These (and yesterday's) pictures have been stunners, Althouse. We all want to see one of these, but you have to drag yourself out there with a measure of faith to see the ad from God when it actually drops.

Thanks for doing the work. The sunsets are easier from my venue.

I saw a bald eagle flying overhead, then a little while later, I was sitting on the screen porch and I heard a couple of wing beats coming from high in the oak next door, and a bird big enough to be that eagle drops out of the tree and then there were the squeaks of an excited chipmunk, which I am assuming were its last words. Help yourself to as many as you like, Mr Eagle.

I understand that the MSM noted that the Robin-the-trans-child-killer had written "Trump" on one of his guns. Were the New York Times and Washington Post among them? Because this afternoon I learned that what Robin-the-trans-child-killer actually wrote was "Kill Donald Trump." I think this maybe means he wasn't MAGA.

Do you believe men can become woman and vice versa? If you answer yes- you're mentally ill and should be institutionalized. And therein lies a problem

We now have a SC justice who stated during her confirmation hearings that she's not a biologist and can't define male and female. Or maybe man and woman- immaterial. And- she was CONFIRMED!!! Either she was lying-or she's stupid. (The two aren't mutually exclusive.) If subsequently you have voted for any senator who voted for her confirmation- you're part of the problem. That that answer didn't result in a unanimous rejection of her as a SC justice is a tragedy.

We're all being much too polite in not standing up for common sense. Someone (probably an AWFL) tell you their kid is trans? Don't hem and haw, tell them loudly, especially if others are around- "Your child isn't trans! Your child is mentally ill! And you're enabling it. You're either evil or stupid!" Then walk away from them. Don't even acknowledge it's worth debating- it's not.

The doctors who do operations that they know won't change someone's sex? Every one of them, without exception, no matter how much good they may have done otherwise, is a peer of Dr. Mengele and his Japanese counterpart Shirō Ishii. And need to be told so. Their medical licenses should be revoked. Unfortunately, not possible to jail them without an unconstitutional ex post facto law. Shrinks who encourage the trans movement? Their medical licenses should be suspended- and they should be prohibited from working with any minors in the future.

Did you vote for Tim Walz? You're part of the problem, and should be ashamed of yourself. Gavin Newsom? Same. Any politician who proudly supports the trans community? The same. Sometimes to get rid of a problem- you have to make yourself a one issue voter, regardless of ho much you hate the other guy. As Heinlein said (paraphrased)- sometimes you cannot find a reason to vote for any candidate- but you can always find a reason to vote against someone. Have a reason- and vote AGAINST people.

Doesn't have to be this issue. Want illegal immigrants gone? Vote against anyone fighting for their non-existent right to be here.

Against censorship? Don't vote for people who support it. Which, BTW, is the Democrats (fine/imprison people for misgendering or using the N word- unless they're black) not Republicans (keep pornography out of school libraries- that's not censorship as previous understood).

A lot of people (supposedly according to surveys) are one issue voters on gun control. Some vote against politicians supporting gun control, some vote only for those same politicians. I suspect the former group is larger. And getting larger.

We, as a society, are entirely too polite to people who spout off inanities, and we need to stop.

The brave young Scottish girl who defended her little sister from Muslim sex-pests with an axe and a large knife, resulting in her arrest, now has a GiveSendGo campaign that has raised well over 30,0000 pounds for her legal defense. It's called Justice for Lola and Ruby, and as best I can tell, it seems to be legitimate.

Memes depicting this young lady as Boudica or Joan of Arc are all over social media, and are fomenting a harsh reappraisal of the bizarre British prohibition on self-defense and the desirability of immigration from Third World shitholes. The worthless, wicked Starmer regime is terrified of what it might lead to.

The CDC is in the news because sveral top scientists have quit claiming that an impeccable scientific record is being dragged in the dust by RFK Jr's vaccine investigations. Impeccable record?
The Tuskegee Syphilis Study was led by Raymond Vonderlehr from 1932 to 1943. His next big job was as the first head of the CDC (1947 to 1951) when the CDC was first organized by the combination of several USPHS agencies. We aren't surprised to learn that the CDC, following Vondelehr's lead disregarded the horror of the ongoing "scientific research" on syphilis at Tuskegee. This "scientific research" continued from 1932 to 1972 to harm the men involved and resulted in the spread of syphilis to women whom the men knew and even to several children. Nor did the CDC prevent or criticize the work of John Charles Cutler of the USPHS who led a team in Guatemala (1946-1948) which deliberately infected 1300 people with syphilis, gonorrhea, and chancroid without their consent. This "scientific research" was exposed in 2010 without any assistance from the CDC. (Cutler later worked on the Tuskegee Study and was considered a distinguished leader in public health research until the Guatemalan and Tuskegee research was exposed in 2010.)
ttps://www.bostonreview.net/articles/reverby-our-man-guatemala/#:~:text=Cutler%2C%20a%20physician%20with%20the,and%20gonorrhea%20without%20their%20consent.

As Reverby points out much of the scientific research which our tax dollars pay for is done overseas - sometimes under conditions or in ways which would not be acceptable in the US itself.

As we know, the Wuhan Lab was partially funded by the HHS through NIH and it was doing research banned in the US and doing it under unsafe conditions by US standards.

In short, we count on wonderful medical discoveries from the scientific research we fund but we can also count on researchers who cut corners or exploit vulnerable people for the purposes of their own scientific ambitions. And it's a fact that the scientific establishment at the CDC has a very poor track record in discovering these exploiters. Under RFK Jr. we can hope for some solid scientific studies into the many many vaccines which the CDC is promoting as standard. And we can expect opposition to any such studies.

