenging yourself to feel the cold. It's thrilling. But watch out for exploding trees!
And of course, write about whatever you like in the comments.

I had an exploding tree on my property. It was a dead Aspen that my buddy hit with a 50 caliber mini ball from his muzzleloader.
During the many years I lived in Minnesota, every winter my relatives in more temperate places ( anyplace else ) would gloat about how much less cold it was where they were. Now that I live in the Southwest I am tempted to pay them back. But, no. I have few virtues to signal, but let that be one.
The nearly 20 years I lived in Danbury/Newtown, CT the coldest I was out in was about 5-6 below zero. The coldest I ever experienced was in Lexington, KY during my freshman year in college- we had a January morning in 1985 that was 20 below zero.
All three rioters who led the storming of the Minneapolis church have been released from the pokey. This would include William Kelly who dared AG Blondie to arrest him. Justice in Minneapolis/ Minnesota is a joke. We are two different countries. Let’s split and get it over with.
BBC news tonight is all about Trump's throwaway remark at Davos about how we never really relied on NATO troops - yeah, they did some things in Afghanistan, etc.
Well at least he got the BBC to praise British soldiery. CC, JSM
I think it’s too hot in Florida. It’s in the 80s and even the 90s. I don’t like when it gets that hot here in the summer but I think it would be demoralizing to have temperatures like that in January. I like the winter. It’s beautiful. It’s crispy. And it stimulates courage and strength
"Justice in Minneapolis/ Minnesota is a joke."
Whether it’s liberals peacefully protesting a murder and a child abduction in Minneapolis or conservatives threatening a bloody insurrection in Washington DC, both sides have shattered the norms of civilized behavior.

The child was not abducted.
He was abandoned by the father and the mother refused to take him into the home.
According to you, they should've let the kid sit out there and freeze.
You're a fucking liar and I'm sick of it.
Glad you got out there. Wonder if you'd walked down mainstreet in Madison what it wouldve look like. Full of bundled up cheeseheads or a ghost-town?
Florida is way too muggy and hot in summer.

Yancey @ 10:48, I remember the 1985 cold snap in western Kentucky (around Owensboro, about 150 miles west of Lexington). The actual temperature was well below zero, and with the wind chill it was being reported around –50 degrees. It was one of those cold spells where the air hurt to breathe and nothing mechanical wanted to work.
And then there was the Blizzard of 1978. The snow drifted so evenly across open fields that it looked like a frozen ocean. You could stand there and watch utility poles disappear into the drifts and then reappear in the distance. In some places people even drove vehicles across the frozen Ohio River.
That storm hit in early January, and between the depth of the snow and the prolonged cold and more snow, we didn’t see green grass again until after Easter.
I enjoy being able to choose when to experience cold weather. Winter in the extreme north lasts too long.
Trump's approval rating is hovering near his all-time lows with negative majority views across all subjects -- economy, immigration, foreign policy, etc. which is a significant shift from a year ago. Nearly every data point suggests a 15% shift to Democrats which would lead to a gain of around 40 seats in the House and perhaps even Democratic control of the Senate.
Trump's Greenland about-face also shows there are guardrails, despite what Trump says, to his actions which he understands. They need to be stronger, but they are there. There is no desire among the American public to acquire Greenland, or Canada, or Venezuela, or anywhere else for that matter. That translated into not much support in Congress, even among Republicans. The Market also weighed in with strong disapproval as Trump doubled-down on his Greenland threats, and that may have been decisive.
Trump will be diminished a year from now and perhaps even a month from now. The Supreme Court is likely to knock out his tariffs, which he may find more difficult to erect under a different statute than he thinks, and who knows what the eventual release of the Epstein Files will bring.
We moved from MA to NC 3 years ago. Traded cold months in winter for hot months in summer. Not clear any area works perfectly, so thinking the migratory people are on to something. I personally miss a good snow and cold spell. It does bring out the hardy and hearty in everyone. That said, wearing shorts in January brings out a good middle finger flippancy at winter at times which is also a bit rejuvenating…;)
We lived in new jersey for eleven years that was enough cold
Snowmageddon approaches. Some stores have already announced that they won't be open on Monday. Some local government offices were closed today because of the cold.
Will it live up to the hype probably not
Ann Althouse, “ I like the winter. It’s beautiful. It’s crispy. And it stimulates courage and strength.”
Agree!
I, personally, have never paid attention to the weather.
When recruits for Husker football - or really anyone for that matter - complain about Nebraska’s weather, I say get over yourself and grow up.

