Early might be best timing as the energy that causes the northern lights hit mid day today.

Last night was the brightest I have ever seen them in WI. Had one pillar reaching up over our heads but just glorious pinks.

The May 9, 2024 one lit up for more of the sky, had more colors and phenomena I didn't see last night, but we're by far the best I have seen from my city driveway.

Just spent the day traveling, and at the airport this morning, I bought an egg burrito, and gak! it was made with powdered eggs! I know because we used to eat them as kids, the USDA kind, but after we rebelled, mom agreed to mix them half and half with real eggs. So I paid full price with an airport premium for the same crap they gave out to poor people before Food Stamps. Then I stopped at a diner on landing, and ordered a three egg omelette, to get the taste out of my mouth, and to share with my traveling companion, it cost $24 and if it was three eggs, it was three quail eggs, and maybe half a slice of cheese, and of the ingredients I selected, which all cost money, it seems like they were just waved by the omelette, like the vermouth in one of Hawkeye's martinis on M*A*S*H.

No wonder the penny is doomed, whatever the courts say.

Just finished reading A Day In The Life Of Ivan Denisovich about one man's day, from waking in the morning to going to sleep at night, in a Soviet work-prison for political prisoners. A great book, easy read, written with the straightforward prose of a Hemingway plus the workingman patois of a Celine, detailing the brutality and humanity in inhuman conditions.

White House signals it will cut tariffs to help ease high food prices ~ FT
'Officials indicate changes coming to levies on imported goods including coffee and bananas'

So tariffs are inflationary ...

This will crush the US coffee and banana industries, especially in Trump voting states like North Dakota.

Trump raises tariffs which drive prices up, then lowers tariffs to lower prices. Kind of like setting a house on fire, then rushing to put it out and expecting a reward. Isn't that what arsonists often do?

Trump administration holds Situation Room meeting over House effort to force release of all of DOJ’s Epstein files ~ CNN

Trump rushing Pam Bondi, Patel, Boebert and the rest of his team into the actual Situation Room to talk about the Epstein files is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard. Tip of the hat to whichever CNN reporter got that exclusive.

So, if you're Trump, what exactly do you say to Boebert when she asks why it's so important to you to hide the Epstein files from the public? Do you bother giving an explanation, or do you just skip straight to the threats?

Burchett attempted to do so using a procedure called “unanimous consent,” which would not have required lawmakers to go on the record in a roll call vote.”

"Chorus" is a program to pay influencers to post on social media, and one of the stipulations is that they must never admit to it. But the way I see it, if our trolls were genuinely interested in discussion, they would address the points being made against them, but, well...

If Trump is losing support from his base, it's for his war mongering and caving to the tech billionaires on H1-B visas, this kind of baseless smear campaign just reminds people why they voted for him in the first place.

Howard said...

Dave Smith was talking about the rapid evaporation of Trump's support from younger voters.

Yes, recent polling data from 2025 indicates that Donald Trump is significantly losing support from voters under 30, a demographic where he had made notable gains in the 2024 election.
Key findings from various polls include:
Approval Rating Collapse: His net approval rating among 18- to 29-year-olds has dropped sharply since he began his second term, with one YouGov/Yahoo poll showing a fall from a positive rating in January 2025 to -41 points by June 2025.
Largest Drop of Any Age Group: The decline in approval among young voters is more significant than in any other age demographic, a loss of more than 20 percentage points in some cases.
"Buyer's Remorse": The shift suggests "buyer's remorse" among young people who voted for him in 2024. The initial support was partly based on an appeal to a "vibe" or a sense that he was the "men's candidate," but this has faded due to current economic concerns and disappointment with his performance.
Key Issues: Dissatisfaction with the economy (inflation, cost of housing), job availability, and his handling of specific issues like the Jeffrey Epstein case and tariffs are major factors in the eroding support.
Gender and Race Shifts: While young men were a key part of his 2024 gains, their support has also declined. Young Black and Latino men, who showed increased support for Trump in 2024, are now more anti-Trump than they were then.
This trend indicates a significant challenge for Trump in maintaining the gains he made with younger voters during the 2024 election cycle.

Jaq said...

The reason that our Democrat friends don't attack Trump on war mongering, or on H1-B visas, is because they support the endless wars and kowtowing to the tech billionaires themselves, which just goes to show that Trump is the only choice.

Remember folks, Inga, Howard, Kak and the rest are all screaming about "Trump is guilty of Epstein!!!! This was known before the 2016 election, and every single Democrat including Inga swore it didn't matter then. We still needed to vote Hillary.

Fast forward. We still hear them screaming about Trump and Epstein... but when they watched videos of Joe Biden literally molesting underaged girls, groping them and fondling them... they told us it doesn't matter and we should vote for Joe the Groper. Remember Hunter's laptop, filled with pictures of the Biden family running around with naked ten year old girls and references to "Pedo Pete?"

Democrats like Inga didn't want us to know about Pedo Pete, and certainly didn't want us to not vote for Joe because he molests little kids. That was juuuuust fine with Inga and Kak and the rest. Maybe worth a "tsk tsk, Joe will be joe" but not vote for the child molestor? Inga would never, ever want that!

But now... oh boy, but now when they can claim that Trump is involved with Epstein, just trust them, please, and never ever look at the actual evidence, just take their word for it? We should impeach and execute Trump right now, no need for a trial!

If only Trump actually went on camera like their good buddy Joe Biden to molest children, then Democrats would be cheering instead of having the vapors.....

