"The idea that you could turn the clock back and try to recreate a world that never was dominated by, you know, let’s say it: white men of a certain persuasion, a certain religion, a certain point of view, a certain ideology, it’s just doing such damage to what we should be aiming for."

Said Hillary Clinton, quoted in "Hillary Clinton ripped for tone-deaf remarks about white men of 'a certain religion' damaging the US" (NY Post).

Tone deaf?! It's not tone deaf. She's precisely picked up the tone. Perfect pitch. She's talking exactly like the people she's talking with. I'm sure it's quite jaunty and subtle and good humored for them. How do you get to tone deaf? The NY Post is tone deaf. Hillary is right on key.

Reading further, I see the argument is that she's supposed to still be constraining her remarks to fit the ongoing mourning period for Charlie Kirk. The NY Post quotes random tweets that accuse Clinton of creating a permission structure for killing white Christian men. Some unnamed person tweeted: "Two weeks after Charlie Kirk is assassinated, Hillary Clinton reminds everyone that white Christian men are dangerous and doing damage to America. These people have no intention of turning down the temperature. They know they’re encouraging what happened." And somebody else tweeted: "Hillary Clinton makes yet another case for violence against white Christian men — the constant drumbeat against huge segments of the population is dehumanizing and dangerous. Her focus on Christianity is chilling — especially given the fact that she can’t bring herself to even name the religion."

If the New York Post were really concerned about cranking up dangerous hostility, they wouldn't go looking for things like that and printing them. Hillary wasn't saying anything about fomenting violence, just arguing against the looking to the past as a model for going forward without the limitations of the past. Let's do it again, but without the lack of diversity. It won't work.

I agree with your (Ann’s) assessment and would add that I somewhat agree with Hillary here. We aren’t going back to 1955. That said, there is something deeply troubling about Hillary Clinton’s worldview and that something is the person expressing it. This woman is filled with anger, bitterness, and (sorry to use the word) hate.

I was reading a book about Nixon in the early 90s. "Nixon in winter" or something. And he was discussing Hillary with some other old-timey Republicans and they were marveling at what a steely-eyed leftist she was. Dangerous but super-competent. A crackpot but ambitious.

What they didnt notice is what a liar she is. She approved the whole "Steele Dossier" attack on Trump, and has spent the last 10 years smearing everyone she doesn't like as a "Putin asset" or a "White supremist"

Thank God Trump came along and saved us from President Hilllary.

Hillary's not a Christian. Her aides have usually been Muslim, atheist, or Jewish. Her daughter is married to a Jew and her Grandkids are being raised as Jews. And she's always hated the white middle class. Other than carrying around a big fake bible and having a fake "open marriage" with Billy Bob, its impossible to find anything Christian about her.

No wonder she's talking about how horrible White Christians are.

Shorter version of Hillary's comments: "Me! Me! Look at me! I'm still relevant! I'm edgy and controversial!"

To be fair, it's really our fault. We ignore her when she says something sane or reasonable. We ignore anything she does because nothing she does is relevant. We only pay attention when she says something like this, so she says stuff like this.

I agree that she's not "fomenting" violence, but creating a permission structure? Or adding to one? In a rather oblique way, I'll admit: just by implying that (a caricature of) the '50s in all its lily-white glory is the goal of the Trump administration and its supporters. Mind-reading, at minimum.

If you know that there's a militant wing of your side that believes, to their core, that disagreement with (or failure to acknowledge the beautiful primacy of) them is "erasure" or "genocide," then it seems to me that Job 1 is to do something about that wing - either talk them out of their delusion or, if that's not possible, cut them out of your side. On the right, we tend to do the latter (I think most of the time without trying to talk, say, an actual white supremacist out of his delusion - which may not be to our credit a la Charlie Kirk, but does bring to mind the thing about wrestling a pig in mud).

The left tends to do neither, it seems to me. And they keep talking to the whole of the public as if that wing doesn't exist and isn't affected by what they say. If you've taken steps to say, "There is [for example] such a thing as Trantifa - it's a tiny group but it does exist - and they are no part of us" then you have more rhetorical room to maneuver than if you keep shouting "Trans people are always victims of the cis-heteronormative white patriarchy!"

Or - if you're Ezra Klein and you want to see more civil discourse and believe that someone on the opposite side of you was trying to bring about such a thing, you don't have to back all the way out of the room in which you expressed that wish just because Ta-Nehisi* Coates disagrees with you. You could just go on disagreeing with him. Except that he is an Elder or Prophet or something of the secular religion to which Klein adheres and to disagree with him is apostasy.

* His name - or rather, his pronunciation of it - bugs me as much as Brett Favre's. Guys. Sound it out.

