"Look at these terrible people who are interfering with law enforcement. Don’t they deserve to get executed in the middle of the street in the United States of America?"

Said State Representative Aisha Gomez, a Minneapolis Democrat, sarcastically characterizing the motive behind the release of new video, which you can see at "New Cellphone Video Shows ICE Agent’s Perspective Before Minneapolis Shooting/The Department of Homeland Security posted a clip of the video on social media and said it was taken by the agent, who killed a 37-year-old woman in the shooting" (NYT)(gift link).

And consider this:
@soogia1 Everything in this video is my personal opinion based on the publicly released footage. I’m questioning what appears to happen on screen and why it unfolded that way. #Minneapolis #Minnesota ♬ original sound - Soogia (SOO-jee-yah)

I’m seeing what I saw and I see an identity politics and victim narrative from a crazed MN liberal woman. She’s trying to stir up another George Floyd riot.

1. Renee was not married to that woman; not that it makes a difference.

2. These two women had no business blocking the street and harassing ICE while they are doing their jobs.

3. The cops told her to get out of her car and she refused.

4. Renee had her older two kids taken from her because she was living with that woman. One of them (not clear to me which) put out cigarettes on one kid’s arm.

5. Renee and her partner are mentally ill and the Left whips up these people to create violence; all in the name of the Resistance.

6. I hope Minneapolis is still standing in May when I drive up to attend my daughter’s graduation from the University of Minnesota law school. She’s at the top of her class and has a great job with Big Law.

Further, the fact the Left is making their stand against ICE arresting the worst first, effectively shielding rapists and child molesters, tells me how truly dependent Democrats are on illegal votes. .

Per one of the initial videos, her front tires were pointed to the left and spinning out while the agent was in front of the car. Ms Good turned the wheels to the right after that. To say the car was headed to the right all along is not true. If the wheels didn’t spin due to ice, the agent would have been hit more directly than he was.

I don’t know whether it was a proper use of force. At best it seems like it’s on the line. But damn if the left doesn’t totally abandon credibility when they make these arguments that insist we throw away all common sense and not believe our own eyes and ears.

This is all mind reading. She can't know what he was thinking as he walked around the car.
It's reasonable to speculate that he didn't particularly like the women or their behavior, but the idea that he decided to shoot them because he didn't like their taunts seems extremely unlikely.
It seems like she's projecting on to him what she likes to believe all men think when a woman questions their masculinity.

Anyone who has held their phone for filming a long event or even just talking on speaker knows that you switch hands all the time, especially if you're multi-tasking. The agent was right handed. He switched the phone to his left to scratch his nose for all we know.
He called her an f'ing bitch after she punched it and hit him with the car, but before he knew if he'd hit her or not. His adrenaline was no doubt spiking. It's not any kind of evidence of premeditation.

Contrary to the opinion expressed in the video, the fact that the agent was walking around the car filming with his cell phone is a strong indication that he was relatively relaxed and didn't at all expect this situation to go so bad so quickly. I don't think anybody there thought things would go like they did.
These women put themselves into a potentially very dangerous situation and I don't think they understood that. They seemed to think it was a game and that they could trust these officers to understand what they were doing and not hurt them. Worst case in their minds was likely that they'd be detained and released and then they'd talk and laugh about it over drinks with their friends. I think they'd been pushing their luck a lot lately and they were a little drunk on it, and they pushed it too far.

She was in the wrong for what she did. But the situation also did not rise to the threshold officers are trained (and policy dictates) in which lethal force is approved.

I’m an ardent proponent of the importance of law enforcement and obeying law enforcement. I’m ALSO a proponent that to much is given (power), much is required. That includes using lethal power in the line of duty. The officer used deadly force in a split second while maneuvering his body to the side of a vehicle and then extended his body over the vehicle to aim. He chose to do this in the midst of an otherwise non violent confrontation. I pray this is not another circle the wagons situation.

What strikes me here is that no one on the right can even entertain the possibility that the officer was in the wrong. The standard is here is no deadly force except when reasonably required to prevent death or serious bodily injury. It's hard to see how the two shots fired through the window from the side of the car met that standard. It's also hard to see how the smiling woman we see in the video, with her dogs in the back seat, can reasonably be understood to be dangerous. One would think these facts would counsel being open minded, until more is known. Yet Trump, Vance, Noem, and most of the readers on this blog have offered a definitive view, before any investigation. That's also hard to defend.

"What strikes me here is that no one on the right can even entertain the possibility that the officer was in the wrong."

