Trump live, now, at Davos.

A quote (re drug prices): "You've been SCREWING us for 30 YEARS!!!"

I checked in and the first thing I heard was Trump talking about corporations buying houses and how individuals don't get depreciation on their house but a corporation buying an investment house does.

He understands the problem at least.

Has anybody ever kept track of how many digressions Trump takes in official speeches like this here in Davos? Campaign speeches don't count.

One more thing to bet on.

Kakistocracy said...

This should be wild. Trump's press conference last night was a long, rambling, incoherent mess, even by his standards. He riffed on his usual concerns -- windmills, little fish in California, peace prize -- but also spent time looking at mugshots and muttering away to himself.

He's clearly sundowning at a rapid pace. There will be no place to hide in front of the world's media. Stay tuned.

I’m suprised that he’s addressing those globalist midwits, but I’m pleased that he’s delivering a dose of reality.

Trump is giving his greatest speech ever. Sure some points are over the top, but that’s Trump. No holds barred! I am loving it. His ability to mock friends and enemies is worthy of SNL.

"There are windmills all over Europe. There are windmills all over the place. And they are losers. One thing I've noticed is that the more windmills a country has, the more money that country loses, and the worse that country is doing. I haven't been able to find any wind farms in China." ~ Donald Trump

China leads the world in wind energy by a significant margin, particularly in terms of installed (cumulative) capacity, which is the standard primary metric for global leadership in this sector.

The only other politician I remember ever addressing the regularly, business as usual, asymmetric nature of trade deals was Inspector Ross Perot.

Trump is truly an American treasure. He will be appreciated after he's gone. 'Perhaps even more than Reagan'; I can hear Trump say.

Trump Says U.S. Won’t Use Force to Acquire Greenland ~
WSJ

There will be “negotiations” after which there will be an announcement that the US will put another base or two in Greenland, something it can already do (going down from 17 bases during the Cold War).

Trump will herald it as another “great achievement”.

Yes, Trump digresses, but this is how he commands everyone's attention. He speaks and people tune in. Even Kak can't help but to tune in. The speech was vintage Trump, covering his usual points, a bit unfocused and long, and spending too much time relitigating the past. Just as Trump lives rent-free in the heads of those suffering from Trump Derangement Syndrome, so the election cheats and Sleepy Joe live rent-free in Trump's head. It's been a year, so he needs to let go of obsessing with the past and keep his eye on the future. You can't watch the road ahead of you if you're constantly looking in the rearview mirror.

Sadly, the current Republican Congress seems pretty worthless. As far as I can tell, they've barely done anything to back up Trump's bold actions with legislation. You may see the next Democrat come in and do like Spanberger is doing in Virginia in reversing everything good that Youngkin did.

Many, many things to correct since we assumed the Big Papi role following WWII. Conditions got sufficiently out of whack and finally we are trying to unwhack them. More power to DJT.

It is hard not to see what a bad position he may have found himself in politically, vis a vis markets, however. When Reagan first won, there had been a 14-year bear market that still had a year and a half to go as Fed Chairman Volcker and he agreed to finish off the inflation once and for all. From August 1982 on, markets were moving rapidly higher and waving the all-clear flag. Rates came down gradually over time and things got good and then kept getting better.

But Trump has come in on top of a 16-year bull market, since the lows of the Supposedly Great Financial Recession. He has enjoyed a year of stocks topping. When that ends, which happened either last week, or possibly after one more quick short rally in the days immediately ahead, per the charts, the ensuing financial and wealth contraction is going to apply a vise in painful measure.

Looking at the 30yr yield you're not getting a cheaper mortgage. The shortest path to lower rates is a balanced budget, predictable economy, stable growth, strong alliances, and generally peaceful geopoliticals.

We have none of that with this administration and they’ve turned to blaming The Fed because their base doesn’t know any better.

