I'm reading "Alex Jones asks Supreme Court to block massive defamation judgment/Jones says the court must act immediately to prevent his site, InfoWars, where he has spread conspiracy theories, from being handed over to the satirical news site The Onion" (NBC News).
Didn't Jones successfully fend of The Onion already? "The Onion failed in a previous attempt to acquire InfoWars via a bankruptcy auction, but Jones' lawyer said a new attempt is underway in Texas state court."Here’s what the Associated Press Stylebook says: “‘Underway’: one word in all uses.”
Seems pretty straightforward, until you open an older edition of the AP guide from back in the days when I was first learning how to edit.
“‘Under way’: two words in virtually all uses: ‘The project is under way. The naval maneuvers are under way,’” the 1993 edition instructs.
“One word only when used as an adjective before a noun in a nautical sense: ‘an underway flotilla.’”...
But the confusion doesn’t end with AP. Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate dictionary, which influences a lot of published writing, prefers “underway” as an adverb, but also allows “under way.”...
Like AP, Merriam’s describes an adjective “underway,” which is the one you should use when you’re describing a noun such as the aforementioned flotilla....
Misty is small and pretty in the way that a country-and-western singer might be. She recently started an executive secretarial course at Hardbarger Business College. This is her first semester, and she’s taking a spelling class. “Let me give you a little pop quiz,” she said to Joe. “Spell class-action lawsuit.”
I thought she’d hit him with something a little harder, like arbitration.
But now "class-action lawsuit" is actually a lot harder than "arbitration." There are 4 potential words there: class, action, law, and suit. You have to separate "class" and "action" and also connect them with a hyphen, and you have to keep "law" and "suit" together. But it's not the spelling. The 4 words are easy to spell. It's that other thing that's hard, that thing I don't know the word for. Style?
ADDED: The first commenter, MadTownGuy, offers what I believe is the right word: Orthography. Wikipedia says: "An orthography is a set of conventions for writing a language, including norms of spelling, punctuation, word boundaries, capitalization, hyphenation, and emphasis."

Whether you're using digital, typewriting, or handwriting, it all boils down to orthography.
Actually "underweigh" or perhaps "under weigh" if used in the nautical or naval context
Use of underway peaked dramatically around 1977. What the heck was going on? The Love Boat?
Under whey.
Cheese factory basement.
I think the space is on equal footing with the letters of the alphabet. Like the number zero on the number line.
Programmers like to group things like spaces, tabs, line feeds, new lines, etc into the category of white space characters.
“ Actually "underweigh" or perhaps "under weigh" if used in the nautical or naval context”
It’s very confusing, I was never a professional sailor but you weigh anchor and you need to maintain steerage way ( keep your speed up so the rudder works.). So you need to weigh to allow you way.
Has any lefty litigant ever been burdened with an unconstitutionally high fine? Now we have Trump and Jones. Hmm. Seems to be another inequitably applied penalty used to target non-leftists.
I was also taught that you put the punctuation inside the paren but blogger text editor puts a period after any way.
I am trying to figure out how class-action lawsuit gets us to arbitration, Alex Jones, and his well-earned losses to parents who lost their children in school shootings in court, but maybe this is just a delightful rumination about a tidy young woman demonstrating her acquisition of useful skills.
I've always thought of spacing as punctuation.
And, the Jones judgement was wildly inappropriate.
I like the 1993 edition. Makes sense.
The Russian Collusion Hoax did more damage than the Sandy Hook hoax.
All media organizations that carried the Russian Collusion Hoax should be repossessed as well.
"Under weigh" is a nautical-derived, acceptable variant spelling of the term underway or under way, which means a ship is in motion or any activity is in progress. The spelling "under weigh" emerged from a mistaken association with the phrase "weigh anchor," but it is now considered an acceptable alternate spelling in standard English despite the original term's non-nautical origin.
Key Points
Meaning: Both "under weigh" and "underway" (or "under way") mean a ship is moving or an activity has started.
Origin: The term "under way" is older and likely comes from a Dutch word meaning "on the way," not from "weigh anchor".
Misassociation: The "weigh" in "under weigh" is an erroneous association with the nautical act of lifting the anchor, which is also called "weighing the anchor".
Acceptance: While "underway" or "under way" is the original and generally preferred term, "under weigh" is accepted in standard English and is widely used.
Usage: It can be used in a literal nautical sense (a ship is under weigh) or in a more figurative sense (e.g., "Registration is under weigh").
Yonder way
Not sure I agree about Jones, Mike. I spent his worst-behaved year listening to him every day for research for a small book chapter (I did so while working a manual labor job; otherwise I would have just sampled some shows). While I was impressed by his sheer theatrical skills, he crossed quite deliberately into encouraging his audience to stalk, not government officials, but private citizens who had lost children in school shootings, and several had their privacy invaded, were harassed, and even endangered by his followers. He yelled fire in a crowded theater, not just once, but several times a day, every day. I concluded that he didn't even believe many of the things he was saying, but he said them deliberately to push his followers to take action. It's too bad he chose to do this, because he discredited a political movement as well as a few compelling themes he was also pushing. But his is a fairly unique case on the Right. I take your larger point but can't apply it to Jones.
Again, we always need the propaganda label, in this case "spread conspiracy theories" so we know what to think. Thanks NBC, for looking out for us. Wouldn't want to make a mistake and like Alex Jones!
Of course no matter what you think of Jones, and I don't think much of him, the idea that he should have to pay a billion dollars for "Defamation" is insane. Even more crazy is that Fox News settled out of court and paid Dominion almost $1 Billion for supposed "defamation". Corporations should be forced to prove loss of business to get defamation awards and the amounts should be reasonable.
But again, we have a two tier justice system.
I have tags for "punctuation" and for "spelling," but what's a space?
The final frontier.
The magic words in Texas are "Sandy Hook."
"Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones could soon be forced to stop airing his Infowars show and give up the company's property, including everything from desks and microphones to the Infowars brand name. A state judge in Texas ordered Infowars' assets to be turned over to a newly-appointed state receiver, who will sell them to pay the families of the Connecticut children killed in the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. They won a $1.3 billion defamation case against Jones."
This has nothing to do with "The Onion." If a MAGA type wants to buy an "Info Wars" microphone with Alex Jones' slobber all over it, here is the opportunity to secure the souvenir.
"Weigh (or Way) Enough" is the command to stop rowing a racing shell. Heard on Mendota quite commonly...