Simple people can’t understand complexity. Tariffs can force producers to lower profit margins to maintain business volume to compete with indigenous companies. I’ll dispense with the equations. This is how the US funded itself in the 18th century in cleaning up British mercantilism. Now we are working on Chinese mercantilism. We are also reducing the profit margins of US politicians who are paid by China to eliminate tariffs.

The thing is that there are perfectly good reasons to impose tariffs, and just because they increase prices at times, do we really want to get our TV cheaper at the cost of shutting down US factories, and leaving people who once enjoyed a decent standard of living doing gig work now?

Truman is supposed to have said that what he needed was a "one-handed economist" you know, one who never says "on the other hand." Well we have a lot of one-handed economic theorists here, and the money they count is denominated by one-sided coins.

That being said, Trump has imposed a lot of tariffs that don't seem at all aimed at shoring up US manufacturing, so Kak does understand the theory behind the tariffs, even if he refuses to acknowledge that.

The other place where our trolls count with one-sided coins is immigration, where there is a complete denial that they suppress wages in the working class, and that chasing lower prices through lower wages and sending jobs overseas is nothing but a race to the bottom. Then they can't understand why working people have abandoned the Democrats.

The Chinese are just sitting there with a massive labor pool, lax labor and environmental laws, and an order pad. It's our own fault if we are seduced by their cheap consumer goods.

Now we are upset that we no longer have the industrial base to fight modern war, which requires massive manufacturing of missiles and drones. Maybe China can't produce a premium quality anti-ship missile, for example, but as Stalin said, "sometimes quantity has a quality of its own."

I see our stupid as dirt Chicago treasurer has said that Chicago will sell all the t bills in its $10B account to protest Trump. That will generate some commissions that will result in some campaign donation kickbacks, and next year we will sadly read about how the money was unfortunately lost in investments in mysterious companies.

What I find amusing is the idea that Nancy Mace and Lauren Boebert will do whatever Trump tells them to.

“My great fear, of course, is that with the release of that information, which I think will be devastating for Trump, he’s going to do everything in his power to distract. What does that mean? I mean, he might take us to war with Venezuela just to get a distraction in the news and take it out of the headlines”.

I would venture to wager there aren't many, if any, trump Catholics hearing this up in here. Pick and Choose what they like about their religion and what they don't . U.S. Catholic Bishops Issue Rare Public Rebuke—Criticize Trump Administration’s Immigration Crackdown
U.S. Catholic bishops issued a statement Wednesday raising concerns about the Trump administration's ongoing crackdown and mass deportation of undocumented migrants, delivering a rare public rebuke of the President’s immigration policies.
The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) issued the rare “Special Message” during its annual gathering, which was held in Baltimore this year, saying they are disturbed about the “climate of fear and anxiety around questions of profiling and immigration enforcement.”
The statement received a near-unanimous approval from the conference, with 216 votes in favor, five against and three abstentions.
The bishops’ statement said they were “saddened by the state of contemporary debate and the vilification of immigrants.
The statement also raised concerns about the condition of migrant detention centers, “the lack of access to pastoral care,” and the arbitrary loss of legal status for some immigrants.
The bishops said they were “troubled by threats against the sanctity of houses of worship and the special nature of hospitals and schools.”
The statement said immigrants have made “enormous contributions to the well-being of our nation,” and the bishops feel “compelled now in this environment to raise our voices in defense of God-given human dignity.”
GOD-given human dignity? think that idea has become moot in todays environment, sorry Lord your people have backslid big time especially in todays politics. Every knee will bow in the end ,so that will be YOUR time..

Yeah Dinky, Latin Americans are simultaneously one of the strongest Catholic redoubts and one of the most precarious, since the Evangelicals are gaining more and more converts. The Bishops hope they can stanch the bleeding by coming out against deportation. But they are screwed whatever they do: some segment of their believers will dislike whatever position they take. CC, JSM

JSM as a recovering Catholic since 1965 ,now a born again Christian, an altar boy, and beat by Sisters of Charity, Franciscan nuns and Marist Brothers( the most sick) until I left the sect and went into military I saw so much abuse it was incredible. Very little Biblical back round over run by Catechism and rules made up and not biblical, I watched that sect for years ,LEO and Francis EVEN THOUGH I have seen Catholics up in here call those fellas commies ,to me seem to be more directed to the writings of scriptures although the lives don't always follow suit Religion.= James 1:27 I like " pure and faultless religion is caring for orphans and widows in their distress and keeping oneself unstained by the world. Tough ride! Like I said pik and choose what you like about your religion and what you dont just dismiss, Religion is the finger of the moon pointing at spirituality. For the MAGAS(maybe not all) it seems pointing toward the Bishops statements don't compute with their stances on the issue and of course that's what the commies would do right? :( Father forgive them for they know not what they do. there is only ONE true judge ,all else in this realm here is sinking sand.

My wife and I walked a few blocks away about 830 last night, to a place with a better sky-view than our street offers.

Didn't see anything special, though.

Narr.
I took main street west until I was well in the cornfields and saw them. A lot of people were parked alongside the road. They were washed out but you could plainly see them.

I'm glad you got a good look, Rusty. I'm deep inside Memphis with trees and a lot of light pollution--I'm sure the bluffs would be ideal but neither of us likes to drive at night.

Narr. There is some advantage living in dinner plate flat Northern Illinois. Not even the interesting part where the last glacier ended, but the part where if you take Rt.30 there's nothing but corn and soy beans until you get to the Mississippi.
