"The San Franciscan has never lived a day outside of California, presents younger than 58 because of his hair and genes..."

"... and has endeared himself to his party rank-and-file by criticizing Democratic leaders for not fighting harder before leading by example to confront Donald Trump.... Newsom is also the best-positioned Democrat according to the new rules of politics — namely, whether you are or can become famous by breaking through on social media. Ask yourself: How many other potential candidates are plausible celebrities who can transcend the political-pop culture divide a la Obama and Trump?..."

At one point, Martin observes, "Newsom sounded like he was reading the stage directions, a la Bush 41, saying: 'Message, I care.'" He said: "You’ve got to be on the other side of caution. It’s just clarity, conviction. Finding your voice, being your authentic self, just letting it rip, and taking the shit along the way."

I was surprised to read "presents younger than 58 because of his hair and genes" — I thought it was politically incorrect to mention genes.

AND: I'm reminded of the old theory that the man with the best hair wins. Remember this one:
"We've got better vision. We've got better ideas. We've got real plans. We've got a better sense of what's happening to America. And we've got better hair. I'll tell you, that goes a long way."

The link goes to an old post of mine. You'll see the person who said "we've got better hair" went on to lose, and you'll see my contemporaneous statement that it was not good hair and that the only good hair was on the person who actually did win.

Odd that even a hack like Martin could praise Newsom’s social media team when they are actually internet famous for being so lame in trying to emulate Trump, and have been caught spreading misinformation and strange memes celebrating death and attacks on conservatives. The media strategy so far is more tone-deaf than any comms from any legitimate candidate in my lifetime. Only a fucking loser Leftist like Gavin (who has lost every legal battle vs Trump) could be continually buoyed by the prog tongue-bath specialists at Politico, the blog for cult lefties

Of course Newsom is popular with rich leftists who vote in the Dem primary, but he isn't popular with most voters. He is exactly the kind of person that voters are sick of - rich, entitled, performative, wrong on the issues regular people care about. He main benefit is that he is better than the parade of losers who may also be candidates in 2028.

Like every good commie Gavin had an 8-year Plan to End Homelessness in San Fran when he was sworn in late in the twentieth century and here we are closing out the first quarter of the 21st century and like every communist multi-year plan Gavin’s has been forgotten by all the right people and of course never did what it claimed.

It was a smashing success though, for it did get him elected Mayor of shitville.

They persist in not getting it: "the new rules of politics — namely, whether you are or can become famous by breaking through on social media" is not why we got Trump. (And to whoever pointed out that Newsom's social media team is a joke up thread - I see it exactly the same way. They're exactly like Bush's "Message: I care" - cargo cultists building that wooden model of the airplane.)

They keep looking for the secret sauce. Why? Why don't they understand that thinking for oneself and speaking one's mind are not scripted or focus-grouped, and that if the best you can do to fake it is profanity and belligerence, it only gets clearer that you have no ideas and no plans? They're in charge of Hollywood - shouldn't they understand that, if only a handful of actors every year deserve an Oscar for their ability to make us believe that they are the characters they play, the chances of a politician doing it successfully are miniscule?

I'm not going to say he won't win, although as I keep telling my husband the Californian, I think some Democrats are underestimating how much a lot of the rest of the country loathes Californians, especially the obliviously bossy ones. But it won't be because Newsom is a wunderkind of some New Politics. It'll be because there are a lot of Democrats who voted for Biden despite its being obvious during the 2016 campaign that he was steeply declining: blue or die.

Newsom is someone with the guts to throw Trump’s shtick right back at him. The Democrats tried the “high road” and it flopped. You can’t out-dignify a playground bully and you sure can’t out-reason his MAGA cult. Nor could the Republicans. They gave in to this cancer and it ate them alive.

The Trump base will never like anybody with half a spine, so the only real option is to mock them relentlessly and make sure they learn to respect what they’ll never embrace. Newsom gets at least the first part: he’s giving disillusioned Democrats a reason to cheer and showing the spectacle-hungry middle that he can beat Trump at his own show.

California is a super-state. It’s full of ubersmart and motivated people many of who work to make the state even better as an avocation. It’s a scientific leader that has brought incredibly forward thinking management of resources and people to the state and the country. It has hands down the best unified college/university system in the world and this serves to help keep its people upwardly mobile and the economy buzzing. It faces problems head on and doesn’t give up with setbacks. And Newsom was there managing and balancing almost 40,000,000 people. There is no other place in the US like it. Certainly a contrast to the sinister and pathetic mafia show in Washington.

