"Ted Pellegatta... did odd jobs his whole life and lived in a studio apartment attached to a vacant barn."

"He often stood outside a local restaurant hawking copies of his self-published books of poetry and photos to supplement his $1,000-per-month Social Security check..... But Pellegatta died a happy man when he succumbed to metastatic cancer last month at the age of 85.... He was a MAGA guy who was beloved by liberals. He was an old Marine, waiter and farmhand who made friends with all classes, ages and colors.... His signature achievement was the coffee klatch he convened at the local coffee shop, Before & After, just about every morning for the past 10 years, and in other locations before that. Day after day, he’d sit in the front of the shop, wearing his cowboy hat... over his wild silver hair, and serve as the unofficial chairman.... Anybody who walked in was welcome in the discussion. The ground rules were simple: Show interest in one another... and refuse to fight.... If an argument got too hot, he’d shut it down with a 'meow.' If somebody was pontificating, he’d drop his head and snore. If the conversation annoyed him, he’d get up and leave — then start again the next day...."

The article — by Dana Milbank — mentions Charlie Kirk, but only like this: "Last week’s gruesome slaying of conservative leader Charlie Kirk was followed predictably by finger-pointing and cries for vengeance in many corners of the United States. But not at Before & After...." I wanted it to mention Charlie Kirk as a model for communication between people who disagree. Anybody who walked in was welcome in the discussion.

It seems pretty clear that Kirk, who swung many young voters to Trump and conservatism in 2024, had to be taken out before the 2026 election. The vilification of Republican influencers will continue in the hope of stimulating more of the same. The goal will be a Democrat Speaker and then ….

They are still trying to justify what Charlie got because he wasn’t the model. The model was the guy dying of cancer, because eventually the cancer would rid them of him. That is why he was good MAGA, to WaPo.

Yes, the good was opening up avenues to discussion that didn’t devolve to fights, or more.

is for the democrat party to STOP being anti american.

Lots of people in america LIKE america..
Lots of them actually MOVED Here, to be IN america..
so, maybe (just MAYBE); the democrat party could stop being against american things like
free speech
coffee groups meeting for coffee at diners
free speech
NOT being PRO MURDER
free speech
NOT being PRO RAPE
and finally; free speech

i KNOW this sounds CRAZY but democrats have tried a LOT of things
they should try something New.. Something Crazy..

All of the actual liberals are in the Republican Party now. RFK, Elon, Joe Rogan, Tulsi Gabbard and their supporters.

The only people left in the Democrat party now are vile totalitarians who cynically use freedom in this country to attack it.

My position on Flag burning has been completely rebuilt by this.

As of today the Flag symbolizes the Social Contract we all agree to together. We all agree to treat each other with respect and to protect each other's freedom.

The people who burn the flag are also the people who lie about their opponents and try to take the freedom to speak from others while holding the First Amendment up as a shield when there is blow back for their bullshit.

The Progressive Left, Seeing danger, is trying to work a little nuance into the newfound, generally-accepted understanding that all of them are prone to being violent, murderous, intolerant tyrants that believe the only good adversary is a dead one.

Any exchange of ideas by people with differing beliefs, in this new world, is only the prelude to a violent conclusion. It's been pretty much that way since the reelection of the Light Bringer. This story is really just opening a time capsule to show what used to be possible. Nobody believes their bullsh*t has any sincerity to it, anymore. Too bad: It was better that way.

Going by some X threads I've seen today the new talking points are, "who are they?" "This was done by some nut job and has nothing to do with the left." You are all paranoid." "Only a hand full of people celebrated Kirk's murder and they are loons who have nothing to do with the left."

If all that is true then why are groups of antifa trying to disrupt and end memorials to Charlie Kirk?

"Anybody who walked in was welcome in the discussion."

Kirk's final "discussion" was hardly a discussion because he wasn't serious about answering Hunter Kozak's question.

Kozak: “Do you know how many transgender Americans have been mass shooters over the last 10 years?”

Kirk: “Too many.”

Kozak: "The number is five."

Kirk: “Counting or not counting gang violence?”

Kozak knew that trans people are non-violent, and Kirk knew in advance what Hunter's question would be, but he didn't attempt to properly answer it. Five is the only answer. "Gang violence" - give me a break!

The other reaction by Kozak was that when the shot rang out, he knew he was witnessing an assassination that did not threaten his own life. That makes him a perfect witness for Robinson's defense against aggravated murder since no one else was being fired upon except Kirk.

Ron Winkleheimer said...

So transgenders aren't particularly violent, just leftists in general?

Ron Winkleheimer said...

I read the linked article, Robinson ruined Kozak's life.

Leland said...

Why was more than one round engraved? Who were they for? Why are you suggesting that Kozak was "in the know"? Kozak said his entire point to Kirk was that the left was not as violent as Kirk made them out to be, and then Robinson killed Kirk proving Kirk was right.

How many times do you think you can opine on subjects that you know nothing about?

Right about the time I retired, I was biking in a Big Ten city and happened across some old gents (and one or two ladies). They were having coffee out on the sidewalk, and we dropped into conversation. I enjoyed it, and the rest of that summer I made it a point to look for them every time I was walking or biking in town. I called them "my coffee guys".

