I hope James Carville is doing satire.

About 24 hours ago, I said out loud, here at Meadhouse, "I'm waiting for Trump haters to say this was done to distract us from Epstein."

I'd like to think anyone saying that is doing satire, but James Carville really commits:

The word 'commit' attached to a post about James Carville is a fit, if ever there was a fit. Good old James was always on a different path. And now that path is so far removed from the real world, it's almost sad to listen to him. He's left us all far behind.
But within the cacophony of Leftists pulling for the wrong people at every turn in this age, he is but a gnat on a cow's behind. He's just one of many, shouting into the wind about Trump this, Trump that.

No one has ever done more brain damage to more people than Donald Trump. He is the worm that winds inside of their brains. All day long.

Trump’s already given the game away- it’s about the oil.
The Epstein distraction was simply a bonus, as was it for his retaliatory vetos, as was his windmill fiasco driving up energy cost, as was his affordability crisis.

And now he’s eyeing the western hemisphere, as the Gulibles cheer.

Wilbur said...

How many decades old is that picture of Epstein and Trump that Carville displays behind him? What evidence do you have of Trump's wrongdoing?

We're still waiting. But the walls are closing in, right?

The Epstein info has been more damaging to the left and especially Bill Clinton at this point. You’d think Carville would be wanting people to forget about Epstein. I wonder if Bill will give him a call.

WWPaulKlee said...

About 15 years ago, James Carville was the keynote speaker at the dinner for a PAC dinner for dermatologists lobbying congress for restoring or increasing basic research funding. Carville told the meandering chestnut about being pulled over by a state trooper, while his wife corrected his misrepresentations. In the tale, he reached over and smacked his wife as she spoke up. The room was filled with zero hilarity. Even then he lacked the neural connections to know what a fool he was making of himself. Seems he’s fallen further downhill. Sad.

mezzrow said...

Year two hasn't actually started yet. That happens on the 21st. It's still early. Carville is already as broken as the Alabama defense in the fourth quarter of the Rose Bowl.

Indiana's Rose Bowl victory was also part of the plot to distract us from the main focus of our lives which is, of course, proving that Jeffrey Epstein and Trump were raping little girls. Carville's busy looking for more evidence.

Heh.

Tim @ 7:07, you’re selectively choosing a justification. Trump clearly stated the U.S. will take a share. That explains the objective to anyone not guzzling the koolade. Trump goes further with a dishonest justification.

“We built Venezuela’s oil industry with American talent, drive, and skill, and the socialist regime stole it from us during those previous administrations. This constituted one of the largest thefts of American property in the history of our country. Considered the largest theft of property in the history of our country. Massive oil infrastructure was taken like we were babies.”

Let’s not confuse “we” with the American tax payers.

U.S. companies did once dominate Venezuelan oil operations but they lost control after nationalization.

Venezuela legally owns its natural resources under international law.

There is no legal basis for the U.S. government to claim Venezuelan oil as U.S. property.

A president cannot legally justify seizing another country’s resources simply on the claim of restitution from past nationalization.

Trump’s resonates the political rhetoric and mendacity that American citizens in general were shortchanged but it simply isn’t true. And it is not grounded in accepted legal principles of property rights or international law.

Oh, and he’s promised “boots on the ground” to assist in this rich man’s bank robbery.

U.S. oil companies held contractual interests under Venezuelan law, not U.S. constitutional property rights, and Venezuela’s nationalization was an exercise of sovereign authority recognized in international law.

Any compensation disputes are resolved through arbitration, not the Fifth Amendment.

The deeper problem is that the president is declaring a wrong, judging it, and enforcing a remedy himself, using taxpayer-funded military force to collect an unadjudicated private claim — collapsing Congress, the courts, and the presidency into one office, which is exactly what the Constitution was written to prevent.

Key Actions Taken by the Obama Administration
Venezuela Defense of Human Rights and Civil Society Act of 2014: This act, signed in December 2014, required the President to implement sanctions (visa bans and asset freezes) against Venezuelan officials responsible for violence and human rights abuses during protests in 2014.
Executive Order 13692: Issued in March 2015, this order declared the situation in Venezuela a "national emergency". This established the legal basis for blocking assets and suspending U.S. entry for individuals involved in significant violence, human rights abuses, ordering the arrest of those exercising freedom of expression or assembly, or engaging in significant public corruption.

Legal authority was granted by the Obama Administration (technically the Bush Administration set the initial legal framework, but Obama used that framework in relation to Venezuela). It just took 2 decades for enforcement to occur.

Ronald J. Ward said...

Don’t think so Leland. Sanctions and indictments aren’t dormant war powers. No administration — Bush, Obama, or otherwise — received congressional authority to invade or govern Venezuela.

Eva, even if everything you say is true, motive still isn’t authority. By that logic, any powerful country gets to decide when another country has forfeited sovereignty — and history hasn’t been kind to that idea.

There was a deep dive into Epstein's life in the New York Times, and plainly one of Epstein's strategies was to insinuate himself into the lives of powerful people in any way he could.

There was another point made in that story, which was that Epstein got hired by 'Ace' Greenberg, under his strategy of hiring poor, smart, and hungry young men into his organization, Bear Sterns, you know, the same types of guys who came up with securitizing mortgages, the 'brilliant' idea that led to the crash of 2008. Bear Sterns was ground zero of that crash.

There seems to be an illusion that if you get a brilliant person, they can see ideas that nobody else ever thought of, you know, like Beethoven could create his Ninth Symphony purely out of his intellect.

What are some other things that happened in this era? Oh, that's right, certain "very smart" people decided that it would be a good idea to experiment with gene splicing coronaviruses, you know, to end disease.

Bob Boyd said...

What is the justification? I'll tell you.
It was successful. Maduro is in the slammer and the Venezuelan people are jubilant. No American servicemen died. The operation was a huge win. Like it or not, that's how it works.
After the failure of the Bay of Pigs, John F. Kennedy told a journalist that, “victory has 100 fathers and defeat is an orphan.” Trump rolled the dice and won his bet. Americans love that. People love that.
Academic regurgitations from anonymous trolls who hate every breath Trump and his supporters take won't stack up against that. They're boring and irrelevant.
What do you expect people to do with that stuff? Say,
'The outcome is wonderful, but surely we must impeach Trump?'
To say,
'America must punish her bold and successful leaders and thereby punish herself in the name of endlessly debatable legal opining?' Please.

So. No the US isn't stealing oil. The US has leases and crude contracts to fulfil. The US oil companies are going to have to fix a lot of oil infrastructure before they begin. There is nothing cheap in any part of an oil field, or a refinery either.
