Said NY Governor Kathy Hochul, quoted in
"Hochul slams brakes on Zohran Mamdani’s free NYC bus plan: ‘Takes money out of a system that relies on fares'" (NY Post).
The cautious bus route outlined by Hochul is the latest split the moderate Democratic governor has had with Mamdani, a Democratic socialist, since she endorsed him in September.... [B]ut she has balked at much of his actual agenda — notably, taxing the rich to pay for $10 billion in freebies such as no-cost child care and buses without fares.
The governor’s guarded approach could spell problems for Mamdani, as his grand plans largely require support from both Hochul and lawmakers in Albany....
Mamdani’s supporters have taken notice of Hochul’s hesitancy and twice recently chanted “Tax the rich”at her, clearly irking the governor. “The more you push me, the more I’m not going to do what you want,” Hochul told a SOMOS crowd....

No Kings. Or Queens, as it were.
What is SOMOS? In Argentina, it's a democratic socialist-feminist party. What is it in NYC?
The dude promised free stuff. And the chumps went to his victory party expecting free stuff--and got charged $13 for a beer!
"and got charged $13 for a beer!"
You can get beer for less than a dollar a can at the market here. Where did the other 12 bucks go?
LOL. Now that he pushed himself into the mayor's office; they are going to try and moderate him. Not even a full week honeymoon.
Anyone else enjoying the popcorn?
NYC already has free subways, for those nimble enough to jump the turnstiles.
Does mean the end of the traditionally friendly relationship between New York City's mayor and the governor of New York State?
Blue on Blue! I hope for massive casualties on all sides!
Clearly, all the red states need to round up and send all their homeless, their illegals, their mentally ill, and others that Democrats love to NYC.... after all, everything will be given to these people "for free!" Much, much better deal than what, say, Utah or Mississippi can afford.
Right?
“The more you push me, the more I’m not going to do what you want.” Famous last words before giving in.
Zandami - "If that rich mean old Governor hadn't of stopped me I could have made NYC a worker's paradise."
I think he's smart enough to know he would have plenty of excuses.
Come the Revolution, Hochul's words will come back to haunt her. This is why the liberal Mensheviks were first to go under Lenin. When useful idiots are no longer useful.
We've got free bus rides here in Missoula. I think it was just a ploy to get people to use the damn things. I've ridden him a couple times.
I begin to suspect that the Democrats are supporting the Mamdanis so that the Hochuls, Sherrills, and Spanbergers can paint themselves as "moderates."
SOMOS is apparently a Puerto Rican group, but the way things are in NYC it might just be a misspelling of "Soros."
"things that won't work" I like that tag. Particularly when it is applied to screwball government schemes.
If the D NY Governor wants to die on the hill of "no bus fares for Americans and more illegals" go for it! The NY state budget is 254,000 million per year. Raising an extra 100 million would require a .0004 raise in the budget.
I have the feeling the D Governor loves three things, rich people, Israel and Donors donating big money to her.
Usually you keep the bus fare to a nominal amount so you keep bums and weirdos from just living on the bus. Single bus ride in NYC is 3 dollars. Just cut it to $1.
It appears that the money to run the bus system comes from federal, state and local sources. Unless those sources are donations, for anyone paying federal, state or local taxes, rides are not really free.
What's really funny is that the $13 beer was PBR. You know, the blue collar working man's tipple so beloved of hipsters. I used to buy it in college when it was on sale at Walgreens. $2.99/12 pack was the price that would get me on my bike.
What Mandingo really needs to do is to clean up the subway so people will ride more. But that would mean cutting down o crime and increasing the Police. Something Mandingo like all commies doesn't like to do.
Maybe you shouldnt have endorsed him in the first place
"That's OK, Kathy, we can primary you, too."
I won a billion trillion dollar bet with Grok that King Mamdani couldn’t and wouldn’t keep his promises of free stuff to the masses. I made Grok calculate the cost of each program, which of course was massive, then had Grok evaluate what Mamdani jokingly called his means of funding them, which ranged from ridiculous to hilarious.
Grok cried uncle and awarded me the win. Unfortunately I’m getting paid in Mamdani Bucks, which are as worthless as his promises.
We have a side bet going that that Mamdani’s Minions will ignore the fact that he failed on every front, then blame Trump.
I expect to win that one too.
Who knows, maybe Mamdani will just run for Hochul's office next year.
Like I wrote the other day, Mamdani isn't going to get any of his free stuff enacted- as crazy as the Dems in Albany are, they aren't yet that crazy. If Mamdani wants to enact this stuff he will need to be in the governor's mansion, not Gracie.
Different color monopoly bills
The governor’s guarded approach could spell problems for Mamdani, as his grand plans largely require support from both Hochul and lawmakers in Albany....
So the socialist was making promises that he couldn't pay for out of NYC taxes, and instead needs an outside entity to fund?
Suckers.

