The church was beautiful, but the "show" was tawdry and demeaning, not at all worthy of the glory that inspired the place. What is worthy of the glory that inspired such places is, for instance, Evensong (for the Anglicans), properly celebrated.
My church choir in Pennsylvania has had the honor of being summer choir in residence at a number of Anglican cathedrals, including Canterbury (that's the only one at which I wasn't present). Daily Evensong, and Sunday Eucharist. The singing of Evensong is something we have always approached with the greatest dedication and reverence. The congregation at every service has always responded in kind.
I was raised Catholic, but because it was in the Vatican II era, I'm unfamiliar with any similarly beautiful daily office in the Catholic Church - but real (i.e., pre-Vatican II - sorry, I just can't stand the newer stuff for the most part) Catholic liturgical music is both far older than Anglican, and just as beautiful.

Whenever I might complain or deride the ugly spray painting and gang threats, a Democrat Party member was always there to tell me that "This is their art". One church, in a charming little wood, initially appealed - but then we learned (and I'm sorry, but exactly how we learned is lost to the dim mists of time) that the rector and his associate (who was also his wife, we later learned) were being.... looked into, or thereabouts, by the diocese because they'd been performing Druidic rituals during the Eucharist.
Now, since no one actually knows what a Druidic ritual would have looked like, this label must have been self-applied. The woodland setting apparently inspired these goofballs.
