Once more, I am the only martyr..."

"... in late night."

I would have advised Steven Colbert against using the word "martyr."

It is — at least for some of us — too evocative of the loss of Charlie Kirk. Why wouldn't you notice? Or did you notice and intend to make sport of it?

The OED has this as the oldest meaning of the English word "martyr": "A person who chooses to suffer death rather than renounce faith in Christ or obedience to his teachings, a Christian way of life, or adherence to a law or tenet of the Church; (also) a person who chooses to suffer death rather than renounce the beliefs or tenets of a particular Christian denomination, sect, etc." And : "In extended (esp. non-religious) contexts: a person who undergoes death or great suffering for a faith, belief, or cause, or (usually with to; also with of, for) through devotion to some object."

"Martyr" is also used "Hyperbolically or humorously. A person who suffers, or behaves as if suffering, acute or extended pain, unhappiness, emotional torment, etc.; a constant sufferer (to an ailment, etc.)." Alexander Pope called someone "a Martyr to obesity." So it's not as though Colbert is misusing the word. He's just using it in the jocose sense too close to something that seems to deserve the original and very serious meaning.

ADDED: Am I being hypocritical? Yesterday, when I saw the reinstatement of Kimmel, I said: "Good! Glad to hear it. Un-martyr the man and put him back in the position that fits him, an ordinary host of a old-fashioned late-night show who might occasionally say something in slightly poor taste."

He’s making a sport of it. Liberals/progressives/socialists/communists ALWAYS diminish the “others”. Stop giving them the potential for good. They are not capable of that.

Kimmel doubles-down . Now that is funny. Moron, please.

He’s making a progressive comparison: A progressive not being on TV for a few days is in their minds equal to (or worse) the death of a religious conservative.

That can be fixed in a jiffy!

Kimmel will return to the air tonight with a monologue that doubles down on his blunt anti-MAGA, disdain of Kirk message. Watch for the resulting aftershock in the media tomorrow.
Nexstar and Sinclair (responsible for about 1/4 of his audience) will look justified in pulling the show from their affiliates; pressure will arise for other affiliates to pull it as well. Kimmel's abysmal ratings will plunge further. For Disney/ABC the PR and economics mess gets worse. Poor Bob Iger. This is the way it should have played out before Carr got involved.

What's the saying ? "pass the popcorn"

The departure of Jimmy Kimmel evoked more upset among Democrats than the murder of Charlie Kirk. That is illustrative of their level of decency. A good thing to remember Roseann and Gina Carano might say.

Having the Democrat’s hateful death-cult “comedians” back on the air is a good thing. It serves as a constant reminder to normal people of how deranged the left has become.

And the Left claims Trump is a narcissist.

They can't help it now. They like letting their fascist flag fly! They feel that they must be as obnoxious and menacing as they can toward middle America because they know their time is short, the end is near, and their brand of propaganda is going the way of the dinosaurs.

Buh bye losers! Try and take those networks down with you on the way out.

rehajm said...

The sense of entitlement that they belong on the air losing millions...mind boggling. It makes more sense when you presume Colbert understands he's a propagandist not an entertainer. Wha! Why is Kimmel's propaganda more important than mine?

Gutfled last night. Excellent monologue.

One would like to think that losing your father and two brothers to a plane crash would make Colbert more sensitive to the suffering of others who lost loved ones horribly and unexpectedly.

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

Except, dear Tina, he is a psychopath. Like many in Hollywood.

ON AIR, Colbert referred to President Trump as "Putin's cock holster". How can anyone be surprised at any vile thing he pukes out to his trained seals? How can anyone listen to him for anything?

Kimmel is a vile lying Antifa piece of shit.
I hope Disney gets some major comeuppance.

It's also a homophobic insult. The only reason he got away with it was Trump is the target. Just like it's okay to joke about raping conservative women. It's all about having the right target. Even "toxic masculinity" is good as long as the toxic man is murdering a healthcare CEO in cold blood.

Nobody gets to call themselves a martyr, that label is reserved for other people to give you. And if someone calls you a martyr while you're still alive, it's not a compliment.

Kimmel is coming back to his job.

(checks notes)

Looks like Charlie Kirk is still dead.

Screw them. Sideways. Until the end of time.

Plus 10 years.

Peachy said...

Again - the democratic hollywood democratic left are so full of themselves. Self-important fuckheads - all.

Kimmel lost 3/4 of the audience he was handed in just 10 years. No responsible business would continue to pay someone who is that poor at their primary job. The left does not understand business, capitalism, merit, or competence. They believe in making making money via political power, and that's the only reason Kimmel still has a job.

buwaya said...

"martyr" comes from Greek, and is present, I think, in all European languages, with slightly different spellings.

bagoh20 said...

"We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it."

To be fair, he only got one word wrong. Change "MAGA" to "Democrat" and he was spot on.

Thanks Peachy for the link. That was outstanding.

And even that is losing steam to streaming.

@bennyjohnson
MASSIVE BREAKING: NEXSTAR joins Sinclair in pulling Jimmy Kimmel off air tonight after his lies about Charlie Kirk’s assassination:

“We made a decision last week to preempt “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” following what ABC referred to as Mr. Kimmel’s “ill-timed and insensitive” comments at a critical time in our national discourse. We stand by that decision pending assurance that all parties are committed to fostering an environment of respectful, constructive dialogue in the markets we serve. In the meantime, we note that “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” will be available nationwide on multiple Disney-owned streaming products, while our stations will focus on continuing to produce local news and other programming relevant to their respective markets.”

This move will keep Jimmy Kimmel’s lies out of +100 million American households.

He's been on TEN years? Really, that is an extended tenure for most programs. I truly, as in literally (the way it's meant to be used), am surprised to see he's been at that show so long. It really is weird what progressive Hollywood is willing to lose money doing. There must be something other than clicks for his TikTok hits that keeps him employed.

The company that employs that cuck holster lost $40 million on his "comedy" show.
I don't need a talk show host to perfectly align with my politics for me to watch, but you have to bring something of value besides your hate you spew 5 days a week. It's like State run comedy for dummies.

RideSpaceMountain said...

"It's like State run comedy for dummies."

Very reminiscent of an old soviet joke about them only having two state-run channels on TV. Channel one is a comedy, and they're both tragedies.

Of course that use was intentional. How many guys write for him?

By the way, get ready for the onslaught of "that memorial service was so weird, Christians are so weird or at least hypocritical" as we get further from Charlie's death. Colbert accused his employer of engaging in bribery. On TV! I believe that is grounds for immediate termination, for cause, contract voided. Instead he gets nine-months notice. Martyrdom!
