School shootings are an extremely complex issue that gets reduced to absurd simplistic solutions for political purposes. Dems are pushing bans on high capacity semi-auto rifles, but that won’t prevent shit because a disturbed person can do as much damage with pistols - see Virginia Tech shooting. A complete gun ban isn’t going to happen because of the second amendment, and wouldn’t work anyway because it is impossible to remove all the legal guns in this country short of turning the US into a military dictatorship - going door to door and searching for every weapon.
Republicans have a more reasoned view, the problem is sick individuals who are willing to carry out mass killings. This problem has no easy solutions so Republicans are branded as do nothings or ignoring the issue. Even if you were able to remove all guns from the US, there are other ways to carry out mass killings that a sick fuck could resort to - see Bath School disaster.

RFK JR. is right about the need to get a handle on SSRI's and other psych drugs and their effects on young people. Also cannabis' effect on the young should be more comprehensively studied (although I seriously doubt that the US government will accomplish anything positive in this area).

I have a vague memory of Obama saying after a mass shooting stateside that these things didn't happen overseas. It was shortly after a mass killing in France, and there was some murmuring about it from Europeans. Norway, Russia, New Zealand, Switzerland. Things like this happen around the world. They do seem more like isolated instances, while here they are (or are presented as being) something more than that.
But I guess RFK Jr. grew up hearing "only in America" a lot in reference to gun violence.

I’ve already pointed out the starting point: stop treating RFK Jr. as if he’s offering serious solutions. When the conversation gets diverted to SSRIs or transgender meds instead of the obvious drivers of gun violence, we’re not even at the table of honest problem-solving.
From there, the cultural and social factors aren’t mysterious. Other countries have mental illness, antidepressants, violent media, and angry young men — but they don’t have this level of mass shootings. What’s different here is the culture of easy gun access, the political refusal to confront it, and the way figures like Trump and RFK Jr. redirect the discussion to keep their base engaged instead of facing reality. That’s the dogma-and-pony show.
Television, the internet, and the 24 hour news cycle are also recent. 19th century school shootings usually involved students with specific grievances against a teacher -- or less often, a classmate. Stabbings with knives or hitting with stones also happened, maybe more often. There was never a sense that the whole world was watching or that killing many teachers and pupils was a way to fame. There was the occasional boy who pretended to be Jesse James and fired a few shots in the air, but he would only achieve local fame -- if even that.

I never said “just get rid of guns.” I said if we’re serious, we need to stop letting people like RFK Jr. distract us with SSRIs or transgender medicine. Other countries have mental illness, antidepressants, and violent media — but not this level of mass shootings. Apparently school attacks are big in China with people charging groups of kids with their cars. The solution has been lots of bollards around schools. The desire to lash out against the innocent appears to be a human trait. Who knows why it is triggered.

But another toxic influence may be the culture of victimhood that was already dominant in the schools when the Columbine killers acted. Victimhood became their bond and their identity. Kleibold kept a journal for two years imagining revenge against those whom he believed had disregarded him; Harris did the same for a year before the attack. That's a lot of premeditation and mutual reinforcement. It also explains how they have become role models for a variety of other school shooters, especially these recent trans ones, the victims of the moment. Ironically, if they had received real punishment for breaking into a car and stealing computers from it prior to the attack, their parents and officials may have learned of their plans, which they recorded in detail. Instead, they were put in "positive" diversion programs, praised for their progress, and returned to planning their massacre. They also somehow lacked parental supervision: they made scores of bombs in their garages, making enough noise to bother neighbors. The parents didn't notice?

We already have gun control. What we don't have is reasonable control of the mentally ill.
Victoria: your statistic conflates two types of school shootings. The vast majority of mass school shootings, defined as three or more victims, are gang-related fights on school property. That's really a different category of crime. Trans-identifying people are now more than a statistical blip among the type of school shooting discussed here.
Our youngest talks with me about this all the time. He's mid 30s and notes what a tremendous percentage of his male friends have been on drugs for decades. He likens it to the lobotomy treatments of days gone by. These have side effect warnings that should scare you to death. Toss in today's skyrocketing diagnoses or autism, depression and other ailments... routinely "handled" by the try this pill method of medical advice. Now add the numbers of young men routinely smoking today's super pot. Now add, for the Trans community, major league hormone manipulation...