I started reading Rebecca Donner's book "All the Frequent Troubles of Our Days" about Mildred Fish Harnack, an American lit professor living in Germany with her German husband, who became a spy against the Nazis and paid with her life in February 1943.
Madison, and even Lake Mendota, are mentioned in the section on her graduate schooling at UW.
It's a bit novelistic for me, which is a matter of taste, but what bothers me more are the simple mistakes--like calling the German contraction for a group investigating the Soviet planned economy an acronym, when it's just a standard shortening (ARPLAN-- Arbeitsgemeinschaft jadda jadda Planwirtschaft) and writing that Kaiser Wilhelm's family had ruled Germany since the 11th Century.
Far from the 'impeccable research' promised by the Publishers Weekly blurb. At least Donner isn't described as an historian.
Just looked outside. Almost 2" of fresh light and fluffy lake effect. When I'm dome with my glass of locally produced wine, remembering the motto Finger Lakes means wine, NAPA means auto parts, I'll spend a few minutes dusting it off my driveway. Taking care of it bit by bit is far easier then letting it pile up and then trying it. Still haven't pulled out my tractor with front loader this year. Hoping to get by without it. Sunday will be the tell. This isn't even part of the big storm. For teh previous 2 nights we had 2-3 inches each night. According to my outside thermometer 5°F right now. Predicted low for the night 1°F. Single digit temps aren't common for the area, but also aren't all that unusual. It happens, we deal with it.
Kak is a lying bum.
"Gavin is a National Embarrassment."
well that's true.
We have a two days left of high temps in the fifties and forties, and then dropping into the teens or slightly lower Sunday and Monday nights. The forecasted rain over the weekend will turn to ice, so Monday is likely to be a mess. It could be worse…
’Nearly every data point suggests a 15% shift to Democrats which would lead to a gain of around 40 seats in the House and perhaps even Democratic control of the Senate.’

Ridiculous rationalizations from Althouse and Begley,
Winter in Tucson is crisp, sunny and varies between 40 and 70 degrees. You can spend a lot of time outside in comfort. Local travel is great because there are no snow or sleet delays.
Yes. We have hot summers. That has always been the time we return to the Midwest for hot, humid weather. As a former Midwesterner, I have no regrets about moving to the desert where we have color all year long. And no fricking snow!
Lefty kak does nothing but lob spitballs day in day out. If it were up to the kaks, we would live in a world in which there were 50k immigrants of unknown provenance pouring across the border every month. Washington, DC would still be a dystopian hellscape of homeless bums, drug addicts and car jackers dominating public spaces. Iran would be putting the squeeze on every state in the Middle East, and the Europeans would still have their hands out for us to pour billions into Ukraine ad infinitum. Maduro is still doing the Macarena and looting Venezuela. The consortium of ngos that comprise usaid are still exporting the preeminent American value that is LGBTQ rights, and skimming the taxpayer. HHS is still pushing pills for big pharma. And Minnesota is one big happy Democrat slush fund. You know, kak, there’s a lot I find cringey about DJT, but dang, it’s like he’s opened a window around here, and invited us to consider that maybe we don’t have to put up with this crap anymore. Cheers.
18 feels like 35?
Times really are a changing.
I have lived in South Florida, and lived basically on the Canadian border. Yes, there are bitterly cold days in winter in the North, but most winter days are a lot more moderate, between the high teens, not really uncomfortable if you are dressed properly, to the forties, which can be quite balmy. In South Florida, it's 90 degrees, 90% humidity starting in April, right through October.
I don't get the hate for snow, to be honest.
There was a short period of time I couldn't see anybody's blog avatar. It was highly irregular. But, I didn't say anything and played along because maybe it was just me and everyone else could see the avatars. You are supposed to say something only if you see something, like little people. If you don't see anything, don't say anything until someone else says something and then the flood gates open and you can say your peace.

The avatars helps when you want to find where people park; what with all the anonymous cars, the visuals are key.
Speaking of parking. I can't imagine NYC Storm Woke Parking Rules. Or is it rude to look forward to a disaster.
Friday night is always busy for Uber drivers. Not tonight, however. It's literally the quiet before disaster.

NASA has announced that the unnamed medical condition experienced by an unidentified crew member was diagnosed by a portable ultrasound machine. The canceled spacewalk was supposed to have been taken by Zena Cardman, mission commanded and unmarried woman. Could it be that she started having morning sickness? Maybe I’m just too suspicious in my dotage.
I remember that cold snap! It was -21f. My roommate and I went over to the weed man’s place to jump his car because his battery was dead. Other people joined and we had a good old time. My future brother-in-law, walked a couple of miles to join us!
At one point we wanted pizza but all the pizza joints were closed. Long John Silvers was the only restaurant open. So we called and placed an order for 100 hush puppies.

