At least he's in the Injustice Hall of Fame.

ADDED: Who else in in the Injustice Hall of Fame? Well, Tolstoy never won the Nobel Prize in Literature. Gandhi never won the Nobel Peace Prize. Alfred Hitchcock and Stanley Kubrick never won a Best Director Oscar. The Monkees are not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The Ken Doll is not in the National Toy Hall of Fame. And Hillary didn't get to be President.

Bill Belichick and Tom Brady should be inducted into the Hall of Fame at the same time. Brady doesn’t become eligible until 2028, because players have a 5 year wait from retirement while coaches have only a 1 year wait.

I suppose the reason for that difference is that coaches are more likely to die within 5 years of retirement than players. On the other hand, maybe Belichick should not be eligible as he is still actively coaching college football.

It will be a cloud on this year’s inductees, who each will be compared to Bill Belichick.

I read some things yesterday speculating why this obviously qualified coaching candidate was not selected.

What was not mentioned - maybe it was elsewhere - is that Bill was often a prick to the media, known for giving one word or short mumbled answers during press Q/As.

I'm not a fan of him or the Patriots (nor of the media) but the snub seems pretty ridiculous.

It’s quite possible that one of the inductees that was elected over Bill Belichick is Patriots owner Robert Kraft. If so, that sets up the possibility of Kraft in 2026, Belichick in 2027, and Brady in 2028. That would be a fitting way to honor the dynasty.

Right.
My unfounded take as a 60-year Patriots fan is that Polian engineered this as a "favor" to his buddy Kraft so that Kraft and Belichick don't go in together, and Kraft gets there first. (Don't believe Kraft's public statements--if you watched the Kraft-funded Netflix series on the Pats, you will get some small sense of how much they despise each other, and how much Kraft wants public acclaim).
Belichick is truly an asshole to reporters, so it doesn't seem to be too big a stretch to think that a bunch of them would be receptive to making Belichick "wait a year."

All HOFs are popularity contests. One's failure to be elected in, to not be elected in, or to not be elected in one's first year of eligibility but then be elected later, does not in any way, shape, or form elevate or diminish what one did. HOF status only really matters to the uninformed or obsessed.

All that said, if Pujols isn't unanimously elected to the baseball HOF in his first year of eligibility, I'll be outraged and you'll never be able to convince me that the voter(s) who didn't vote for Pujols was just some NY sportswriter(s) wanting to protect Rivera's status as the only unanimous selection.

I always loved the videos where someone would go out and ask people on the street what Hillary has ever accomplished, then the same thing with Harris. Crickets. They also belong in The Hall of Injustice, but in a special section for those who never deserved the fame they got. Why do Democrats end up with such unqualified people so often. More infuriating is that they vote for them in large numbers. It's some kind of mental quirk.

Saint Croix said...

The other possibility is that he's not a really good coach. UNC is ransoming undergrads and the faculty lounge to pay his salary, and UNC football is worse than ever.

It makes people suspect that he was riding on the Tom Brady express. Cynical people might suggest that any twit could win a lot of games, if Tom Brady was your quarterback. I would be a genius, for instance.

Finally, what's really funny about the Hall of Fame (at least in baseball, this is true) is that the journalists who vote are mean as shit, and are often keeping out very talented people who deserve to be in. Meanwhile the "veterans committee," made up of old, boozy ballplayers, is constantly letting in every Tom, Dick and Harry who is way retired and often dead.

Journalists suck.

Baseball's vote is complicated by an explicit character clause in the voting rules, while there's no reason to imagine the sportswriters are competent to judge character. They should either eliminate the clause or have the Hall itself refuse to put unworthies on the ballot (which they'd never do).

She didn't get to be Vice-President, either! Who was the guy who discriminated against her?

Obama put Biden on his ticket because he wanted a white man on his ticket. He didn't trust the voters to elect a black man with a white woman as his veep. So he put the incompetent Biden in the #2 spot. And, to save face and public humiliation, he made Hillary his Secretary of State.

Then Obama told Biden not to run, and tried to install Hillary as his successor. Fail! And then Biden, following the Obama formula-for-success, put a black woman in the #2 spot. The one he picked, had almost zero support from Democrat voters, and it was an obvious DEI con job.

I still think the first female president will likely be a Republican, because feminism today is an ugly, divisive, and poisonous ideology, and Democrats can't seem to escape it.

The NFL HOF has a long history of punishing off the field behavior, and no one ever accused Bill Belichick of being a person of high moral character. At least one sportswriter said that he voted for the 3 players and not Kraft or Belichick for this reason.
Then there are people like Polian who can’t remember what he did (it turns out that he did vote for Belichick - that was confirmed this morning by the audit firm that counts the vote). Belichick's last three years with the Patriots and last year at UNC were marked by an apparent loss of the ability to engage the attention of and control his players. Lots of mental mistakes, penalties and disciplinary infractions, and lack of attention to details--which was the opposite of the previous two decades. I don't know whether Bill changed or the players changed.