The guts?! Exactly what "guts" does it take to mock Trump? College girls who tip the scales at 95 pounds do it constantly. What "guts" does it take to oppose Trump? The worst thing he ever does to his opposition is call them names - if being called names without melting is your standard for courage, get your T checked, because I might have more than you and I'm a post-menopausal woman.

The Democrats tried the “high road” and it flopped.

Hahahahaha, when was it that Democrats actually tried the high road rather than just saying they were taking it? The endless repetition of "Hitler," "fascists," "Nazis," "white supremacism," "racism" "misogyny," "pedophile," "cult," "billionaires," "dictator," "puppet"... whatever high-negative-connotation term your side thinks they could make stick to Trump or anyone who supports him, in every media outlet, every press release, every social media post - the vast majority of which they still control. The secret investigations. The spurious lawsuits. The invented crimes to justify criminal prosecution. The malicious compliance from entrenched government functionaries. The deliberate punishment of working class and impoverished Americans. The constant, dripping disdain. This has been the "high road"?

California is a super-state, in the same way that Britain at the start of the 20th century was a super-empire, though for different reasons. It is resource-rich, has ideal weather in certain areas, and has attracted a lot of smart, ambitious, creative people over the decades, first because of its physical advantages and then by gravitational pull.

But do you live here? Because I did, and I'm in California now, and my entire family, my husband's entire family, and many of our college friends still do live here, and I have some ground truth to report: in this super-state, Bogle Winery was able to buy some damn fine grapes this year because the wine market is collapsing for Napa growers. My college-age relatives have no plans to move out of their parents' houses because of the expense - and in some cases, because of the culture of safetyism to which they and their parents have fallen prey. Lunch at Carl's Jr. for three costs $50 - and that predates the dreaded tariffs. Gas is double what I pay in Texas. The roads of the capital might as well be unpaved. No houses are being built n the city limits. No apartments are being built in the city limits. Giant piles of trash, the size of a city bus, are a common sight on ordinary streets. On my morning walks through what used to be a middle class and must now, on the basis of home prices, be an upper middle class neighborhood, I regularly encounter people living in their cars.

Britain became the fragile shell of itself that it now is first through war and then through its own willful errors. California has been spared the war losses but man are they committed to willful erring.

Free and fair elections would work. But the Supreme Court has been against free and fair elections for a generation. The Supreme Court is also against any Congressionally passed law that constrains presidential authority in any way. Goodbye Posse Comitatus law; hello ICE. The Venezuelans are a preview, not a sideshow.

When constitutionally sanctioned avenues for changing power are blocked, then the political power moves to the streets and revolution. The voter repression on election day next November will be relitigated starting the following day with a counter-revolution because democratic politics will have demonstrated its failure.

The 8 Democratic senators who caved have proved that Washington no longer works and that the reactionary autocracy now fundamentally allocates the resources, wealth, and income of the country. Washington only works for the superrich.

Newsom will be considered far right by the time 2028 rolls around, so he might have a chance. My guess is that the Democrats will pick someone more radical, but I have no idea who. Name recognition might be the deciding factor.

Hm. By “caving,” they put an end to an extraconstitutional filibuster. Thus stopping another mini-coup against the constitution, as all filibusters are. And they got a bill passed, which would seem to be squarely within the parameters of a working Washington. CC, JSM

California is just fine if you happen to be a billionaire. There is a superstition that billionaires tend to be Republicans, like the little Monopoly man with the top hat and the dollar sign on his vest. The exception must be the California billionaires who own the place, otherwise it wouldn't be a Democrat one-party state.

If these two predictions do come to pass, I would be watching Kentucky's nepo baby governor, Andy Beshear.

"Mass exodus of business and wealthy people OUT of the state."

And there are still plenty of zillions who live in Calf - go look it up. Are you wealthy? If not, why the fuck do you care where rich people live? They sure as hell don't care about you.

Calf is terrible for average people. Its pretty Goddamn nice for rich people. And its nice for illegals and poor people. Its terrible for everyone else.

The Rich run the state Government. And they make sure it stays nice for rich people.

RCOCEAN II said...

The white middle class and American small businesses have been moving out of Calf for 35 years. And guess what, the power elite in Calf, do..not..care. They've imported high-tech workers and rich people for overseas. And people have set up small businesses to cater to the immigrants. Legal and illegal.