I came back the next summer, and joined in again. I began to be a bit of a seasonal fixture. I looked forward to it, and I went so far as to look for similar groups as I went to various cities (we were a bit nomadic at that time). I found one group in my Florida home, but they were not nearly as lively. (I've since foun d a great group to visit on my bike a few times a week in the winter.)

These groups are filled with all sides of the political spectrum, even one commie and definitely a couple of bleeding hearts. It is probably obvious I am right of center, but I keep it factual and civil and don't press my opinions, and there is no problem.

I'm looking for a group in Wisconsin where I go; no such luck yet. But every time I'm back in that first city, I go back to my original "coffee guys" and have a blast.

Its the people on the left that named it consequence culture.

"Ron, confirming that you and the majority of conservatives have been swallowed up by an extremest, nihilistic cult, isn’t the own you think it is."

All I know that about 20% (I don't think its 50%) of the US population want to kill me. Anyway, how about arguing the points instead of just throwing out ad hominins?

For instance:
NATO was formed shortly after WWII to contain the Soviet Union, which collapsed in 1991. We are now one quarter of the way through the 21st century. Russia is now a regional power, at best. What benefits does NATO confer on the US right now. Why is the US responsible for guaranteeing Europe's current borders? Shouldn't the European's be doing that?

Ron Winkleheimer said...

I think I can at least partially explain why the US continues to belong to NATO:

There is an old story (probably apocryphal) about researchers hanging a banana from the top of a large cage with a ladder next to it. They then put in a group of chimps. When one of the chimps tried to climb the ladder to get the banana the entire group would be sprayed with a fire hose. Pretty soon the chimps learned not to try to retrieve the banana. The researchers then removed one of the original group and replaced it. The replacement chimp saw the banana and went to get it and was stopped violently by the other chimps. One by one the original group was replaced and the replacement chimp was taught not to try to retrieve the banana until none of the original group was left, and none of the new chimps tried to eat the banana.

And Trump isn't even advocating leaving NATO. He just wants them to pay what they promised to maintain it.

The answer is wrong because there should have been ten shootings before there were too many? And pardon me, but how did Kozak know he wasn't going to be shot? He's standing right there close to what became the kill zone. How did he know that more bullets weren't coming? I'm not implying that Kozak had any knowledge of what Robinson was going to do. But from my military training when you are in a kill zone you don't "know" that a stray won't get you.

If you believe in that sort of thing, there are 5 stages of grief:

- Denial
- Anger
- Bargaining
- Depression
- Acceptance

This is a disaster for the political left. They know it's a disaster. They're not scared. They're terrified. The leaders among them know exactly what this event can and will precipitate. What it will reveal...drip drip drip, over weeks, months, and years during an administration that still has 3 of them left to decide what it wants to do with that information.

You're getting denial, anger, and bargaining all at once. Depression really shouldnt be included because most of them are already chronically depressed SSRI junkies and medical data proves it. Acceptance will never come because that will require them to acknowledge something far worse than being wrong, it will require acknowledgement of ideologicial failure and complicity....which is political suicide.

Kirk's death has the potential to become an ideological Extinction Level Event (ELE) for leftism globally, precisely because it is coordinated globally, and has until recently been coordinated and financed mostly with your own money.

Trying to disown the shooter is useless when literally hundreds of thousands of acolytes praised, in unison, his victim's death. They own him, his stink hung like a corpse flower around their necks forevermore.

9/10 will be remembered like its sister date as a date that changed everything. They're prey now, and all I can say is "happy hunting".

From PJ Media:

Back in June, the House unanimously passed a resolution without a single objection honoring Minnesota House Democrat Leader Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark after they were tragically killed, while also condemning political violence. Every Republican joined in. Not one raised a protest, not one quibbled over wording. But when the shoe was on the other foot, when it came time to honor Charlie Kirk and condemn political violence, 96 Democrats couldn’t bring themselves to return the same measure of respect.

even the most milquetoast person who voted for Trump

I'll add this, for longtime fans of the blog: I've said that my brother- and sister-in-law aren't speaking to us, post-election. Two things about that.

1. My MIL, who absolutely can't stand Trump (because of his vulgar affect - she is not especially tuned in to economic or foreign policy), is WAY harsher on illegal immigration than we are. (I might add that Melania Trump's Christmas decoration scheme for the White House during Trump 1 was right up her aesthetic alley, but I doubt she ever saw it, because she gets her news, to the extent she gets any at all, secondhand through her husband's MSNBC habit).

2. We just heard from said MIL that the BIL and SIL consider themselves victims, somehow, in this feud. We don't understand this reasoning. We have and can produce every communication among us at the time - we were critical of their position but civil. But they claim we were profane and abusive. My MIL has seen the texts. However - claiming victimhood, it seems, gives them personal moral cover for their decision to make this the hill to break the family on.

It's way easier to justify your position when you see yourself as the victim.

Tell me, Hag, what makes you think that what you describe is what I support?

And when you're done, tell me what you mean by "random," because I didn't think you're using that word the way normal people use that word. And then define "disappearing," when we know where everyone is. Have you heard of El Salvador? Nicaragua?

My MIL wants every single illegal alien deported. Every one. No matter how long they've been here, no matter the conditions of their illegal entry. And she votes very reliably Democrat - as in, has never voted Republican.