I consider myself to be "on the right" but also capable of independent thought. I'm bothered by the universal one-sidedness of this as well. I train with firearms and have been in trainings around legal expectations and requirements for use of deadly force. Supposedly a lot on the right have done similar.....yet the major voices I see don't seem able to say it's possible for Renee Good to have been in the wrong AND for the officer to have not used deadly force correctly.

Sadly, similarly, the same can be said on the Left. There's no acknowledgement that her parking sideways on a street to block ICE or that her ignoring their orders and accelerating her vehicle away from them when an officer was telling her to exit the vehicle AND another officer had just been in front of the vehicle (and in fact still was partially) when she began accelerating, was a combination of terrible judgement, ignoring lawful orders, and placing law enforcement in harms way through her actions. Her actions fully justified her being placed under arrest that day, and clearly posed real physical risk to present officers, even if I do not believe from the videos I've seen that she posed unavoidable deadly harm to the officer who fired (as he easily evaded her vehicle while simultaneously pulling his firearm, extending his body to aim, shoot, and still hold a cell phone in another hand).

Both the ICE agent and Renee were in the wrong here. To me, that's clear as day from what I've seen to date. Yet for whatever reason, discourse on those merits seems lost on almost all sides.

People who have strong feelings and rush to comment rush to comment with their strong feelings. People who wait wait. And in a sense, we're all still waiting for further developments. I wouldn't say in this case, or in the case of the Kirk shooting, that there's unanimity on the left or on the right.

One thing that influences my opinion is that the ICE officer was hit by a car and dragged 100 yards last year. Did that mean his reaction this time had some justification? Or did it mean that he should have been shifted to other activities? I don't know, but it does add a complication to the case.

Also, the mixture of "social justice war" with the mom's club 'write your own adventure' fun and games doesn't sit well. Stop thinking that harassing federal agents doing their job is a game with no consequences.

Stephen said...

TreeJoe, That is a balanced view, and I appreciate it. The Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC), 30 years ago when I went thru, had extensive training on vehicle stops, including local amateur actors hired as roleplayers to give you grief and increase the stress level. Also video-based shoot/don't-shoot training (not looking at your computer screen, but on a video wall with a laser mockup of your service weapon). And of course conventional range training so that when you decide to shoot, you actually hit the person you're shooting at. Oh, and training on the law of use-of-force.

All that was in the first Clinton term, at the very beginning of the woke march through government. I can only imagine that the current FLETC training includes lots more on de-escalation and judgment.

But sometimes the other guy makes the judgment to stay escalated. CC, JSM

Either way, you people are sick in the head from the social media algorithm mind virus. You are displaying the same exact response that the crazy fucked up Libturds who were cheering the assassination of Charlie Kirk.

You are being a whiny sad sack.

Nobody is happy this woman got shot. She was a retard who let other people including her "wife" get her to do stupid shit.

I wont be happy when the people who trained her to do this are executed.

But it does need to happen. If you want to be nice you can exile them. But they can't stay here.

Consider what the reaction would have been if she had, in fact, run him over, which would have been quite probable had her wheels not spun out for that first half of a second. Which of the commenters above would claim it was just an accident and she was blameless because she was trying to drive away from a situation she accidentally got herself into?

Peachy: "We are not celebrating her death"

I am. Enough of these people have to die so that they stop being tragedies and just become statistics. Statistics that influence the behavior of the group.

Can't let these people repeat 2020. That led to four years of oppression and the near-fall of the republic. All because people were afraid of being called the baddies. The proper response is to double down on the righteousness of these shoots. Respond to faux outrage and mourning with ridicule. Alinsky all the way.

HEY HEY HEY RENEE! HOW MANY COPS DID YOU RUN OVER TODAY? NONE, YOU STUPID BITCH! CC, JSM

There are a couple of slow mo videos of her still of the agent pulling his weapon. They show Good’s front left tire spinning on ice before he pulls. Obviously the engine was revving as he was standing in front of the vehicle. Her intention was immaterial at that point. Also, if misogynists were as rampant as these liberal women claim, there would be a bounty on them.

None of these guys wants to be involved in a shooting. I bet it worries them more than anything except being killed. It can ruin your life and send you to jail for a long time. That's why he called her a bitch, but none of that matters either. It's all about if he had a reasonable fear she was going to run him over, which he already experienced once.

What this woman is doing is using a claim of misogyny and toxic masculinity to fire up a stereotype and take a warm swim in her bigotry.

Didn’t Chris Rock have a video on being stopped by the police?

Yes. And had the anti-ICE training used it for instructional purposes, this would have never been a story.

What strikes me here is that no one on the right can even entertain the possibility that the officer was in the wrong.

