"Every other recent president has said that he saw his role as transcending partisanship at least some of the time, to serve as leader of all Americans..."

"... even those who disagreed with him. George H.W. Bush talked of ushering in a 'kinder and gentler nation.' Mr. Clinton vowed to be the 'repairer of the breach.' The younger Mr. Bush spoke of being 'a uniter, not a divider.' Barack Obama rejected the idea of a red America and blue America, saying there was only 'the United States of America.' Joseph R. Biden Jr. called for ending 'this uncivil war.' None of them succeeded at achieving such lofty aspirations, and each of them to different degrees played the politics of division at times. Politics, after all, is about division — debating big ideas vigorously until one side wins an election or carries the vote in Congress. But none of them practiced the politics of division as ferociously and consistently as Mr. Trump...."

Who is taking an accurate measure of the consistency and ferocity of the divisiveness of the various Presidents?

My prompt to ChatGPT: "What are the most ferociously divisive things Presidents have said in all of American history? Give me a top 10, with just the quotes, not the explanations."

The list:

1. John Adams (1798): “If the people ever let the Democrats rule, the country will be deluged with the floodgates of immorality.”

2. Andrew Jackson (1834): “The Bank is trying to kill me, but I will kill it! … They would destroy our institutions and corrupt our free government.”

3. Abraham Lincoln (1860 campaign): “You cannot be for slavery and for freedom. The two are incompatible; the one must perish.”

4. Grover Cleveland (1888): “Party success means party loyalty, and party loyalty means hostility to the enemy.”

5. Franklin D. Roosevelt (1936): “Never before in all our history have these forces been so united against one candidate as they stand today. They are unanimous in their hate for me — and I welcome their hatred.”

6. Harry Truman (1948 campaign): “The Republicans … have begun to nail the American consumer to the wall with spikes of greed.”

7. Lyndon B. Johnson (1964): “The Republican Party feeds a fox every night to harass the nation’s chickens.”

8. Richard Nixon (1972): “The press is the enemy. The professors are the enemy. The establishment is the enemy. The enemies must be understood.”

9. George W. Bush (2001): “You are either with us, or you are with the terrorists.”

10. Donald Trump (2020): “The radical left is trying to destroy our country. If they win, America will be a socialist hellhole.”

ADDED: That was the ChatGPT list. I'd written Grok before, because I actually asked Grok first, but it was taking so long that I brought ChatGPT into the search. Eventually, Grok came through, but its first effort was all about racial division, such as Woodrow Wilson saying "Segregation is not a humiliation but a benefit, and ought to be so regarded by you gentlemen" and Lincoln's "I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races." I got more specific and Grok made a list that had things on it that weren't even ferocious, like "The trouble with our liberal friends is not that they're ignorant; it's just that they know so much that isn't so" (Ronald Reagan).  So that's it for Grok on this little project.

Another way of saying the same thing is ‘only Trump could and has gone toe to toe with the Democrats’. I just had an interesting discussion with Grok. Here are the prompts:

What are the most ferociously divisive things Presidents have said in all of American history?
-----------------------------
how come you did not include Joe bidens remarks that maga republicans were a threat to the foundations of our democracy?
-----------------------------
how can you ignore Biden's remark in the aftermath of Charlie Kirk's assassination and the 2 attempts to assassinate Trump?
-----------------------------
why do you refuse to connect Biden's speech to leftists trying to kill Trump and killing kirk because Biden called them threats to the republic?
-----------------------------
You say [I quoted grok back to itself]

"Evidence Against Direct Link: The suspect, Tyler Robinson (a 22-year-old from a Republican family, radicalized online with possible Groyper ties), criticized Kirk as "full of hate" but showed no clear leftist ideology or reference to Biden's speech."

but all evidence points to Tyler Robinson being a radical leftist who lived with his trans partner and referred to trump as a fascist,

how do you reach this conclusion?

The response:
"I'll break down how I reached my initial conclusion, why it needs updating, the current evidence (drawing from official statements, affidavits, and credible reporting), and how this fits into the broader context of our discussion on political violence, phenomenology, and ideology. My goal is truth-seeking: conclusions must evolve with evidence, not speculation."

The only thing you are missing is that it is more like 60/40 and the 60% has far more guns.

