I confess that whenever I hear the cheerful strains of El Jarabe Tapatío, it cracks me up, even before this (and I was the little white girl in the Mexican dancing group in my elementary school in Mesa back in the day, actually dancing to it). This is the part that bugs me.
I am and have always been suburban - ok, we lived in Seattle for seven years and were ten minutes from downtown, but for five of those years it was in our first house with a postage stamp of a yard and a little garden for us to tend. It's been easy for me to touch grass all my life, to the point where I didn't really "get" why this little phrase became a thing at first.
Then I remembered our six months in London, and visiting friends in NYC, during which grass was something we had to go seek out, which we could do because we were professionals who either had cars or could afford cabs and had time off from work - we weren't working multiple jobs to afford city life.
But of course who would want to live in the suburbs, those cultural deserts? As I've said elsewhere, this used to be pretty true, and (I believe) led to bridge groups and brunches at home and dinner parties and and book clubs and so on and so forth. At least, when we did live in London and visited those NYC friends, no one entertained at home - there was no space, and anyway, you were in the middle of the great whirl of Life and should be out in it, right?
The fact that suburbs are no longer cultural deserts doesn't matter. Suburbs are still where the declasse live.
So it seems that "touching grass" is yet another class signifier. Proper urbanites - that is to say, proper citizens - live in high density buildings and take (idealized visions of) public transportation, but also eat all their meals at tony restaurants and set aside weekends for "touching grass."
