"During the press conference on Thursday, Pirro said the two Guardsmen were sworn in 24 hours prior to being shot."

"A joint task force spokesperson later said the two Guard members were deputized less than 24 hours before the shooting to 'maintain their status to conduct presence patrols,' according to a joint task force spokesperson."

From "What we know about the 2 National Guard members shot near White House/The two soldiers are still in critical condition" (ABC New).

Pirro = Jeanine Pirro, U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia.

"The victims were identified as 20-year-old Army Spc. Sarah Beckstrom and 24-year-old U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe."

The quoted text gives the impression that Beckstrom and Wolfe were under-prepared but I don't think that impression is correct. I think the swearing in was the activation for this immediate mission. Both had been in the National Guard for years.

I'd be interested to know how much body armor they had, and what rifles, etc. they had. And the same with the shooter.

Story yesterday was he came around corner, shot woman with his 357 revolver, she fell, he took her pistol and shot her in the head, and then shot the other Guard.

As usual, story may change hourly/daily

Agreed Anne. Legacy media at it again. Why?

A Major who was supervising, then attacked the perpetrator with a pocket knife! Another soldier then shot the attacker.

Can the media be any more vile than they are?

The collective left follow orders.
You are to HATE the National Guard.

If they truly march to the orders of their corporate masters, I find it hard to believe that businesses operating for profit would think this negative horseshit is a sustainable, winning strategy… it makes no sense.

Unless, of course, they are also beneficiaries of the raid on the US Treasury.

Predicted Messaging Machine response: leave out relevant information so its not "technically" "lying":

"A Muslim immigrant was gunned down on the street by Trump's para-military operation who were "just following orders." Human rights advocates had warned repeatedly that Trump's use of the military on city streets was straight from the authoritarian handbook and would inevitably lead to violence."

The press has turned the-benefit-of-the-doubt on it's head. The healthy thing to do is to expect mischief.

Like the shooter, the Guardsmen are Trump's victims. So am I. So are you. That's the message.

Happy Thanksgiving.

Read the comments by Inga, TeaBagHag, et. al. Yeah, the media can go lower. And probably will.

I suspect the "swearing in" was to deputize them as federal law enforcement. That qualifies the prosecution as an attack on federal law enforcement officers which is a more serious charge.

Army Specialist and AF Staff Sergeant: they've completed at least one enlistment term.

Well based on the age, the 20 yo was in the Army for at most 3 years. Confusingly, a USAF Staff Sergeant is an E-5, one grade lower than the ranks called by that name in the Army and USMC. At 24 yo, he's been in for at most 7 years. But yes, in typical military fashion, I am quite sure they were put on the street only after a formal program of individual and unit training for the mission, especially since it has been going on for a few months. The deputization - either as Special Deputy US Marshals or special DC peace officers or both - would be the final formality, done in town because that's where the people swearing them in are.

Still and all, if you aren't used to the ebb and flow of crowds in a busy place like the Farragut West Metro entrance, and the complex geometry of an urban environment, it's easy to be surprised. Still pretty easy even if you are used to it. Also difficult to bring a rifle to bear on a threat from any sort of the carry positions I've seen the Guard using here. And we don't know what condition they're carrying in - is there a round in the chamber, or do they have to charge the weapon first? CC, JSM

Interesting. That means they're deploying Air National Guard as well as Army National Guard, not something they normally do if they just want boots on the ground. I wonder if this is because they're deploying MP/SP units? That would make a lot of sense if you want them to supplement Federal law enforcement.