Conservatives never want to fight, just run away. And then they want to believe "Well, we left. We showed them. Where's your great state, now liberals? Huh,huh?" And liberal/Leftists just laugh and say "We're doing just fine"

As I mentioned several times before, the most objective measures of US state governance are electric power rates. There are absolutely no valid, circumstantial (non political/bureaucratic) reasons to have significantly higher rates in the lower 48. California has no reason to be charging over 2X as much as Arizone Nevada or Oregon.
https://www.eia.gov/electricity/monthly/epm_table_grapher.php?t=epmt_5_6_a

Newsom is a creature of San Francisco/Sacramento, and the power rates come from there. A politician is no better than his milieu, and the CA political/governance milieu is indescribably awful. Newsom and his coterie will be a disaster.

CA has survived so far on the tremendous gifts of nature and generation of social and physical capital accumulated by better people. The current lot are drawing on and depleting this fund.

buwaya said...

Note that Nevada Arizona and Oregon are mostly Democratic, at least recently. This criticism of mine is thus not (entirely) partisan. There is something "special" about California in an objective sense.

That’s also Victor Davis Hanson’s take.

New England, New York and New Jersey are horribly run too, but not quite as badly as California.

Jim at said...

Oh, I hope he runs. The ads write themselves. "Six weeks to flatten the curve." French Laundry noshing while beaches, schools, and churches are closed, barkeeps arrested for defying orders, corrupt associates, CO2-belching wildfires (soon to be followed by floods and mud)... the beat goes on.

It won't matter. In case you didn't notice, the left just elected a guy who openly admitted he wants to kill his political opponents. And their children.

Gavin's 'accomplishments' are nothing in comparison.

buwaya said...

Oh, btw, you Americans should get on persecution and extermination of every anti-nuke campaigner that has ever been. No justice, no peace (and no nukes, due to perceptions of political risk). A lookback period of forty years will probably be necessary.

buwaya said...

Talk is one thing, but power plants and pipelines and power grids are real. Death threats from some useless SOB in VA amount to just words. CA problems are real.

Maybe it's a stretch to blame "The Democrats" as a group for the 2 failed and 2 successful political assassination attempts since last summer, but given the way they are always squawking about "stochastic terrorism", doesn't their constant torrent of venom and hatred certainly fit their own professed standards as a contributing factor?

Even more disturbing was the Left's widespread jubilation after the fact when Charlie Kirk and Brian Thompson were assassinated, and the even more widespread anguish when both of Trump's would-be assassins failed.

These were not just basement-dwelling nobodies spewing bile on the internet, either. I cut off all contact with a woman I had counted as a good friend for thirty years, an accomplished professional from a prominent family, after she VERY publicly lamented the fact that the kid on the roof had not killed Trump.

It's clear to me now that at least half of today's Democrats would be happy to see anyone killed who stood in the way of their crazed lust for power. We can't possibly share the same flag and territory with such depraved, dangerous, evil people. It is folly to go on considering them as fellow Americans. They are our worst enemies now.

Trump needs to use every tool that government power can offer to utterly destroy the Left's political influence and drive as many of them outside our borders as possible. If we fail, they will kill us all. Everything we do must be with that in mind. This is war.

Of the failed assassination attempt on Trump in Butler, which did you see more of from Democrats- sadness because of the attempt or sadness because it was not successful?

Of the successful assassination of Charlie Kirk, which did you see more of from Democrats- sadness because of the attempt or happiness because it was successful?

It's funny that you draw an allusion between Gavin and that prick John Kerry. They are both consummate narcissists, ex-tempo self-aggrandizing masters. But Kerry is the smarter one, he's the guy that knows the big money and graft comes from world government, not a state. And he knows how to pick his vulnerable widows, let's face it.

What did Lancey say to the Cincinnati Kid? ..."Like life, I guess. You're good, kid, but as long as I'm around you're second best. You might as well learn to live with it...."

The only person more ridiculous and corrupt than Newsom is Jack Schlossberg. They'd make a fabulous ticket. I highly encourage the DNC overlords to push these insane hairy airheads on their constituency.

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

Following on Tina’s insightful comments, which on a quick read appear to be the only reference to Gavin’s festering corruption issues. He has been under investigation for corruption for three years and just last week his top adviser was arrested after three other targets on Newsom’s team pled guilty and agreed to cooperate. The aid arrested last week had refused to assist Garland’s DOJ when informed her boss was under investigation by the FBI. She also stole $250K from Newsom’s campaign funds.

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

So yeah let’s cheer him on like the braindead staff of the Politico.
