"If all this comes to pass, it will cement [Bari] Weiss as a key figure in shaping the national news environment, just five years after her much publicized resignation from the New York Times..."
"... over what she characterized as a censorious and hostile workplace. This came in the wake of the resignation of the editorial page editor, James Bennet, after a staff uproar over the publication of Senator Tom Cotton’s opinion piece calling for military intervention against Black Lives Matter protesters.... If Paramount’s acquisition of the Free Press goes through, Weiss will probably be in a position to recruit a network of snitches and rightwing thought police, both from within existing CBS staff and from her own publication, ensconced throughout one of the four largest US media conglomerates. CBS staffers are reportedly 'apoplectic' at the news of her impending role.... When Trump first ran for office, Weiss positioned herself as a 'Never Trumper'.... [Later] she saw the left’s 'overzealous, out-of-touch, hysterical reaction to him' as 'extraordinarily authoritarian and totalitarian in its impulses'.... ... Trump could never operate in the kinds of spaces where Weiss has been able to flourish.... [S]he is uniquely well-suited to champion the prerogatives of those in academia, media, publishing and similar sectors who feel threatened by progressive social movements."

There are exactly zero right-wing employees of CBS ... snitches or otherwise.
You could spend a lot of productive time unpacking that word "snitch."
The far more interesting news is that Larry Ellison and his brother are going to buy CNN and shut it down.
"Everybody knows that we defined 'news' as 'what we think we need you to believe in order for us to get what we want.' and we would have gotten away with it, if it hadn't have been for those snitches!"
"What a world! What a world!"
Woke people: The first step to resolving your cognitive dissonance is to admit you are participating in a religion. It'll bring you mental peace if you reinvent the afterlife, as that'll help with the frustrating stuff that you cannot change.
Pretty rich of the Guardian to be writing about “thought police” considering what is happening in the UK with actual police. Nobody has been arrested in the US, even under Merrick Garland, for silently praying outside an abortion clinic, but one was in the UK.
It seems to be increasingly obvious that the business side of the media leviathan is asserting itself, now that the gravy train has dried up from a US A.I.D. torrent to a mere Sorosian trickle. There are quarterly results to announce, and the results haven't been pleasing the investors, and are not forecast to improve according to the current projections. A course change coming?
The Guardian is dishonest. Weiss is a liberal, under both the classic and the contemporary ideological meanings of the term.
The pendulum is going to swing back hard.
The only question is how much damage the socialist left will do as they lash out while they fall.
The general stream of history is going the right direction.
Oh no! We demand all media be Pro-Hamas and Pro-Democrat party - all the time.
The very term "snitches" indicates that these people considered themselves "thought police" and they consider it a proud service to their cause.
The [old] Guard[jan] is apoplectic that progressive/monotonic liberal/divergent movements will be subject to public scrutiny without a veil of obfuscation and published handmade tales.
The Guardian!! Haw-haw-haw! I wonder what the New Republic and the Spartacist have to say.
Weiss will probably be in a position to recruit a network of snitches and rightwing thought police...
So if someone Bari Weiss hired told a CBS News staffer; you can't have a certain person on the show (or quote, or profile, etc.) because they believe that is OK to rape children, that person is "right wing thought police"?
Kind of amazing (eye-rollingly so)that those who champion "non-binary" people when it comes to gender issues tend to be 100% binary the rest of the time.
Russia collusion was really about Press collusion all along.
As neither the left nor the right really claim her, she’s perfect to run a news organization.
If you are not expressly, oath swearing anti-Trumper, it means you are a Trump lover. These people are certifiably insane.
How long before there is a torrent of hit pieces on Weiss, along with one continuous incantation that she is worse than Hitler? I’m already literally trembling with fear.
This is an internal battle between Weiss and the other leftie baddies. They’re trying to pre-intimidate Weiss to continue what CBS was doing…and it wasn’t journalism…
The number of people/institutions they can cancel is finite…
Forget it Jake--it's just the Guardian. Best to avert one's eyes and nose from the sort of odorous piffle that fills its pages.
I've been reading articles on The FP, and listening to their podcasts, ever since Bari Weiss started the organization. While I don't believe Ms. Weiss is any near as right wing as The Guardian would have us believe, she has also seen the results of the hard left journalism environment that is the NT Editorial department.
However, if she gets a powerful voice at CBS news, she cannot be any worse than what's already in place.
This is typical of lefties demonizing an apostate from their insane agenda. Weiss’s departure into the world of rational thinking is unforgivable, especially her support for Israel.