Basically, taxation without representation for all of us who are paying for this crap but don't live in NYC.
so, just to be clear.
NO free subways..
NO free groceries..
NO free beer!
But, i'm SURE that Everyone that voted for him is Still GLAD!
because.. He's NOT TRUMP
right?
Not higher taxes on the rich, higher wages for the working poor instead.
Basically, taxation without representation for all of us who are paying for this crap but don't live in NYC.
OOOh! Boo Hoo! How much Federal tax money goes to building roads through sparsely populated areas out west (not to mention water projects, cheap grazing on federal land, etc.).
Not higher taxes on the rich, higher wages for the working poor instead.
I think you are new here. But if you stick around you will find most of the regulars adamantly oppose raising the minimum wage.
Doesn't have to fulfill promises to be successful, simply needs media help blaming republicans, the rich, white men, and/or non socialist politicians
Yes he will continue to wreck the city
"What's really funny is that the $13 beer was PBR."
If only. It was actually Bud Light, with Dylan Mulvaney on the can.
A Bud Light doesn't cost $13, even in NYC. Where did all the money that didn't pay for beer go?
It is hilarious that the Mamdani supporters at the gala expected Mamdani to provide free stuff on his own dime.
You cant fix stupid
Narciso at 5:30 PM--Zing!
She can't cause him problems with his ultimate goal. He's already elected. It was his desire to be elected that drove him to make wild promises, and he got it, so he'll be okay with The Gov.
New Yorkers will get nothing they voted for and a lot of what they avoided thinking about to do it.
I think you are new here. But if you stick around you will find most of the regulars adamantly oppose raising the minimum wage.
The minimum wage takes the "working" out of working poor. But there are lots more "poor" so it balances out, or something.
Those robots will appreciate the $30.00 minimum wage
Unlimited availability and accessibility, not even on trees.
How much Federal tax money goes to building roads through sparsely populated areas out west (not to mention water projects, cheap grazing on federal land, etc.).
You think all the cattle grazing out in flyover country are eaten by the people living there? No, they are trucked to big cities and served to ungrateful left-wing assholes who tap out flowery words on a keyboard for a living, and think meat pops out of a Star Trek replicator already shrink-wrapped.
Trucked over roads. Roads in sparsely populated areas, that is. Imagine that.
Just like the grain and vegetables that are irrigated by various water projects, and shipped to the same ungrateful left-wing big-city assholes who don't know which end of a shovel turns dirt.
I think you are new here. But if you stick around you will find most of the regulars adamantly oppose raising the minimum wage.
I don't give a shit about the minimum wage. There is only one true minimum wage and that is $0 per hour.
People whose work output per hour does not add at least the same amount of market value per hour to their employer's products will always lose their jobs in the end. They'll be fired and replaced with a more efficient worker, or replaced with a robot, or the employer will go out of business. This ineluctable arithmetic certainty always hits the young, the elderly, the poorly educated, the disabled, the marginalized, and those with limited English skills the hardest.
As always, Democrat policies make things worse for those they pretend to be helping.
As always, the people who believe Democrat lies and vote for higher minimum wages are the most stupid among us, and will therefore be the first ones to be harmed.
I love the dumb Milton Friedman- tired ol boomer nonsense in this comment section. "Why that's socialism, boy! There's no free lunch". "Mandingo sure is a sucker".
I just showed you the numbers. giving people free bus fares in NYC isn't going to "bust the budget". In any case, that's irrelevant. People had two choices, vote for someone who would try to increase affordability and income equality. And a guy who wasn't going to do jack shit to help the poor and working class. So they chose Mandingo. Correctly.
Good God, its not like Cuomo was some sort of fucking conservative.
They misspelled Soma.
We will see yet again the argument that Socialism/Communism would have worked (this time) if only it had been really tried.
Boatbuilder at 6:54 PM--Bing!
"Raising an extra 100 million would require a .0004 raise in the budget."
Bus and transit fares in NYC were projected in the MTA budget to bring in almost $4 billion, with a "b". That is the number that needs to be made up to give out free fares- not 100 million.

