Trump wore a lapel pin depicting himself.

Questioned about it, he said "Somebody gave me this. Do you know what that is? That's called a 'Happy Trump.' And considering the fact that I'm never happy—I'm never satisfied. I will never be satisfied until we make America great again. But we're getting pretty close, I'll tell you what. This is called a Happy Trump. Somebody gave it to me. I put it on."

And that's that. Somebody gave it to him and he put it on. Wore it on camera. I wonder what other things people could get him to pin onto himself just by giving it to him. He could be pranked so easily. But I suspect that he exercises some judgment about what to pin on himself.

And who attaches an image of himself to himself/herself?

It happens, mostly entertainment celebrities in T-shirts. Other examples, according to Grok:
  • Rihanna — Wore a T-shirt featuring a photo of her younger self with "Made in America" during her ANTI tour.
  • Kylie Jenner — Has rocked T-shirts with her own image (including bikini shots) and even launched a line of them.
  • Miley Cyrus — Spotted in graphic tees featuring her own face.
Is it a girly thing to do? Well, check out Nicolas Cage — "Look! Nicolas Cage wearing a Nicolas Cage t-shirt" — demonstrating the masculine version of self-image fashion:

Where can I get one?

Dave, are you asking for a Happy Trump pin or a Paris Hilton clone?

Amazon Dave!!

Nicholas Cage is a bit of a meme, so I think him wearing a T-Shirt of himself is somewhat self-effacing so a bit different than the motivation of the women mentioned. I'm not sure what to make of Trump's pin though. The pin isn't a noble and flattering depiction of him, but also not necessarily insulting either.

“He could be pranked so easily.”
Lol. It was the perfect response on his part.
When Bill Maher showed him a list of all the insults Trump made about Maher, Trump said, “Want me to sign that for you?” and promptly autographed the list. The guy has a sense of humor.

Trump has a great sense of humor, everyone seems to forget. Just laugh and enjoy the gift!

The entertainers who wear t-shirts with their own images on them are also exhibiting a sense of humor not normally found in Hollywood these days. Good for them.

It is somewhat odd that Grok used the verb 'has rocked' instead of something standard and non-idiomatic.

Why isn't the lapel pin wearing a lapel pin?

He doesn’t say who gave it to him but perhaps it’s someone he and his staff know. You think he’s vulnerable to a prank? If you buy into versions of Trump pushed by his enemies one would make this assumption. Learned nothing over the years…

What about Taylor Swift and her "no its becky" T-shirt? Does that count as a self-reference?

Prof, since it cross-references Paris Hilton, Miley Cyrus, and a Kardashian, shouldn't this get the Celebritneys tag? CC, JSM

Meh. It is in the dictionary. Also Grok apes what it finds out in the dirty interwebs…

Pick one up via Althouse Amazon Portal.

I frequently wear shirts with my image on them but that’s only because I am so damn handsome.

Ann Althouse said...

Thanks, Leland! Yeah, I think that's a good "commission earned" link for the lapel pin and I know this one is good.

JD Vance has laughed off and retweeted JD Vance memes. He even dressed up as Meme-Vance for Halloween.

I thought your mom started stenciling your image on your clothes so you could tell which ones were yours and you couldn’t read.

( I kid, I kid…)

That opens the door to infinite recursion and, probably, an unfortunate quantum level event.

I'd've guessed that's a South Park Trump but they tend to use an actual photo of Trump in their animations.

I'm sorry to bust the bubbles of others; but, this kind of stuff is just meant to be funny and anyone taking it for anything else is just absurd.

People need to get a life and do a MUCH better job of picking their hills to die on.

This is pure "stick my finger in your eye" kinda stuff and should never be taken seriously.

I remember when I was about 8 YOA, I noticed our box of Kelloggs corn flakes had a picture of the box on the front of the box. That was my first experience with pondering infinite recursion.

Infinite Trumps? Indeed the world could not survive all the exploding heads...

Remember the Trump baby balloons, this type of stuff is just pushback. Today you can’t ignore insults, you need to control the ground and demonstrate immunity. Guys like Romney just superiorly ignored these things and lost.

Please - Trump's narcissism requires that he talk about himself. He is not an entertainer even though he thinks he is.

If that's not an impeachable offense... certain Congress Critters don't know what is....

I love those! They are so cute! They only make me love Trump even more. Seriously. I am surprised he never adopted them (pun intended). Would be great to have one inside the fence on the North Grounds, looking back at the ones erected by protesters. He could dress it in seasonal costumes. New Year Baby Trump!! CC, JSM