" white men of a certain persuasion, a certain religion, a certain point of view, a certain ideology"

Yeah, the Protestant Anglosphere/NW Europe ideology was terrible. What with the Industrial Revolution replacing animal power with steam/fossil fuel power and their whacky ideas about secure private property, equality under the law, free speech. And who can forget their being the original Karens and imposing their abolition of slavery ideas on other cultures and dissenters in their own culture.

Were the "without sin"? Well, no. They were changing the hearts of men and challenging the ideas that had persisted for millennia.

Prior to 1800, most of the world in the eighteenth century would have been easily recognizable to those from the eighth century. Mistakes were made along the way but striving for the ideal persisted

"The Saxon farmer of the eighth century enjoyed most of the comforts known to Saxon farmers in the eighteenth. THe eorls and ceorls of Offa and Ecgbert could not read or write, and did not receive a weekly newspaper with such information as newspapers in that age could supply; yet neither their houses, their clothing, their food and drink, their agricultural tools and methods, their stock, nor their habits were so greatly altered or improved by time that they would have found much difficulty in accommodating their lives to that of their descendants in the eighteenth century. In this respect America was backward. "

Well, we actually HAD one of those within the borders of the United States for a few decades, as a matter of fact. The majority of the intermountain west was settled by the LDS church, pretty much acting as the government. From 1847 to roughly 1890 or so, you could likely characterize Utah, Idaho, parts of Wyoming, Nevada, Arizona, and even such places as San Diego as being "run" by the Democrats dreaded Christian Theocracy.

Anyone-- ANYONE rational, would look at what life was like underneath the "iron fist" of Brigham Young and compare it to life in a Democrat paradise like Detroit or Baltimore. Both are shining examples of places and people being run solely by their theology.

Which has turned out better? Utah under Brigham Young... or Detroit under Democrat total control?

I should clarify: which has turned out better for the people. Because clearly a whoooole lot of Democrat politicians and corrupt hangers on got rich off of Detroit, while their people were destroyed.

That's what Inga and the rest is afraid of: They want more Detroit, not more Utah.

The NY Post take on Hillary's latest was clumsy, as Ann notes. But the open public expression of anti white, anti straight male and anti Christian views by one of the Democratic Party standard beaters is not just newsworthy. It is the summation of decades in which she and her party pretended that the central goal was equal treatment for all. That was a lie. That's how the NYP should have covered it.

If the New York Post were really concerned about cranking up dangerous hostility, they wouldn't go looking for things like that and printing them. Hillary wasn't saying anything about fomenting violence, just arguing against the looking to the past as a model for going forward without the limitations of the past.

What is conspicuously missing are any specific references: who argued for something admirable in the past that somehow carries with it some unspecified limitations?

Like virtually everything she says, it is specious argle bargle. She makes a an accusation as condescending as it is irrefutable. Why anyone interviews her for anything more substantive than cookie recipes is a mystery for the ages.

I fully expect Inga to come in next and claim that the synagogue shooting/bomb attack in England yesterday on Yom Kippur was done by some MAGA person too, even though it's in England. Despite the guy likely being named Abdul Mohammed Hussein or something similar, most likely. I think for Inga, all violence she cannot support (like Jane's Revenge burning down Catholic churches is just fine) must be MAGA violence, because by definition leftists are pure and holy and never, ever do anything wrong and are better people than Jesus' 12 Apostles so cannot do anything wrong....

Yancey Ward said...

Inga, post your evidence that the Michigan guy was MAGA. What I find most illuminating is that the story vanished completely from the anti-Trump media within 48 hours.

Vance said...

And Inga keeps saying 1) I'm not blaming MAGA people and 2) I know without any proof that MAGA people were the ones to kill the LDS church members!

Inga, those are two contradictory positions. You have repeatedly been asked to show any sort of evidence that "MAGA beliefs" had anything at all to do with standard leftist style hatred of LDS people.

I will note, however, that apparently waving an American flag is enough to be labeled as MAGA nowadays... leftists apparently do not think it is possible for anyone other than MAGA people to wave an American flag. "Certainly no leftist would ever be caught dead celebrating America!" they sniff. "No one could possibly believe that an actual leftist would have any sort of patriotism!" Well, I guess I cannot argue with that.

Vance said...

Yes, Yancy, that's always the tell. If a leftist did it, the story gets buried faster than a line of cocaine disappears in front of Hunter Biden.

It's still big news here in Utah, of course. Headquarters of the Church. But outside of Utah, I think the left is running as fast as they can from the story.... just like they did with Charlie Kirk's assassination.

Hey Skipper said...

Inga: All the hysteria, yes, hysteria about people on the left wanting to kill people on the right if they criticize the [left] is getting to sound insane. We hear it everyday here in these threads by certain commenters.

