"To think, 190 miles an hour down Pennsylvania Avenue — this is going to be wild."

Said Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, quoted in "Trump announces August auto race in downtown Washington" (Politico).
The Trump administration plans to usher a massive auto race into downtown Washington in August as part of a broader celebration of the United States’ 250th birthday, President Donald Trump announced Friday.

Flanked by senior officials in the Oval Office, Trump signed an executive order to launch what the White House has dubbed “the Freedom 250 Grand Prix of Washington, D.C. — the first ever INDYCAR street race in the Nation’s capital.”

And somehow, the left is going to find a way to bitch about this, too.

I'm glad I don't live in DC anymore, but I look forward to watching it on TV.
Will history remember Trump as "The Fun President"?

Last I checked the House of Representatives governed DC. I don't think the President can just shut down streets on his own.

Unless of course the House chooses to roll over. Again.

Has there ever been a less vivacious group of legislators?

Holiday, celebrate ... I love car racing and racing culture. Let's go!

This actually sounds really cool and a street race in DC will probably look pretty fucking cool on TV. Probably great ratings.

I just want to hear the following words from the race announcers...

"The racers are rounding Dupont Circle, Jackie!"

Sir Jackie Stewart, 86, married to his wife since 1962.

Will Trump host another Calendar Girls event as part of the celebration? So much fun!

While this sounds fun, I want to ask our fellow leftists who are all about "resisting tyranny!" if they endorse their fellow leftists in Utah, who are literally attacking and beating GOP signature gatherers and destroying gathered signatures as the state GOP is trying to gather signatures to overturn a law that the local state leftist judge used to forcibly redraw Utah's congressional map the way a far left group demanded.

Is it ok to destroy gathered signatures and put GOP signature gatherers in the hospital, leftists? Our local leftists are saying "Yes, we have to do it to resist Trump!"

Do you agree? https://www.deseret.com/politics/2026/01/29/utah-republican-signature-gatherers-assaulted-as-national-activist-groups-aim-to-repeal-redistricting-law/

That’s about as good as it gets!! And what a circuit…

’Maybe we should ask Renee Good…’

I’ll go ahead and bet $20 that a protestor with the same mental and emotional instabilities as Good will try to interfere with the race.

It's bound to be a lot like an F1 street race (e.g., Monaco; search for a video). This means loud cars going pretty slow around tight corners and fast down the straights. This means very few opportunities to pass (versus a NASCAR oval track).

Trump is doing this at least in part because the LOUD LOUD LOUD LOUD LOUD race cars will get into the heads of the very wealthy left-wing people who live near downtown D.C. Some of them will be disturbed while eating croissants and drinking espresso in corner cafes. Some will be jolted awake in bed. Some will surely claim PTSD -- as did city Canadians during the honking trucker COVID blockade a few years ago.

These are LOUD LOUD LOUD LOUD LOUD race cars.

As cities go, DC is pretty wide open--a nice venue for a race.

Trump is trying to tell America that DC is their city--have some fun with it!

As D.D. says--it will look cool and have great ratings. Glad we agree on something, D.D.

Lance--why would a Republican House oppose this?

They should know by now that nothing good comes from inviting Trump fans to DC for something wild.

Trump will get more congressional seats for this than he would for blasting 5 ayatollahs!

I was being unclear, I know that the voter/ayatollah response is not linear. Pick your own curve, but it will saturate at 2 or 3 ayatollahs.

For several years, we had a race in my city and neighborhood. I hated it. As I predicted, the city lost a lot of money on. It was years before all the infrastructure installed for it was finally removed. It was noisy and disruptive. I am all in favor of Trump bringing it to DC!

Somebody, a couple of years ago, did a test comparing NASCAR and Formula 1 engines. Turns out they are nearly equal in every aspect. Formula 1 makes its power in a higher RPM range than a NASCAR engine.
It would be interesting to see if a NASCAR motor would last for a whole F1 race.

Rustygrommet said...

I'd like to see Jokkis racing in the US.

NASCAR races are up to 600 miles on ovals and usually 250 or so on road courses. Their races last an hour or two longer than an F1 race. The engines are plenty durable.

Can we get John force to run for president?

Yeah different kind of racing, uniquely American.

He is like the Trump if the trump would just lose his shyness and subtlety.

John Henry

Rustygrommet said...

Yeah, RJ, but NASCAR basically just uses two gears and is running flat out. F1 can go from 200 to 25 mph and anywhere in between in the course of one lap. Times 250.

Rustygrommet said...

Jokkis is Finnish stock car racing. But different. Paved and dirt track. Run what ya brung, but it can't cost more than 1000$. And at anytime if another racer wants your car you have to sell it to them. I think the youngest you can be is 14.

True on ovals, but NASCAR races at Laguna Seca, Watkins Glen, COTA (like F1), and other road courses (six or more road races last year). For three years they raced on the streets of downtown Chicago and will probably do so again. So yes, they use brakes and shift gears for a decent chunk of their schedule.