I listened to the Greenland part and at the end I understood exactly why Trump wants Greenland - in the 21st century it is strategically necessary just as it was during World War II. And during World War II we had to defend it ourselves because Denmark succumbed to the Nazis in six hours. And we have been defending it ever since because the NATO allies have not been contributing their share to the costs of that defence. Yet Russia is still on the attack as we can see in the Ukraine. And Denmark, for example, said they were going to put $200,000,00 into defending Greenland in 2019 but they have not actually put even 1% of that amount in. The only thing that makes sense is for Greenland to belong to the country defending it, that's us.

And we are going to get it and we won't need force. If you look at a few of our recent military operations, it's obvious we could take it any time but we going to not use force and keep on not using force, till they give it to us. That bit is somewhat mysterious, but I take it to mean we will have a snowball fight with the forces flown in to oppose us, all 27 of them or whatever. I'm sure Delta and the Seals could manage that, or better yet, the kitchen crews from the Alaskan bases. Why shouldn't they have a battle ribbon from Operation Iceball? Or maybe we'll just land a boat, put up a flag, and tell the Danes to come take it down. While we go about our business actually defending ourselves, but Europe also.

It's interesting that Europe has sent more troops to defend Greenland from the US than to defend the Ukraine from Russia. Why is that?

Trump's drug price policies seem to be forcing European healthcare systems to pay more for drugs (or risk losing access to new treatments altogether). But it is a slow process. Many of the contracts European health sectors negotiated with drug companies are very long. And European countries are fighting tooth and nail to keep prices low because their budgets are stretched (those pesky migrants!!!!). So the American-European price gap is only gradually disappearing. But Americans are taking the right steps to end a sickening injustice. Eventually, we will get to a point where Europeans are paying their fair share and drug prices are equalized. This is an exciting development.

Drug price follies -
My primary drug, for heart failure, is Novartis Entresto, generically Sacubril-Valsartan, 100mg.
In the US this would cost Medicare $700-800 a month. It is an essential drug for this condition in the US as well.
It costs me in Spain @200 Euro monthly, and I am NOT covered by the Spanish medical plan (Sistema Nacional de Salud SNS), because I have never paid into it, we have private medical insurance, mostly net of drugs.
Entresto is a Swiss (Novartis) product.
The portion of medical R&D that costs major money in the US consists mainly of extensive trials and process obtaining FDA approval plus general CYA vs US liability risks.

Ronald J. Ward said...

You’re doing quite poorly here Beast, even by your standards. By definition, racism is a belief of superiority over another race or ethnic group. Trump expressed exactly that, on more than one occasion.

buwaya said...

There are many reasons for excessively high costs of drugs in the US. A big one is that the US FDA will not accept foreign drug trials or foreign nation approvals to permit US sales. Thus it forces redundant trials and approval processes to permit drugs in the US market. Hence US sales of drugs have to amortize costs of largely US-only "R&D".

buwaya said...

Thus US drug prices are mainly the result of excessive US regulatory burdens plus excessive US legal risk.

Both the FDA process-bloat and US legal risk are the result of the hypertrophied US legal system. That is just one result of millions of lawyers looking for income. Lawyers, simply by existing, are thus the cause of chronic economic sabotage. Lawyers are your primary internal enemies. They are also, as a class, the main supporters of the Democratic party.

Beasts of England said...

’You’re doing quite poorly here Beast, even by your standards. By definition, racism is a belief of superiority over another race or ethnic group. Trump expressed exactly that, on more than one occasion.’

Interesting that you are unable or unwilling to address any of my points, yet you claim I’m doing poorly. Facts aren’t racist, as much as you’d like it to be true, and claims of racism are ad hominem; a logical fallacy.

buwaya said...

Racism can be completely rational, if it is nuanced. Melanin alone does not make a man inferior. Tamils are very high performers in many fields, in spite of the fact that most are darker than US blacks. However one can quite easily make ethnic-national distinctions to select, for instance, optimal criteria for immigration. You have enough data to do this.
The recent blanket restrictions on visas by national origin are a crude attempt in this direction, using less-relevant metrics IMHO, but so be it.

Ronald J. Ward said...

Come on now Beast, you’re doing the deflective strawman dance.

Beasts of England said...