Not much. Those are county roads. You know the subdivision you live in? The developer built those roads.
Just raise city taxes by $4 billion. Problem solved.

The federal government shouldn't own grazing land nor regulate it. If the land isn't part of the Federal District or used "for the Erection of Forts, Magazines, Arsenals, dock-Yards, and other needful Buildings", the federal government shouldn't own it, period, if the land is in a state.
"Four federal agencies—the U.S. National Park Service (NPS), U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), and U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) within the U.S. Department of the Interior, and the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) in the U.S. Department of Agriculture—oversee roughly 95 percent, or 608 to 610 million acres, of federal land.[1][2]
From Ballotpedia:
"Alaska had the most federal land (222.7 million acres) while Nevada had the greatest percentage of federal land within a state (80.1 percent).
Connecticut and Iowa tied for the lowest percentage of federal land at 0.3 percent each."
Alaska and Nevada should own almost all that land, which could then be sold to private interests- AND TAXED. And become productive. Another figure: "Approximately 92% to 94% of Maine's forest land is privately owned." That forested land is logged, and turned into lumber and paper. And turns a profit. And the forest is healthy and thriving- and managed. When was the last time you heard of a major fire out of control burning down Maine's privately owned forest lands? Contrast that to California and government owned and managed forests.
As for roads- building post roads is actually in the Constitution as a federal government function. And just a simple question- how do you build a coast to coast or border to border road in the USA without going through sparely populated lands? You can't. Heck, you can't even build a road through NY or NJ without going through sparsely populated areas. I drove through the Pine Barrens for the first time on my last trip to NJ- and there's a reason they're referred to as Barrens.
And the federal highway system is much smaller then most people know. I'm most familiar with NY. The NYS Thruway system is designated as part of the interstate system- but is funded almost entirely by tolls, and was built with NYS funding. Wikipedia list of federal highways in NY-https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._Routes_in_New_York The newest constructed- 1939. US routes are maintained by NY, not the feds.
All the roads constructed by the feds, and the states, and local governments benefit cities since that's how food and other goods travel. Mass transit in cities benefits city denizens and tourists, benefits us out in the hinterlands not at all.
Gospace, you have to wonder if Freder thinks Republicans pushed the Infrastructure Improvement Act that gave out billions for rural jobs yet seemingly produced nothing. Progressives claim to care about the poor and rural while they are fleecing their pockets for the connected few. It works because you are right, that is the purpose of the federal government. It just isn’t what Freder wants it to be.

Towards a teachable moment about what “free” government programs really cost.

I agree with your post, but a minor correction in bold.
"The governor’s guarded approach..." I think that's called "The Law."
"...require support from both Hochul and lawmakers in Albany." I think that's called "Conspiracy."
Hochul is an accidental govenor and what passes as a moderate in New York. Sadly, in New York, she is the past and Mamdani is the future.
Dosen’t mamdami know that only rich white people pay fares anyway? Why does he want to help them?