There are instances beyond counting prior to Kirk's assassination accusing him of every -ist and -ism under the sun. They got to their libels by abjectly, or maliciously, failing to engage is actual arguments in context.

Progressives insist speech is violence. And to at least some, the answer to speech as violence is violence.

There are plenty of progressives so wedded to their shibboleths that they view disagreement as existential threat needing to be countered by any means necessary.

Speech is violence. By any means necessary. They are incitements coming solely from progressives.

Partially true. But most Latin American countries have been ruled by people, mostly men, who have been either of full, or at least predominantly, European ancestry.

In 2006 for example, a lot of people made a big deal out of the fact that Evo Morales was Bolivia’s first president of Indian descent.

Clinton should have understood that her listeners weren't just going to be those in the room or auditorium with her. Her words were going to reach a wider audience that wouldn't be happy with them, so yes, she was tone deaf.

AWFLs make the strange assumption that they aren't white, don't share in what white men have done, and would be welcome where white men aren't, when in fact they may even be less welcome.

The idea that conservatives longed to return to "a past that never was" was an effective rejoinder 50 years ago. Since then it's become a cliche. That is to say that, like the nostalgia itself, it's something people say to avoid serious thinking about the present and the past.

Then why not just say that? It would have been a valid point and possibly even inspiring, but Clinton wanted, and her audience wanted, an indictment of a specific group -- or rather, a wholesale indictment of a whole group of people.

That's what it's come to. From Kennedy saying that he wanted us to move forward, to Clinton, Obama and Biden deploring deplorables and bitter clingers. What we hear so often about Trump is that the meanness, the "hate" is the message, but that's true across the political spectrum, and Trump isn't as noteworthy a "hater" as some others who don't have that reputation with the establishment media.

About 500 years ago (1492 is a good date), white Christian men exploded out of Europe and quite quickly conquered or otherwise dominated the world, in every category imaginable.
It was a white mans world and it mostly still is, and for good(or logical) reasons.
Even in such categories explicitly opposed to this European domination, which is one of the greatest ironies ever.
Even the non-European enemies of European domination had to turn themselves at least partly-European to have a chance of competing.
As a beneficiary of this conquest, having inherited the privileges won by my actual conquering ancestors, and a paid up member of the white Euro- Christian man club, I think this is a great thing. The conquests proceed btw.
My children, descendants of people who would have accrued frequent-sailer miles (and who ate rats to make it across the Pacific, don't complain about airline food) are working on the Artemis Moon missions.

That's an interesting point and worth making. I didn't give careful consideration to Latin America. I'd respond by pointing out that being "ruled" (the highest political leaders) is not being "dominated by" (which would include the majority of the legislators, business leaders and most entrepeneurs). In reality, almost all are/were mestizo with varying degrees of Indian ancestry. Many or most were probably more Native American than European genetically.
Also interesting is the fact that the three South American counties that are the whitest, Argentina, Chile, and Urugay are the ones that have historically had the least out migration.

This came up a lot in my Science Fiction courses: the desperate demonization of the '50s is starting to collapse under its own contradictions and will be completely gone as soon as the last Boomers shuffle off.

Thus far I have only heard the sentiment from women, who more can get away with something "transgressive" like this because they're being 'edgy.' But that's always how a rejection of dogma starts, a trickle before the dam bursts.

I remember a very interesting discussion of it on the old Asymmetrical Information blog back in the day - back when Megan McArdle was a libertarian instead of whatever she is now.

I started rereading it a few months ago but didn't get very far before my life was overtaken by events and I returned to short-form reading. I recall that it gave me a sense of great humility for the accident of my birth.

Jamie said...

Also - I entirely misread Clinton's quoted statement because of the omitted comma (thank you to whichever commenter, above, clarified that matter for me!). I thought she was saying that (as implied) MAGA entails "a desire to return to a world of the past that was never dominated by white Christian men" - not "a world of the past that never existed, but when we (MAGA, that is) succeed in immanentizing it, will be dominated by white Christian men."

The first is a fiction but could have been a concession to "bringing down the temperature" - "Look! The world of the past WASN'T the hell we've been saying it was! But it's foolish of them to think that they can return to that not-so-bad past without the baggage of their patriarchal movement."

The second is bad mind-reading, so my first comment, above (if I actually published it - I don't remember now), stands, even though I got to my conclusion of bad mind-reading in a different way.

Another bunch of powerful white men handed her a NY Senatorship. And then handed her the POTUS nomination in 2016 on silver platter.

Its hard to think of person who did so little on their own and got handed so much. And when they had to compete for something (2008 nomination or the 2016 Presidency) failed.