The idea of stubbornly "liberal" Weiss assembling a "right wing" anything is farfetched and fanciful. You would have to NOT read the Free Press at all to say such a thing. She's not a "right" phenomenon. She is simply to the right of the people ruining the NYT, CBS, CNN and etc.
The very term "snitches" indicates that these people considered themselves "thought police" and they consider it a proud service to their cause.
Yes this said WAY more about the writer than the target of his words.
Weiss is poised to become Trump’s ally among media elites
The kindest thing I can say about whoever wrote that is that they’re unfamiliar with Weiss’s body of work and too lazy to acquaint themselves with it. As he or she is writing for The Guardian, it is more likely that the writer is your standard lefty extremist who believes that anyone who disagrees in the tiniest manner with the liberal hive mind must be a hate-filled, hard right wing Trump supporter.
"When Trump first ran for office, Weiss positioned herself as a 'Never Trumper'.... [Later] she saw the left’s 'overzealous, out-of-touch, hysterical reaction to him' as 'extraordinarily authoritarian and totalitarian in its impulses' "
It's too black and white for some people. The author can't fathom how somebody can dislike Trump and yet see that the reaction to him is authoritarian. If one says anything that might sympathize with Trump, they're MAGA. No compromises allowed.
"[Later] she saw the left’s 'overzealous, out-of-touch, hysterical reaction to [Trump]' as 'extraordinarily authoritarian and totalitarian in its impulses'."
As have we all.
Adding to comment above. "But Trump" and "The Jooos"
Weiss is a liberal but she is also a journalist who looks for the truth instead of just pressing a preferred narrative.
Still makes me laugh that Weiss made her name as a free speech advocate and then when people started being locked up and deported because they said something negative about a foreign country she supported it.
If anyone wants a laugh, I encourage you to look up the marble bust of Bari Weiss that Joe Lonsdale (about whom the less said the better) donated to their anti-woke “university” in Austin. Really sums up the whole project. As novelist Jacob Bacharach has put it (better than I could): “none of the defenders of Western civilization have ever encountered it.”
For decades, the left controlled the majority of news organizations, including ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS, the NYT, the Washington Post, and most other newspapers and magazines. They continually criticized Fox because it was the one network that wasn't under their control. There are signs the dam is breaking and the hard-left control of CBS and perhaps CNN will be ended, so the left is losing what little minds they ever had. I'm loving it.
"a network of snitches and rightwing thought police"
Swith "left" for "right" and that is why Weiss left the NYT.
There are signs the dam is breaking and the hard-left control of CBS and perhaps CNN will be ended, so the left is losing what little minds they ever had
…clearly they fear what is happening, which is itself a tell that what they denied for decades was happening happened…
…surprising they don’g take shots at Woodward, who helped them with the playbook in recent years…
Right-wing? Libertarian in the American context.
Weiss & Trump believe in free speech. The Left doesn’t.
a network of snitches and thought police
She's rubber, you're glue. What bounces off her sticks to YOU!
In Tom Cotton's New York Times editorial, he specifically said he WASN'T referring to peaceful "Black Lives Matter protesters" (in the Guardian's phrasing). What he wrote was:
"Some elites have excused this orgy of violence in the spirit of radical chic, calling it an understandable response to the wrongful death of George Floyd. Those excuses are built on a revolting moral equivalence of rioters and looters to peaceful, law-abiding protesters. A majority who seek to protest peacefully shouldn’t be confused with bands of miscreants. But the rioting has nothing to do with George Floyd, whose bereaved relatives have condemned violence."
DEI hires like Weiss have bouncy careers... bounce, bounce, bounce. They never stay anywhere long.
Media "elites". Let's hope she has a better character.
"Weiss will probably be in a position to recruit a network of snitches and rightwing thought police, "
Wow. Projection much? As I keep saying, it's amazing how the far left is constantly predicting that the right will do what the far left has already done. It's like they can't imagine that other people operate in different ways than they do.
Bari Weiss is not "far right." She is a centrist on most things but happens to support Israel. And that makes her a fascist in the eyes of the far left.
The far left has way too much power in the Democrat party and as the months go by, their bad behavior is driving more and more people out of their party. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if California goes red in a few years if this keeps up.
rightwing thought police
It's funny how "thought police" only ever exist on the *other* side of the argument, never on *our* side...
It is possible to criticize something without being "threatened" by it. If you are normal, that is.
