"Assata Shakur, the Black revolutionary once known as JoAnne Chesimard... died on Thursday in Havana. She was 78...."

"Assata Shakur was both lionized and demonized long after she and the Black Liberation Army, the militant group she had embraced, faded from broad public consciousness. To supporters she was a tireless battler against racial oppression. To detractors she was a stone-cold cop killer, the first woman to land on the F.B.I.’s 'most wanted terrorists' list, with $2 million in state and federal money offered for her capture. For her part, Ms. Shakur regarded herself as 'a 20th-century escaped slave.'..."

In 1987, Ms. Shakur published an autobiography, “Assata,” a name she had assumed in 1971, forsaking what she called her “slave name.” The book was replete with spellings and locutions that were standard in radical circles, like references to America as “amerika” and to the police as “pigs.” She routinely used a lowercase “i” as a first-person pronoun — to “take away from the egotistical connotation of the word,” she said.

As for her name, she wrote: “It sounded so strange when people called me JoAnne. It really had nothing to do with me. I didn’t feel like no JoAnne, or no negro, or no amerikan. I felt like an African woman.”

ADDED: Does anyone feel like a JoAnne?

Gee, glad to know she wasn't egotistical.

It is interesting that some of the left's high profile heroes are dying.

She was also Tupac's auntie. CC, JSM

So who was "lionizing" the Cop killer? The readers of the NYTs?

Dr Weevil said...

She didn't feel like no JoAnne. She felt like an Assata, which is pronounced very much like AssHat-Uh.

She felt like an "African". So why didn't she go there? Lots of opporturnity in Africa, especially Liberia in the 70s for black Americans. But she stayed here. And murdered people.

But she did get "Lionized". Wonder what would've happened if she'd killed a Jewish Lawyer. Would she still be "Lionized"?

She became a propaganda asset for the USSR. An "agent of influence". On the wrong (wrong in so many ways) of the last great geopolitical struggle of the 20th century. Good riddance.

Nothing screams "no ego" like writing an autobiography.

She lived to 78, so wasn’t worked to death in the sugar cane fields with the rest of the proletariat. It’s good to be a member of the nomenclatura!

In 1972, in the midst of committing armed robberies and killings, Assata Shakur ordered her gang to kill several of the new bi-racial police partners intended to improve race relations in NYC, and she participated directly in one of the killings. They brutally murdered officers Piagenti and Jones and Foster and Laurie. There are some good, old-fashioned beat reporter books written about these vile acts. Previously her gang had fled to Georgia, where they robbed a bank and shot someone in Metter. They relocated to Atlanta in 1971, where Assata ordered the hit of the "first white cop they could find." A few blocks from where she was hiding, at the intersection of Memorial and Boulevard, a block from where I later lived, her gang found young Officer James R Greene eating breakfast. They lured him, pretending to seek directions and murdered him. They were still shooting and firebombing police in 1981, when they shot Officer Rainer and killed Officer Scarangella. Then Shakur escaped prison with the help of Weatherwomen and the BLA and fled to Cuba. Many politicians, the FBI, and police lobbied President Obama to make it a requirement of normalizing relations with Cuba to send Shakur back to the U.S. to face several police-assassination charges, but he disgustingly refused to do it, and his close friend Common dedicated songs to her. President Trump rescinded normalized relations with Cuba until Shakur was extradited. She lived in luxury in Cuba, funded by the government, and she is an international hero. In America, her picture hangs in many women's and black study department offices on a popular poster of female heroes, and many university buildings have been named for her. I lived for years blocks from where Officer Green was murdered and repeatedly lobbied my Congressman, John Lewis, to erect an historical marker commemorating the asassinated young officer. He ignored me, even though I had done volunteer constituent services for his district whenever called upon for help.

Slave to who? Slave to what? I find it interesting that these murderous leftist radicals rate halos and hagiographies while having nothing but hate for their country and either exile or prison time to show for it. NYT showing their colors, as usual.

A liberal combination of rabid DEIsm and affirmative abortive ideation following progressive principles. Edgy, and smart. A model of left-wing culture.

It's just as well, that c*** died in Cuba, bc if the US had ever been able to get her back there's no doubt in my mind at all that some radical New York governor would have given her a full and unconditional pardon for the cop killing. There's no justice available in this fallen world especially NY. Rot in hell Chesimard.

Rcocean, see my comment above. The Atlanta Fulton County Library System just honored her, but they pulled the memorial offline five minutes ago. Shut your nasty anti-semitic piehole.

@RCO. Is there one key on your keyboard when you hit it prints the word “Jew”? When you shave, does the word “Jew” appear in the mirror?

And, Ms Shakur, please tell us what percentage of the Cuban population is black? And what percentage of the members of the Cuban Communist Party are black?

The vile bitch went from one society she thought racist to another one that was and is even more racist, but, hey, they were fellow commies and gave her sanctuary so she kept her mouth shut. May she rot in Hell.

She escaped justice in the U.S., but perhaps having to live the rest of her life in Cuba was another sort of punishment.

"To supporters she was a tireless battler against racial oppression."

One might say that murdering someone because of the color of their skin is the ultimate in "racial oppression".

Progressives sure seem to love cop killers.

Jesus wasn't just a Jew. He was a the Son of the God and founder of the Christian religion. He isn't in the same category as the Rabbi that owns porn hub or Harvey Weinstein. People keep using the words to cover a lot of things and lot of people that aren't similar. Its a label game.

Anyway, that's irrelevent. God says the way to salvation is through Jesus Christ. Those who reject him aren't our "religious elders". That was the Christian position for 1900 years.