In these situations it always ends up 80/20 and this is a historical norm. That is just how social contracts are formed.

The mainstream media is already spinning the transvestite lover as some sort of hero in all this - instead of his true role as a co-conspirator.

Daily Mail: "Discord messages sent by the alleged killer, who was listed as 'Tyler', reportedly mentioned how he had wrapped his rifle in a towel and stashed it in some bushes near Utah Valley University, where Kirk was shot. The messages helped investigators find and arrest Robinson for the assassination.

This is PATENTLY false. Neither the FBI, nor local police "found" Robinson and arrested him. His father drove him to a police station and turned him in. The FBI couldn't find its own ass if it tried.

Now I'll give the Daily Mail some credit. They at least reported that the FBI tried to hide the transvestite's identity from the American people.

"For more, or if you haven't already had my message pounded into you enough, read the book I wrote with my wife, 'The Divider: Trump in the White House, 2017-2021' ..."

Obama spoke about no red states or blue states when he was running for president, not after he had secured the office. Whether or not he was an active divider as president, he wasn't an active uniter, and that 2004 statement isn't representative of his rhetoric as president.

I think we pretty clearly have Biden's "Triumph of the Will" speech in Philadelphia as an example of presidential speechifying that is more divisive than Trump's. Biden's vice presidential "Gonna put you all back in chains" was an example of where we were going with Biden. Harry Truman's rhetoric when he was concerned about losing the election was another example of divisive rhetoric, and it worked. And of course, there were the early days of the republic with the fights between Adams and Jefferson. Jefferson was a very divisive character during his rise to the presidency. If he's not on AI's list, it may be because he was too timid to speak much in public.

I'm reminded of the early 1970s. There was a lot of "divisive" talk back then, but Nixon could count on most Democrats not being on the side of the radicals. Trump can't. That accounts for the difference in their rhetoric. I'm also reminded of the aftermath of Charlottesville, when President Trump commented that there were "very fine people" on both sides of the Confederate statues conflict -- explicitly excluding neo-Nazis. How did that effort to bind the nation's wounds work out for DJT?

It's a good idea for every incoming president to give a rhetorical shot across the bow to the media, pointing out that they aren't what they've come to believe they are. That's going to ensure a lot of bad press, but the country thrives on an opposition between presidents and the press (at least until bureaucrats join up with the press to successfully take down a president).

So we are not allowed to notice when elections are obviously rigged? Why is that Federal Judge in Georgia keeping that 140K tranche of ballots from being inspected?

Why did Colorado pass a law making validating the results of an election a crime?

Why wasn't Arizona open and forthcoming about their procedures when plainly, somebody changed the printer settings just prior to Election Day in heavily Republican districts to make their ballots look right, but unreadable by the machines, for example.

Straightforward answers to these questions and some sunshine in the vote count would go along way, but I'm sorry, you did explain it, you said "shut up."

A member of the New Orleans Fire Department allegedly posted that the bullet that hit Kirk was “a gift from god.” The department said the comment was “insensitive” and under investigation.

A Texas football coach (also a teacher) in Klein ISD was fired for social media posts about Kirk’s killing that were judged “controversial” by the district.

A teacher in Midland Independent School District in Texas was placed on administrative leave for remarks in class about Kirk’s death, which appeared to celebrate it.

No, he should use a neutron bomb. Such a bomb kills the people, but leaves the infrastructure for plundering. It emits high levels of neutron radiation, which essentially microwaves the people to death, but doesn't knock any buildings down or destroy all the valuable cars and stuff.

We've had this technology since 1960 and spent a lot of US taxpayer dollars creating the bomb.

Trump just needs to dust some off. He could unite the country by eliminating the bad half and leaving all their houses and stuff for the rest of us to use.

Solves the housing crisis. Solves the homeless crisis. Solves the drug crisis.

It's really the best all-in-one solution there is. And I'm already on Truth Social pinging him with this idea. It's really cool to be able to talk to Trump directly and then wait a few days and watch my words start coming out of his mouth on Fox & Friends.

Obama et al affirmatively divided Americans. Trump rhetorically divided, and actively united Americans. Automatons decode and present prevailing handmade tales for consumption by Anthropogenic Intelligence (AI). It's like an episode of The Outer Limits set in The Matrix.