Quite the contrary, I certainly did entertain that possibility. So, I looked at the Byrd-Ashley Babbitt standard applied by the Biden DOJ. Along with the addition of Good wielding a dangerous weapon at the time, which Ashley Babbitt did not:

U.S. Capitol Police Lieutenant Michael Byrd was not charged in the fatal shooting of Ashli Babbitt on January 6, 2021, because federal investigators concluded his actions were a reasonable act of self-defense or the defense of others. The Department of Justice (DOJ) determined there was insufficient evidence to prove he willfully violated Babbitt's constitutional rights.

Key reasons for not pursuing charges included:

Justified Use of Force: The DOJ concluded there was no evidence to disprove that Byrd reasonably believed it was necessary to shoot to protect Members of Congress and staff who were being evacuated from the House Chamber.

Failed Compliance by Rioters: Byrd stated he gave multiple commands for the crowd to stop as they attempted to break through the barricaded doors of the Speaker's Lobby, which were ignored.

Protection of Life: The Capitol Police internal investigation found his actions were within department policy, noting that he potentially saved lives by stopping a violent mob from accessing the House chamber.

Insufficient Evidence of Willfulness: To charge a law enforcement officer with a federal civil rights violation (18 U.S.C. § 242), prosecutors must prove the officer acted "willfully" to violate a constitutional right. The investigation found no evidence that Byrd acted with a "bad purpose" or malice.

Investigations and Outcomes

DOJ Investigation (April 2021): The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia announced it would not pursue criminal charges based on the evidence.

Internal Investigation (August 2021): The Capitol Police Office of Professional Responsibility cleared Byrd of wrongdoing, determining his conduct was lawful and in accordance with department policy.

Administrative Action: Byrd did not face internal discipline.

It depends on what you mean by "in the wrong." He should have been trained not to step in front or behind a vehicle driven by an uncooperative individual. Was he in the wrong to exercise his natural right to self-defense? There exist countries where self-defense is illegal, but the United States is not one of them, thankfully. Ergo, the question answers itself.

The standard is here is no deadly force except when reasonably required to prevent death or serious bodily injury. It's hard to see how the two shots fired through the window from the side of the car met that standard.

If in fact there were shots fired through the side of the window.

It's also hard to see how the smiling woman we see in the video, with her dogs in the back seat, can reasonably be understood to be dangerous.

So in your world, Stephen, there is no such thing as vehicular homicide? Honda Pilots weigh more than two tons, and being hit by one will do more than just "leave a mark." You need to consider that the woman was smiling because she though her elitist white female privilege would let her get away with injuring an ICE agent.

One would think these facts would counsel being open minded, until more is known.

You might consider whether you are in possession of genuine facts, and whether you are open-minded.

Yet Trump, Vance, Noem, and most of the readers on this blog have offered a definitive view, before any investigation. That's also hard to defend.

I've seen three videos, and all lead to the same conclusion. (1) She defied the lawful orders of a law enforcement agent. (2) She knew -- or should have -- realized that there was an agent in front of the car, and she accelerated anyway. She died of stupidity, and out in the real world, where I live, that tends to be pretty fatal.

Well, there's your problem, right there. Democrats don't believe that the rules they apply to themselves should also apply to people they don't like.

Hey Google AI,
Why was officer Byrd not charged in the shooting of Ashley Babbitt?

“Because she was advancing toward lawmakers with a violent mob, intent on stopping the certification of ballots by any means necessary. She broke through a window and was crawling through it with violent insurrectionists at her back.
That violent mob assaulted dozens of officers, causing several deaths, minutes before that dim bulb twat fucked around and found out.

but she has been sober for 5 years now.

A person is dead. That's really all there is here. Again, the person is dead. Anytime the state kills anyone, whomever that is, there's reason for skepticism. That doesn't mean it wasn't justified, but it's correct to look into it. I don't care who it is, but I do care about the facts. I don't care if she's white, or a woman. That doesn't matter. She's dead.

Why aren't you out burning stuff down with your illegal alien friends?

Don't you have some ICE officers to try to run over somewhere?

Good operated a progressive projectile (PP) of mass capacity interfering with legislative enforcement. Babbit was unarmed in a prone position escaping the Pelosi-rrection.

Anyone who obstructs an ICE agent in the performance of his duties needs to be arrested.

Anyone who, like she did, violently resists arrest needs to be shot and killed.

Any other questions I can help you with, State Representative Gomez?

Certainly, the public has a right, or perhaps a duty to monitor or observe our sworn law enforcement officers as they carry out their missions. However, as a civil society the public also has an obligation to respect the law and to reserve itself from obstructing or impeding carrying out that mission.
Don't do the thing that will make you dead before exhausting legal recourses. Democrats need to SERIOUSLY lower the temperature.
