"The famous party slogan in 'Nineteen Eighty-Four' was 'Who controls the past controls the future; who controls the present controls the past.'"

"Orwell’s proposal that totalitarianism demands the rejection of objective truth and the alteration of the past is perhaps the most original idea in 'Nineteen Eighty-Four.'... 'The empirical method of thought, on which all the scientific achievements of the past were founded, is opposed to the most fundamental principles of Ingsoc [English socialism]. And even technological progress only happens when its products can in some way be used for the diminution of human liberty. In all the useful arts, the world is either standing still or going backwards.' And the very medium of thought, in Orwell’s reckoning, language, would be crippled. Winston’s co-worker, employed in the project, explains: 'Do you know that Newspeak is the only language in the world whose vocabulary gets smaller every year? … In the end we will make thoughtcrime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it.' What actually happened?... This logarithmic graph shows that in 1948, the Encyclopaedia Britannica was about 29,000 pages. Its final printed edition, in 2010, had 33,000. Today most of us rely on Wikipedia (despite its occasional errors and editing wars), which as of last year had the equivalent of 3.2 million Britannica pages, a hundredfold increase...."

A printed encyclopedia was set, Wikipedia gets changed as often as someone with an agenda can get in to do it.
I'm sorry I didn't look for an Encyclopedia back when the internet took off, the history in it was about as accurate as you were going to find for the time...but it wasn't going to be revised by someone with an agenda later. Can't say that about Wikipedia.

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

Wouldn't that be nice if it were true. Unfortunately every big issue the Leftists push requires unthinking belief in things that are not true. Each of us could easily list a dozen current issues that fit that description: expressed belief in objectively untrue things.

Bob Boyd said...

Sing me a lullaby, Pinker. That didn't just happen. We fought a 50 year cold war and numerous small, hot wars to make that happen.
We thought we won, remember? We thought people would learn. Now look at Europe. Look at academia. Look at "journalism". Look at US politics. Clearly the battle isn't over. It will never be over because freedom is that battle.

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

Pinker's example supports my thesis. Winston's coworker demonstrates the true believer Leftist excited about extending their power but also dead wrong in how it will turn out.

There are cameras everywhere, there are laws governing speech. Jury trials are being thrown out because juries won't convict on laws they see as unjust, the London Times and the Guardian now produce party propaganda non stop... "Don't worry people, it's not what it looks like."

"Wikipedia gets changed as often as someone with an agenda can get in to do it."

Wikipedia on any important topic is maintained by spooks and party operatives. News stories are modified, thrown into the memory hole.

Jaq said...

One thing he got wrong was that the tell screen would be carried around with you at all times, reporting your location and stuffing you with propaganda, recording your speech, just like the camera in your car watching that you are watching the road, of course access to it can be ordered by a judge, a judge who does whatever the Party tells him to do.

Oh, no, it's not like 1984 at all whatsoever.

Jaq said...

Of course social media has provided a counter to it, but look at Europe right now imposing a $130 million fine on X for refusing to censor speech speech in what we used to call "Free Europe."

April 4th, 1984. Last night to the flicks. All war films. One very good
one of a ship full of refugees being bombed somewhere in the Mediterranean.
Audience much amused by shots of a great huge fat man trying to swim away
with a helicopter after him, first you saw him wallowing along in the
water like a porpoise, then you saw him through the helicopters gunsights,
then he was full of holes and the sea round him turned pink and he sank as
suddenly as though the holes had let in the water, audience shouting with
laughter when he sank. then you saw a lifeboat full of children with a
helicopter hovering over it. there was a middle-aged woman might have been
a jewess sitting up in the bow with a little boy about three years old in
her arms. little boy screaming with fright and hiding his head between her
breasts as if he was trying to burrow right into her and the woman putting
her arms round him and comforting him although she was blue with fright
herself, all the time covering him up as much as possible as if she thought
her arms could keep the bullets off him. then the helicopter planted a 20
kilo bomb in among them terrific flash and the boat went all to matchwood.
then there was a wonderful shot of a child's arm going up up up right up
into the air a helicopter with a camera in its nose must have followed it
up and there was a lot of applause from the party seats but a woman down in
the prole part of the house suddenly started kicking up a fuss and shouting
they didnt oughter of showed it not in front of kids they didnt it aint
right not in front of kids it aint until the police turned her turned her
out i dont suppose anything happened to her nobody cares what the proles
say typical prole reaction they never----

🤷 Propaganda makes people such stupid fucking savages.