President Donald Trump has been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency, a condition that affects blood flow in the legs and is common in people over 70, the White House said on Thursday. So he likely is sucking down Eliquis to thin his blood and reduce the threat of stroke,
He may also have a problem with irregular heartbeat known as atrius fibrulation which is countered with blood thinner as well.
But the real solution for swollen ankles is weight loss which can be be aided by taking a semaglutide (Ozempic®, Wegovy®) or tirzepatide (Mounjaro®, Zepbound®) drug shot into belly fat every week.
Donald Trump reportedly drinks 12 cans of Diet Coke each day, which overloads his body with caffeine, Caffeine can have a diuretic effect, which may lead to dehydration and potentially cause the body to retain fluid, resulting in ankle swelling. Twelve bottles of water would make a perfect replacement for Diet Coke.
Some of us old folks have been down this road for years and mysterious bruising from bumping into anything happens - but this constant bruising on the top of his hands is weird.
I also have chronic venous insufficiency and I have taken Eliquis since I was diagnosed with DVT(s) in my left leg about six years ago. If I start to bleed from a cut or scrape, it takes a while to stop it. People who take blood thinners need to be VERY careful about falls -- my dad, who was 81 and probably would have lived until his late 80s, slipped on a bathroom rug and fell, hitting his head on the bathroom towel bar. That began an internal brain bleed that caused his death within 48 hours. Actually not a bad way to go: he didn't realize what was happening about eight hours in, we all got to say goodbye to him, and it was quick and painless. He was taking Plavix due to having a stent put in several years earlier. They couldn't do anything for him as the brain surgeon said he would have bled out on the table. It has been my experience that every oldsters (mostly women) who fall and break a hip, get a death sentence from upstairs. Balance, my fellow old farts, balance!
I cannot disagree with Althouse's take about South Florida between (late) April and (early) October. I added those qualifiers because we PRAY that the long, hot summer doesn't begin on April Fool's Day or last until Halloween. I manage because of AC and due to living within walking distance to the ocean and surrounded by a river and the Intracoastal Waterway, there are nice breezes while outside. I walk 3-5 miles a day at daybreak and hang out at the inlet or beach during twilight. You manage. But I would rather suffer in the heat and humidity as I really hate being cold. Not THE cold, but how it affects me. Rollercoaster coming in a few days: Monday close to 80 and Tuesday in the 40s with a strong wind. Not complaining. Happy to be relatively healthy, alive, and enjoying all the winning with 47.

Let me break this down in as basic a manner as I can:
1. America elects a President that the Democrat/Media Complex does not like.
2. Democrats engage in violent riots over whatever their otherwise perfectly legal cause du jour might be.
3. "See? The fact that this guy is President is causing riots. If you vote for us this abnormal rioting that the President is causing will stop."
4. Democrats win next election. Riots stop.

Some photos from my border coverage during the Biden administration, when we were witnessing unaccompanied children being abandoned by smugglers at the border every single day.
18,954 of these children recovered by CBP in July 2021 alone.
Over 500,000+ by end of Biden term.
If you weren’t watching

Marcus and others, I chose the panhandle of Florida for the very reason you mentioned. It stays more moderate for about a month and a half longer than south Florida. The average high in January is 63 (PCB) while not warm feels pretty nice compared to -20 F. I live down here for 8 or 9 months and travel or stay in Minnesota the remainder.
I see the UK’s Starmer has been forced to retract the give away of the Chagos Archipelago and our military base on Diego Garcia. The reason? Donald J. Trump.
Say what you will about Carney, and I have never been a fan, and I think that his election was really bad for Canada, in my non-Canadian opinion, but what he said about the "Rules Based Order" that it was always a lie, just like people call me crazy for saying, that they have been gaslighting their population, just like I have always been saying, and what rules there are are based on who you are and who benefits from enforcing that rule or ignoring it, just like I have always been saying.
I am not the only one, obviously, but the people who have been saying this stuff, in my opinion, are right about more stuff than most. Anyway, it was refreshing to hear somebody in a position to know tip the hand that they just lie to us, just spin narratives, to control us.
Is there a PDF of these "rules" that we could download is an often asked question. What I have always said, and Carney just admitted, is that they are the same rules as Calvinball, which makes the world ultimately Hobbesian.
Western Pennsylvania: 15 inches of snow coming, and at least two weeks of bitter cold. Time to hole up, but: I took in a foster dog last summer, and the pooch has to be walked (no fence). Man, am I screwed.
That being said, I still think that Canada under Carney is making a wrong turn out of TDS, like this guy, who is Canadian explains way better than I could.

