"Senate Democrats have now voted 12 times to not fund the food stamp program, also known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)."

"Bottom line, the well has run dry. At this time, there will be no benefits issued November 01. We are approaching an inflection point for Senate Democrats. They can continue to hold out for healthcare for illegal aliens and gender mutilation procedures or reopen the government so mothers, babies, and the most vulnerable among us can receive critical nutrition assistance."

Gender mutilation procedures! The Democrats say that what they are fighting for is to keep health insurance premiums from doubling. It's a shame the issues are so confusing. We're talking about millions of ordinary people — 43 million — facing loss of food stamps. That's so much raw anxiety. So elemental. How are they supposed to begin to think about complicated politics? By getting upset about transgender people and immigrants taking their money?!

If the USMC was using a firing range under I-5, then how did a cop car above I-5 get hit by a rock. It is almost like they make up a story and never check to see if it is even plausible.

On THAT day they went over the freeway, that’s why it was such a notable event. Usually they had live fire exercises that went under the freeway.

Inga said...

“Got a link for that?”

No. I’ll let the anti AI commenters who deny that the Marines fired beneath the freeway in the past find it in their huge brains, or break down and do some research.

Original Mike said...

It doesn't make any sense. How does firing under the freeway provide training for shells that are to follow a ballistic trajectory?

Short answer: It doesn't.

A bit of research suggests that total US governments food assistance is roughly 170 billion, going to roughly 85 million individuals. That's $2000 per person per year for food assist.

My AI says:

"There is no evidence that the military fires live rounds under I-5 during training at Camp Pendleton; all documented incidents and official reports relate to live-fire exercises conducted over I-5 (above the freeway), not beneath it. The October 2025 live-fire event involved artillery shells being fired over the freeway during both a rehearsal and the formal demonstration, with shrapnel falling from an overhead explosion, but there are no reports, guidelines, or official statements indicating that military training involves firing live ammunition under the I-5 roadway or its bridges.

Routine training at Camp Pendleton is conducted in designated impact areas east of I-5, and any firing in proximity to I-5 involves trajectories that pass above the freeway, not underneath it. Safety protocols and incident reports reveal no instances of live munitions being discharged under Interstate 5 at Camp Pendleton, and such an activity would be highly unusual and contrary to standard military and public safety practices."

So there.

Illegal migrants are not eligible for SNAP unless they are refugees or seeking asylum which is practically all of them.

Inga is right that the only useful answer now is to support the food banks either by volunteering or donating - IF, IF, IF the Dems continue to insist on funding healthcare for migrants and trans. And even if the Dems are forced to reconsider after Nov. 1 , the defunding machine will roll on for awhile. I totally support the Republican elected majority not allowing the Dems to achieve the Dem party goals by the Dems taking veterans and babies hostage. But the veterans and working poor that depended on the Dems caring about them must be fed in this emergency including by Republicans by supporting food banks. I agree there has been a ratchet. But I'm not going to be Nurse Ratchet. If that's feminization's inconsistency at work, so be it.

B) training beneath I-5

where A is one thing and B is a different thing? If not, why not?

And Mason, Oct 18th was the first and only time they fired OVER THE I-5 FREEWAY.

There is no evidence that Camp Pendleton has fired munitions over Interstate 5 (I-5) before October 18, 2025. Multiple sources, including official statements from the California state government and the California Highway Patrol (CHP), confirm that the state has no records of any such over-freeway live-fire activity prior to this event. The October 18 incident—part of a Marine Corps 250th anniversary demonstration—was described as “highly unusual,” “extremely rare,” and unprecedented, with no formal provisions in Camp Pendleton’s artillery procedures for firing over the freeway.

“Speaker Mike Johnson is siding with the Trump administration’s decision not to tap emergency funds to avert a lapse in food aid for 42 million Americans.

Johnson said Monday a SNAP contingency fund, which currently contains $5 billion, is “not legally available to cover the benefits right now” because they represent “a finite source of funds.” Democrats, and privately some Republicans, have argued the administration always has the legal authority to tap those funds in an emergency.”

Oh yeah, SNAP recipients will care about the legal ramifications of Trump’s withholding of the emergency funds. Republicans will own SNAP being shut down for the first time EVER. People won’t forget, Venezuela gets $ 20 billion, SNAP recipients get crumbs.

But AI is only going to help the people who have the ability to understand how words are actually used in multiple contexts.

AI in the hands of an idiot like Inga will just mean fewer misspellings and more words that don't mean anything applicable.

You have to be able to understand all of the ways the words in a prompt can be used to know when you got output that does not match what you intended.

Also understanding the way that AI/LLMs build context will keep you in the game longer. But it wont matter really.

After a few more years 95% of the people in the world are not going to be able to keep up with the rate of change.

Go to Google Maps at these coordinates:
33°17'54.0"N 117°27'54.4"W
This is the interchange between Interstate 5 and Las Pulgas Road near where the CHP was staging. Go to Street View at that location. It is physically impossible to shoot artillery from the beach - any beach - and hit the target range. Many of the live fire exercises come from ships, and by necessity would have to pass over the highway. It is even more impossible for a shell fired under the overpass to drop debris on vehicles parked above it.

I'll still reserve judgment until USMC has completed its investigation. Even though live fire was clearly going above I-5 in the exercise, damage from a shell that detonated prematurely would have come down with such force that it would have penetrated sheet metal and window glass. It also would have been moving with a great deal of forward momentum and the likelihood of falling straight down is slim to none.

"Beneath I-5" can mean two things. That the Marines are physically on the west side, the ocean side, of I-5 and are live firing into the ocean. The other is that for some reason there is a hole under I-5 and the Marines are on the east side of of I-5 and are firing artillery through that hole. You can go to Google Maps and see that there is very little of the Marine Corps on the west side of I-5. Certainly no artillery parks.
The conclusion I draw is that the artillery is located somewhere east of I-5 and the rounds are fired over I-5 into the ocean. Tell me if you don't think this is a reasonable conclusion to make.