I think the second issue Pinker identifies is a bigger deal than the first—that limiting your vocabulary limits your ability to think and that an idea can be made impossible by eliminating the words used to describe it.

There is a replication crisis in peer-reviewed literature, climate science in particular has always been marbled with bullshit. This doesn't mean it's nothing but lies--that would be hard to achieve--odds and ends of facts add credibility. Once the dogma is accepted, it is reduced to simple minded advertising: "carbon credits." What is true about Covid is that virologists were trying to figure out how to cause a pandemic, and they probably succeeded. Something about it was probably an accident: they almost certainly didn't plan to kill so many people. They can't admit much of this, so they lie and cover up. Maintain the pretence that creating a somewhat artificial bug will help in predicting and preventing natural pandemics. And yes, this has been funded for military purposes.

And honestly, I would not use the expansion of words used by Wikipedia as a guide for anything. Does it include multiple new pronouns? And every possible idiom of urban speak that can be squeezed into that format? Please. I'd rather point to the demolition and/or removal of historic statues here in the US during the Biden years- erasing history ala the Taliban and ISIS. With government approval. In the novel 1984, the mythical London Times (controlled by the party) would be making the same argument. Hey, we have more info available then ever. Count the books. Count the newspaper pages.

AI is all about control. Google crippling its own search engine is all about control. "The Party" which today is just the financial elite which controls the press, the internet, and book publishing, always hated the internet. Antisemitism, racism, homophobia, aka anything they didn't like.

Look at the brits putting people in jail for tweets. Look at the EU Fining musk 120 million Euros because he doesn't censor enough. In the USA they have to be more clever. But they're centralizing and shutting off the free flow of information.

The ideal is to go back to the old days. Top down information flow. 3 networks. A few Big NYC publishers. 20 top magazines. A handful in NYC and LA controlling everything. And people just accepting it. They decide. You consume.

Furthermore, it’s easier to find someone/something to confirm our own distorted biases.

If we look at the increase (sic) in language, it’s doesn’t appear to be a language, but more of documentation of trendy slang - in an effort to remain relevant, as well as a distortion of existing language.

Although without the internet none of us would know about it.

Pinker is an ass. Take a long sheet of paper with 2 columns. On the left, list the attributes of modern society that conform with 1984, on the right, list those that don't. The list on the left will be far longer; we have more similarities than differences. You can test this by marking those items on the right that have been under assault, or legal attack, or activist attack, because these are next.

We have people being arrested for their Mean Tweets and thrown in jail, we have political candidates being prosecuted in order to get them off the ballot. Pinker wants us to think we have made good progress because the state-controlled, institutional brainwashing hasn't started yet. They
re saving the rats for last - that's progress.

Yeah, I bet there was nobody else in the USA, who could write a column other than Susan Pinker.

I read an article last month where a teachers’ union official was excited about not teaching facts. She envisioned people not having to know things but just looking them up online. Given the edits (always in one direction, apparently) on sources like Wikipedia and AI’s “hallucinations” (AKA lies), Orwell’s Ministry of Truth would completely agree with this idea. Those who control online content get to control “the truth”.

Intelligence and stupidity are not necessarily antonyms. Sometimes the first is needed for the second. Some very smart people have said some very stupid things. And what Pinker has written in this case is absurdly wrong.

One of Pinker's big ideas is that the world has gotten safer and more peaceful over time. After the horrors of the 20th century, sure. But is the diminution of violence a straight line progression or long periods of relative peace interrupted by spasms of horrendous carnage?

We can argue over Orwell was a prophet, but he was also depicting extreme cases (and horrors from the recent past) to make a powerful impression on people. You can say, hey today's world isn't that bad, or you can look at the ways in which our world has become or could become more like Orwell's novel. In that sense, he's still a prophet.
