"Ruth told me that a couple of decades ago her daughter was prescribed Zoloft, an S.S.R.I., at 11 by a psychiatrist..."

"... after a humiliating incident at school 'left her feeling out of sorts and anxious.'... Her daughter wound up staying on the drug for a decade, until 2011. Only over the past few years has Ruth learned, from her daughter, about the sexual side effects she still lives with and about her grief. 'Her erogenous zones don’t work,' Ruth said. 'It makes me deeply sad, because our sexuality, the pleasure we get from our bodies and our intimacy with another person, it’s such a beautiful experience; it helps us to feel not alone.' Thinking back, Ruth said, 'I have huge, terrible regret' about allowing her child to be medicated. 'I can’t believe I so easily said yes.'"

From "More Teens Are Taking Antidepressants. It Could Disrupt Their Sex Lives for Years. Research on adults who take S.S.R.I.s shows they tamp down sexual desire. Why aren’t we studying what that could mean for adolescents who take them?" (NYT).

In the comments over there, from someone who says he's a doctor: "Overmedicalizing normal variations in children will bite us in the behind."

Stop all this worrying/fantasizing?

When I was young, it was common if a friend was anxious or depressed to comment "He/She needs to get laid". It probably would be an effective solution at that age. In modern times we get young people dependent on medications instead (for moderates) or convince them to mutilate themselves (for liberals).

Who wants to bet that "Ruth" and everyone else involved are big fans of removing the sex organs of mentally ill children and giving them powerful drugs to ensure that they will never experience sexual pleasure or have children of their own?

Chances are they even support having the State take the children away from their parents at gunpoint and place them in foster care for their diabolical Dr Mengele mutilation, if the parents disagree with the schoolmarm and school nurse and social worker over whether they are in fact boys or girls.

When this madness is over there must be a tribunal. These people must hang for what they've done.

At every annual physical, my female doctor asks if I have any depression. My answer is - "of course."
she then asks if I want anti-depressants. I respond the same every time, "no".
We humans need to deal with our emotions without pills. Western social pressures insist we must be happy all the time. That is not realistic. Dealing with depression is something everyone should learn. We don't do that in our pill popping culture.
After decades of mass anti-depressant use, the side effects are coming due. Ever see the ads for meds to aid the offset of negative effects of anti-depressant use? yeah - that tells a story.

I believe more studying effects is part of the MAHA agenda, since we relied too heavily on modeling and non-peer reviewed crap during COVID. In addition now we have discovered how poorly earlier "warnings" and "advice" were documented and developed. It was almost as if Big Pharma ran the agencies instead of the other way round.

Ding ding ding! We have a winner! Yes, how many teen problems come from not letting them do what they’re made to do?

Maybe if 13 yo boys start presenting to the school shrink as lesbian nymphomaniacs….CC, JSM

If I wanted to develop a conspiracy theory here, I'd assume that what looks like the side effect is the real goal: destroying the sexuality of the young. Compare medical treatments for young people who express the feeling of identifying with the opposite sex.

My doctor recommends flying south for the winter or a vitamin D supplement.

I wonder if part of the rise in kink, trans, and queerness is because younger generations, having been permanently chemically altered, only get arousal from sex in ways that don’t matter to reproduction, because their reproduction organs no longer work.

Antidepressants do inhibit sexual feelings. Other factors in making young people less sexual are the devotion to screens and video games, the increasing distance between the sexes, and the negative attitude towards the promiscuity of earlier generations.

AI says that Ritalin can increase or decrease sex drive, based on the person.

Depression disrupts one's sex life too, of course. Like any medicine, antidepressants are over-prescribed to some, while others need them to function.

Can we start with basic agreement? 11 -15 years olds don't need to worry about their "erogenous zones"
(1/2 of US states (by number, not by population) have an age of consent of 16. So in those you can argue that the 16 years olds can start worrying about those "erogenous zones")

Women compete in the reproductive market place in 2 ways.

One is to find a good mate who will provide good genes and food.

The other is to sabotage other women’s reproduction.

There is a deep biological drive to vote for people who push eugenics style policies.

When I was 13, I was deeply unhappy because of the Hellhole public school. My parents took me to a shrink, who asked me questions for an hour, to which I gave monosyllabic answers, diagnosed me with depression, and prescribed some sort of brainfuck chemical. Fortunately, they made me sleepy, so I flushed them down the toilet. When my parents took me to the shrink the next week, I waited 'til they drove off and then walked over to my sister's house. I was a wise enough child to know that talking to adults about my problems would only make them worse.

Lazarus, about 6 years ago I was passing through UC Davis and stopped at an enormous sports bar to watch a Warriors playoff game. P!ace was full of picnic tables and college students. Almost all of the tables were single-sex. Most of the kids were looking at their phones.
After watching this for a half hour I told my wife I seriously wanted to start hauling the kids into mixed groups and stealing all their phones. She dissuaded me.

I've been confused as to why my primary physician keeps asking me about my moods, my thoughts, my feelings about myself.

My wife runs clinics. The questions are now part of standard medical practice for various reasons. Some of it is from CDC. You may recall a push to have physicians to ask people if they own a gun? Other questions are requested by the insurance. And there are ever more questions because the doctor’s associated clinic or hospital wants to offer other services. Some of those questions might be, when was the last time you had an eye or dental exam?

I've been confused as to why my primary physician keeps asking me about my moods, my thoughts, my feelings about myself.

A lot of the time, requirements to ask questions like this (and to ask if you feel safe in the home or whether you have guns in the home and if so, how are they stored) are set by either the government or the insurance companies, with some pay potentially withheld if the doctor fails to ask them.

tommyesq said...

Also, as Leland said, the particular practice may insist on these questions to push other services. "Would you like a hot apple pie with that Big Mac?"

Rush Medical System in Chicago has "Do you feel safe in your home environment?" as a standard question when a patient is roomed for an appointment, but a lot of the medical assistants skip it. And since this is Chicago, the answer might depend on the definition of "home environment".

As a retired Clinical Psychologist, I have no problems with people taking SSRIs in the short term

The purpose of anti-depressants is/was to help your moods temporarily so that you could figure out how to handle the stressors behind your depression and anxiety with counseling/psychotherapy.

However, from my experience with newer generation psychiatrists and other MH professionals, SSRIs are increasingly used as a complete treatment without end.

It is as if MH professionals (and the MH establishment) have no clue and/or no desire to treat the underlying causes of dysphoria. Just give them a drug and let them go their merry way.

n.n said...

Most people will transition through emotional dysphoria without treatment, perhaps with climate change. The same for most pathogens where natural immunity saves the majority from suffering the migratory effects of modern therapies.

The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum was a psychiatric hospital located in Weston, WV. The asylum was open to patients from October 1864 until May 1994. The asylum became the home for the West Virginia Lobotomy Project in the early 1950s. This was an effort by the state of West Virginia to use lobotomy to reduce the number of patients because there was severe overcrowding. I had an aunt who visited Weston to be given electroconvulsive therapy, a psychiatric treatment that causes a generalized seizure by passing electrical current through the brain.

On Oct. 31, 1963, President John F. Kennedy signed a bill meant to free many thousands of Americans with mental illnesses from life in institutions. But JFK wanted community-based mental healthcare, which never happened. Instead, mental health specialists chose the approach that one drug does it all in the form of SSRIs. And the Feds made some rules that required schools to monitor ADHD, and suddenly, pediatricians and GPs were prescribing dangerous mental health drugs. Today mentally incapable folks walk the streets alone.