I think they picked up the conspiracy hoax network CBS pretty cheap recently.
CBS kept running with hoax stories so the value was pretty low.
Achilles: What in the fuck does CBS have to do with Jones losing a defamation lawsuit? How could you possibly have composed this answer about CBS, and a nonexistent hoax?.
Alex Jones should have his speech limited and if it takes stealing his stuff, then the court should allow that.
And I'm certain they're about to do just that.
Welcome to America.
Anyone else remember the tv show “Way Out”?
“ Like AP, Merriam’s describes an adjective “underway,” which is the one you should use when you’re describing a noun such as the aforementioned flotilla....”
Is a dam overtopped, or over topped?
Jones was lazy and stupid, had he been a little more diligent, he would more likely still have his platform,
the plan was much more evil than 'crisis actors' the plan was to use spectacular events like sandy hook, as the left did with Dumblane and Hungerford in the UK, or Port Arthur,to deprive the citizens of self defense, if they had to do as with Parkland to cover up a ticking time bomb they would do it, a minor blood price,
I feel for the Onion. It must be getting very difficult to write actual satire in a world where the president wanted to nominate Matt Gaetz as Attorney General.
Infowars would continue doing what Infowars does. Its readers won’t even know or notice that’s it’s now satire.
"Whether you're using digital, typewriting, or handwriting, it all boils down to orthography."
I think you are right. That would cover spelling, punctuation, and spaces.

Just how stupid are you?
CBS spent years telling everyone Trump colluded with Russia to steal the 2016 election.
They knew it was a false story early on with no proof behind it.
That is malicious defamation. And it did way more damage than Jones did.
But you think Jones is different than CBS. That makes you very stupid or very dishonest.
I'm no fan of Alex Jones or the product he 'hucks', if that's what hucksters do. But this story is proof that Progressive lawfare warriors who thought what Jones did was obscene, are perfectly comfortable with obscenities - if it's one that they like. Because that's what the damage award is. Having inflicted it, they are in no position to whine when the opposing tacticians turn attention to them, as they inevitably will. You like ruination? How do you like this ruination?

Do you still believe in Trump Russian Collusion?
Just curious how stupid and gullible you are since you ran with that for years like a retard.
Im sure they lied about the sourcing of the matt gaetz story joel greenberg swamp parrot
A major difference between the left and the right in this country is how the average Trump supporter is able to reject things like Jones assertion of Sandy Hook being a hoax while the left sucks up any lie the media throws out about Trump like stupid drooling fuck muppets.
Gadfly and the sock muppet are perfect examples of people who have no self awareness and they don't realize how stupid they look.
They pretended the shambling heap was legitimitely the president
The onion didnt see the irony
That story was patently ridiculous now issuing stalking instructions took it to another level
Kerning and the physical limitations of typesetting explain a lot of pre-computer era orthography. As a young man, John Updike once worked as a typesetter, and he later studied both cartooning and classical drawing and illustration, not, he said, to become a visual artist but to delve into the appearance of texts. His father's visual fixation was comic book design: Updike's was fonts and book design. He wrote and said a lot of delightful things about the evolution and standardization of language and publication, down to the smells and heavy labor performed by factory workers delicately setting type by hand in enormous, loud machinery.
