Holy shit, what are we going to do?"

I was a Rubio man. And then when Rubio was out, I was like, oh shit, I guess it's Ted Cruz. And then Cruz was out. "Let's rally around John Kasich boys." And then it was the 2016 election, Darth Vader vs Cruella de Ville. And I had to vote for the pothead Libertarian.

After Trump was elected, I was like, "I signed the Never Trump pledge. My fucking name is floating around on a Never Trump pledge. IRS audit? Maybe?" And nothing happened. After several months of normality and peace, I was like, "oh, he's just another Republican. Boy, I got that wrong."

I feel bad for the Democrats (and some RINOs!) who have to suffer from 12 whole years of TDS. Even when he was out of office, they couldn't shake the fear. For me, 2016 was a stressful year, and I got over it. Life moved on. I cannot imagine having TDS for over a decade. This happens again and again and again. Right now, the Death of Our Civil Liberties!! refrain is all about ICE, the "goons," the "paramilitary force," the "Gestapo" - but whose civil liberties are being systematically* threatened, much less denied? Even Matt Taibbi is expressing concern about the administration's commitment to the 1A (most recently, I think, about that WaPo? reporter whose computer and phone were seized by the FBI because a guy who was fired for sharing classified information had been communicating with her - please be gentle if I've gotten these details wrong), though at least he does point out that Biden and Obama were as bad if not worse.

What I see is that an adversarial press, irritating and frustrating as they are since they're only adversarial in one direction, forces more transparency and ensures the robust health of the 1A, and the Trump administration is doing nothing to interfere with it. So I cannot join in any Death of Our Civil Liberties!! chorus because it's not happening.

The Minneapolis protestors obviously think it is, either with regard to them (although no one is preventing them from protesting) or with regard to the illegal aliens whom they want to shield from deportation (although deportation is not an infringement of an illegal alien's civil liberties not natural rights).

* I'm employing the lefty tactic of adding an adjective to a term under discussion: I am sure that some isolated infringement of civil liberties has taken place and will continue to take place, because ICE agents are human and imperfect. But the infringement is not systematic. And I support continual review and commitment to improving individual agents' practices.; 1/30/26, 8:50 AM