The exploding trees are reminiscent of the effect of German artillery on the 101st Airborne Division during the Battle of the Bulge. The shells hit the treetops in the woods in which they sheltered. The shrapnel’s arc was more devastating than had the shells hit the ground and exploded upward. The men’s foxholes were less effective protection in the woods. Think about these men and their suffering during our cold weather, and the world they bequeathed us.
I picture Trump in a sweat-stained wife beater giving ‘em a clout in the ear and administering the middle aged divorced white women renters with an extry one. That will cause some bruising to the hand if done right.

gadfly seems to be using AI. One of his posts had coherent paragraphs.
I don't see why some people argue with "Kak." I see it/him as part of a messaging machine that mechanically puts out the party line day after day. Arguing with it/him is like arguing with a parking meter.
@Gerda, is it okay if I keep laughing at them both?
@Althouse, of course you like it cold! We now know that the gene for the red hair you had in your younger days entered the modern human genome ftom Neanderthals, and the Neanderthals were a cold-adapted species of hominen.
I don’t bother reading Kak or Gadfly. One is a spambot and the other deranged. Nothing interesting there. Out of all the leftist performance artists I would say DINKY is somewhat interesting in a “can’t look away from a car crash” kind of way. Never know what to expect from that one.
“Why are you recording? I would ask that you not record.”
“It’s not going to be on Twitter,” the agent filming said. “It’s not going to be on anything like that.”
“We don’t want to create a false narrative,” the agent said.
"Some of us old folks have been down this road for years and mysterious bruising from bumping into anything happens - but this constant bruising on the top of his hands is weird."
Sheesh- it most definitely isn't weird, Dungfly- your preceding paragraph explains the bruising on the backs of his hands. Only someone who sits on his ass all day long would be mystified by bruising on the hands- an active person uses the hands all day long which means you bump them into things usually without even noticing it.
@TheTonus
"Funny how right after the video of Democrats terrorizing children at a church went viral, these fake stories about "ICE arresting children" started going up on every Democrat account."
My elderly father's thin skin bumps, bruises and bleeds really easily.
It sucks getting old - especially if you're a desperate hack named Gadfly.
If Gadfly ever saw my Mom's hands, he would think she is beating me??? The elderly bruise easy. It's a fact.
When World's Collide
I was arguing the other day about ICE Watch and realized that the differing narratives are no longer just "differing," they are now becoming lethal for lefty believers. I said: "Imagine that the police were going to pick-up a known gang member who was a known murderer. Would you ever, in your life, tell the mother of a small child to get in between the probably armed murderer and the armed police? Yet that is what ICE Watch is telling moms in Minneapolis to do." "Oh, no," came the response. "I would not protect a murderer but ICE is not picking up criminals; it is picking up sweet little Hispanics and Somalis who are working 15 hours a day trying to better themselves. Or US citizens, passing by who stop to help the Somali sweeties. Or five year-olds." And this was a solid belief. It explains why Renee/Rebecca Good thought the ICE agents wouldn't have "real bullets" in their guns and could be endangered with a car with impunity. But put that controversy aside.
The point is the news organizations are endangering citizens by incorrectly reporting the kind of people ICE is at present picking up. The news says ICE is picking up regular people while in fact, ICE is picking up "the Worst of the Worst" - murderers, rapists, child abusers. Isn't it clear that you would never tell a mom to get between the police and an armed murderer they were moving to arrest? And why would women be out there trying to keep rapists on the streets of Minneapolis? Because a migrant rapist, raping in his own community, is not really a rapey-rapist? And why would Minneapolis moms be risking their lives to keep child abusers safe in Minneapolis?
Why? Because the "mainstream" news and the lefty news outlets, which they believe, tells them otherwise. And that amounts to telling them that it is safe to get between ICE and a murderer. And they believe the deadly lie.
* (Renee Good's car wheels spun on ice or she would have seriously injured or even killed the man in front of her car at the moment her wheels spun. He shot her without waiting to see what she'd do when the car did move.)
Since moving to AZ (Mesa) ca. 8 years ago, I realize just how much I hate cold weather. Seattle didn't get that cold very often -- a couple of Winters it got down into the teens overnight -- but I still didn't like it. I grew up in WI. Went to school when it was minus degrees. Did a couple final exams at the UW when it was minus degrees. It didn't really bother me all that much because I didn't know about anything different.
The heat doesn't bother me that much. I go run a trail at 2 in the afternoon when it's 105*. If I need to work outside when it's like that, I just go slow and drink a lot. It's not that bad; people work outside here all Summer. I dislike it when the high temp is below 70 (note: with the dry air it feels at least 10 degrees cooler).
Don't miss snow or cold, at all. Don't wanna go up north during the Winter. Period.
* I don't do this >~105 because, while not overly difficult, I end up sweating profusely for an hour afterwards so it's not really worth the trouble.
No way! I am extremely impressed.
Live: Man shot by federal agent in south Minneapolis this morning, witnesses say ~ Minnesota Star Tribune
