I think Trump can replace Obamacare with a Medicare buy in and universal catastrophic insurance (above $ 50,000). I think he can do this with a 5% VAT.

So there is an old stone fort, it's for sale, you can buy it, on the border with Quebec in New York State, and it's called "Fort Montgomery" It was started soon after the War of 1812, and never completed because advances in artillery obsoleted the design. But anyway, what I thought was funny was that I was watching that show The American Revolution, and it turns out that General Montgomery led a raid on Montreal for the Continental Army. I think it's funny that the US would name a fort not that many miles from Montreal for a general who had attacked Montreal.

I find this depressing:
Marjorie Taylor Greene was elected to Congress with a net worth of about $700,000. Five years later, her net worth now exceeds $20–25 million. She is resigning from Congress just two days after reaching the five-year mark that makes her eligible for a lifetime congressional pension and other benefits.
With her recent public break from Trump, she’s virtually guaranteed a lucrative TV or media gig.
And she’s supposed to be one of the “good guys.”

Her wealth comes from her family's commercial construction business, investments, and royalties from her book.
Source of wealth
Taylor Commercial, Inc.: Greene holds a 51% majority stake in her family's commercial construction company. Financial disclosures have valued the company between $5 million and $25 million.
Investments: Her assets include publicly traded stocks, bank accounts, and real estate. She has executed hundreds of stock trades since joining Congress.
Book Royalties: Royalties from her 2023 memoir brought in $178,000 in 2024.
Congressional Salary: As a member of Congress, she earns a base salary of $174,000, which is a small portion of her overall portfolio.
Scrutiny and disputes
Insider Trading Allegations: Greene has faced questions about the timing of some of her stock trades, including purchases made shortly before a market rally prompted by a Trump tariff announcement.
Disputed Wealth Claims: Greene has disputed reports about her wealth increase, stating that she made her money before entering public life and that her wealth "has not in any way come from politics".
Financial Disclosure Issues: Forbes reported in August 2025 that Greene filed her 2024 financial disclosure without mentioning her book agreement with the publisher, which may violate federal rules.

Fort Montgomery has been on sale for years.

I imagine for years because it's remote from transportation, cold, flat, and likely has all kinds of historic building restrictions.

And:
Under FERS, a former member with five years of service can begin receiving a full deferred pension at the age of 62. Greene is currently 51 (as of November 2025), so she will have to wait until she reaches the eligible age to start receiving the annuity.

Resignation vs. Expulsion: Resignation does not impact pension eligibility, provided the member has met the vesting requirements.
Her annual pension amount, calculated based on a formula using her years of service and the average of her highest three years of salary (approximately $174,000 per year for a representative), is estimated to be around $8,700 annually when she becomes eligible at age 62. "

Only reason I looked it up is because another commenter said it first.

Personally, No problem with pension but net worth kinda iffy.

I was interested but concerned about legality of pressure washing and painting. Wanted to go gloss black, basecoat clearcoat. Look like a mirror.

I seriously doubt that MTG was in Congress long enough to significantly increase her wealth. I think it's much more likely that her wealth bio is flawed, which isn't all that unusual. There are plenty of longer-lived Republicans that have made a killing on the markets thanks to insider information. Unusual Whales is the one to go to for this. Pelosi falls in the top third, but she has plenty of red and blue company, and some serious competition when it comes to results.

This could stop the bleeding.

But the Senate will not let him do that. There are too many Republicans that are owned by the insurance companies.

For some reason a lot of Norm MacDonald videos are now making it to youtube. Thank God. What a comic genius. His interactions with Dennis Miller are comic gold. Another funny guy, Gilbert Gottfried. And the old reliable Rodney Dangerfied.

And its great to see Bob newhart or Don Rickles in their prime.

Congressional pensions used to be more generous. Sometime in the 90s, they stopped retirees from taking leftover campaign funds, which prompted a bunch of retirements before it took effect.

This is a little overdone. Greene was rich before joining congress. Her business is worth a lot. This did not stop her from insider trading though.

Greene has sold out multiple times after getting elected. She really has no principles and thinks she is more important than she is.

She wanted to be a senator or governor and there was no chance for her to win in Georgia. She under performed Trump by over 10 points in a very safe Republican district.

Her biggest transgression was supporting McCarthy.

Even the people in the hardcore MAGA camp are glad she is gone even though they agreed with a lot of her criticisms of Trump.

Also took a look this week at SNL season 10. This is one where martin short, Jim Belushi, Harry Shearer, billy crystal, and Christopher Guest were hired with 1 year contracts. Only 17 episodes due to writers strike.

Some good stuff, especially by martin short. Harry Shearer quit after 10 episodes. He sorta reminds me of Harlan Ellison. A little man, reputed to be some sort of "genius" who was always complaining everyone didn't understand the greatness of his work and shortchanged him.

In Ellison's case, he made a career out of "City on the edge of forever" and complaining Roddenberry "ruined" his great script. In the case of Shearer, he's still complaining about Lorne Michaels and Dick Ebbersol (sic) not putting more Harry Shearer on SNL.

RCOCEAN II said...

Strangely, Lorne Michaels was still angling to come back for SNL Season 6, even though radner, murray, and everyone else except Harry Shearer and Garrett Morris were leaving. Shearer tried to convince the new producer to keep him on SNL and implement his "New ideas" but she said "No, thanks".

The 1975-2000 time period was a great time for comedy. We probably didnt appreciate it at the time.

Ocean: don't forget Johnny Carson. Lots of his episodes on YouTube. You get not only him but so many of the other people you mention. There's a 24/7 streaming Carson channel - I get it on my Vizio smart TV, but it is probably available through other services. CC, JSM

PS: You do realize what Gottfried, Dangerfield, and Rickles have in common, don't you?

Yeah. They were sexual perverts. As was Sam Kinison.

Let me thank Althouse for pointing me to Marc Maron's podcast. Now, Maron is one fucked-up dude. But he's good at interviewing, and getting people to talk about their backgrounds and family.

Whats interesting is there's no "Template" for comics. You got guys like Leno, Letterman, Seinfeld or Larry David who are just middle-class dudes who got into comedy. Then you have a whole bunch who had something wrong with them. Kinison, Williams, Farley, Belushi, Rodney, Pryor, Winters, etc. Even guys like Spade and Carvy came from dysfunctional familes.

You throw in the old timey "Standup" nightclub atmosphere of drugs and booze and its no wonder many of these guys had problems. Its tragic that many of the guys with the most talent, had the most problems.

Jim gaffigan certainly is an exception. Never got to the bigtime but extremely funny.

This video is going viral right now.

Wine moms are declaring war on MAGA and they are not afraid to say that they are glad Charlie Kirk is dead.

It is really silly when people try to deny what the Democrat party is openly saying they are. Just like when the islamofascists tell you who they are we need to listen to them.

Democrats are a bunch of murderous drunk menopausal wine ladies and their simps.