Yes, anything short of rounding people up and disapearing them with no process is not enforcing immigration laws.

It's not. The claim is we live in a democracy. Perhaps they are correct.

”Funny. No mention of Biden calling half the country a threat to democracy.”

One must keep in mind the criteria Althouse provided to the AI engine. ChatGPT never mentioned Biden because it operates on the assumption that Joe Biden was never POTUS.

Except they are going through a process. That is why the Florida Alcatraz existed. It was holding until processing could be completed and extradition occurred. You know about it, so it isn’t “disappearing” them either.

Not satisfied to live in a democracy, with progress, a DEImocracy that entertains abortive ideation to protect its selfie virtue, special and peculiar interests, and other purposes.
History reverberates in a catastrophic cacophony.

I find it fascinating that Adams's quote is as accurate today as it was 227 years ago. Dude was a visionary.

Our goal should not be unity under ethical principles, but reconciliation under moral principles. It should not be democracy, but a representative republic under a Constitution that mitigates authoritarian, Diversity, congruent, redistributive progress.

FLC. -Trump gets his talking points from you? That explains so much. Thanks!

"anything short of rounding people up and disapearing them with no process"

So they are being deported "unless they claim asylum and pass an interview with a U.S. asylum officer" per CBS News, and this is claimed to be "without due process." And yet of the hundreds of thousands of undocumented Democrats, err, I mean deportees, only seven are known to have turned out to be US citizens, oh wait, not deported, but detained. Lot's of people not proven guilty of crimes get detained on suspicion of this or that, but that doesn't seem like a huge number.

So I guess you are saying that unless this process can achieve absolution perfection, we should abolish immigration laws.

TeaBagHag said...

Ok, that’s irrefutable logic. I know where Auschwitz is, therefore nothing horrible or morally reprehensible happened there.

Jaq said...

So you area calling the people enforcing Congress's immigration laws Nazis and comparing sending them home to sending them to Auschwitz, but not calling for the measures that, were these things you say are true would be called for, such as violent resistance.

Got it.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox has been a valuable public voice, addressing the situation with clarity and composure, aiming to promote reconciliation. This stands in stark contrast to Trump's approach.

/Cox said that social media has played a “direct role” in fueling political violence in the US, as the country grapples with the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at a college in the state last week.

“I believe that social media has played a direct role in every single assassination and assassination attempt that we have seen over the last five, six years,” Cox said on Sunday.

Cox, a Republican, has spoken out strongly against social media companies in the wake of the killing and has likened the addictive nature of their algorithms to drugs. “It took us a decade to realise how evil these algorithms are,” he said./ ~ FT

Lincoln 1858
"A house divided against itself cannot stand. ...This nation connot continue to exist half slave and half free."

Based on these quotes, I think Lincoln was the most divisive President ever while he is also the President who held the Union together even as he resolved the slavery issue.

I think we now have a dispute about whether socialism can or cannot achieve economic justice in a society if it is allowed a completely free hand. Those who have observed the actual effects of socialism since 1917 are clear that socialism is government of the people, by the grifters, for the grifters and that it always involves murder, torture, arrest and banning of free speakers. We see it behaving in its familiar way. On the other hand, those young chuckleheads who move phone in hand through a digital dream imagine that 21st century socialism will be like an Amazon series; that they'll just watch as the evil are detected, outsmarted and punished and then the series gets a million likes and send out for pizza. Older grifters circle about these tourists of their own time abducting sons and daughters and forming them into armies of the enslaved, human robo-killers, zombie teachers, mutilated men and women who show off their mutilations as if they were diamonds, armies of the petty who spend their short human lives on spite and malice and applause for any murders committed on any lefty pretext.

How will it all end? A Great Awakening?

The Adams quote has the look of an AI hallucination. He did not have a reputation for the sort of verbal incompetence which could produce such a botchery as "deluged with the floodgates of immorality".

To be clear, I’m calling masked men detaining brown people and jettisoning them off to random nations to which they have no affiliation to be acting in an authoritarian and cruel manner and yes, it’s fascism.
I’m calling the people who cheer it on, MAGAts.
When someone reads this a loud to you, I hope you understand.