Opposition is good if the opponents bring forward arguments from science. Maybe not so good if they simply claim "authority" and "expertise" while quitting the battle. Authoritarian science is not science at all. It's fake science, just something the media can enjoy foaming over about for awhile. Raymond Vondelehr smiles.

From Bill Ackman, on X:

On the topic of Fed Governor Lisa Cook, there is a long history of Fed Governors who had relatively minor ethical or legal infractions who resigned in light of the importance of unimpeachable probity for those who serve in this important position.

It is either true or false that Governor Cook misrepresented her primary residence status on one or more mortgage applications. The evidence put forth publicly by
@pulte
strongly suggests that she lied on one or more mortgage applications, in other words, mortgage fraud.

It should be straightforward for Governor Cook to disprove the alleged fraud and it shouldn’t require a team of lawyers and litigation to do so. She just needs to answer a simple question:

Did she or didn’t she sign an affidavit declaring that the subject properties were her primary residences? Yes or no.

Whether President
@realDonaldTrump
has the technical legal authority to terminate Gov Cook is not that relevant in my view. What matters here is whether a Fed governor has committed mortgage fraud or not. It is not a political question. It is a question of fact.

Governor Cook should immediately put forth the facts to clear her name or she should resign in the best interests of the integrity of our financial system. The sooner this occurs, the better for her and our country.

I’m pretty sure Lisa Cook doesn’t much care about this country, but perhaps she should care about her own reputation.

Aggie said...

@Big Mike: "...I’m pretty sure Lisa Cook doesn’t much care about this country, but perhaps she should care about her own reputation. ...."

Her opposition to resigning, and the silence instead of refuting the claims, suggest that all of her reputation is wrapped up in her current assignment, and without that position, she has nothing else to offer.

How is it that people who have been fired by their boss think they can simply choose to remain on, instead? It's the same with this CDC lady. As if that's an option, as if any working relationship is still possible. There seems to be an endemic condition of over-estimating one's worth and importance, also one's authority in the scheme of things.

Instapundit brings up an oldie but a goodie -

https://eastbayexpress.com/rich-black-flunking-1/

John Ogbu was a big deal in the 1990s-early 2000s, in probably the last era when the black-white academic performance gap was honestly evaluated. Its no coincidence that Ogbu was a Nigerian (Ibo/Igbo) academic who was black but separate from American racial tribalism. He concluded that the performance gap was unlikely to be the result of external/input factors, but rather cultural/inherent factors, and so unlikely to be amenable to public policy solutions - of which there was already a decades-long history of failure. This was broadly rejected by the educational establishment.
Ogbu latched on to the very last plausible explanation, other than biological hardware, and even that was unacceptable.

This is, or was, much more significant for American culture than it might seem at first glance. Its not just about K-12 grades or NAEP scores. It was the total failure of academic research to find a solution to that which was presented as THE principal American problem, that created the last two generations of bitter hostility. It, more than anything, prompted the exterminating rage of the intellectual class against the entire US. The US, by not having a solution to what was evidently an intractable fact of nature, deserved utter destruction. The bitterness that Andreessen noted in the post-college generation -

"By 2013, the median newly arrived Harvard kid was like: “[expletive] it. We’re burning the system down. You are all evil. White people are evil. All men are evil. Capitalism is evil. Tech is evil.”
Douthat: But they’re working for you. These are people who are working for you.
Andreessen: Of course. So I had this moment with a senior executive, who I won’t name, but he said to me with a sense of dawning horror, “I think some of these kids are joining the company not with the intent of doing things for us but destroying us.”

The ONE goal that could not be, made an intellectual generation dedicated to total destruction of everything.

Easy:

You see, in 2022, an obscure website named Quartz claimed that Americans will eat 222 pounds of beef in 2018. It cited a USDA estimate (not actual numbers) of food availability in that year. Yahoo News then stole that story so it could sell advertising around it.

It's all just bullshit, wrapped in horseshit designed to do nothing but get you to click on it. Lo and behold, it worked. In that way, a bunch of dumb advertisers were defrauded by a "metric" called "engagement."

They used to call these "ratings" but then computers came along and it became very apparent to advertisers that Nielsen "ratings" were a fancy way of robbing them. So now they get robbed this way.

So, no, Americans don't eat 2.4 hamburgers a day.

Wasn't that easy?

The cops in the UK must be fucking insane.

While walking in their local community. Lola (12), Ruby (13) and Mayah (13) were accosted by two adult foreign nationals. The foreign nationals were directing inappropriate sexual remarks at Lola. When Lola and her sister told the migrants to leave them alone and go away Ruby was viciously attacked by the adult female, yanked to the ground by her hair and both migrants proceeded to kick Ruby in the head on the ground. Seeing her sister being beaten senselessly on the ground, Lola retrieved an axe and a knife and bravely scared off the attackers, saving her sister. This is when the foreign national decided to film the aftermath which went viral on social media. In the video you can hear Lola telling the attackers to go away and leave her sister alone. Ruby was hospitalized after the attack with a severe concussion a tennis ball sized lump to the back of her head as well as lots of bruises. Unfortunately rather than arrest the attackers, the local police decided to arrest Lola instead.

I've seen the video. My reaction upon watching the video, was to wonder why this little girl was carrying around such a large weapon. And why was the man behind the camera mocking her and telling her to show him the knife. What the fuck is going on? That was my reaction to the video.

Now that the video has been placed in context, and we find out what happened before the video was shot, it all makes sense. Her sister was attacked by an adult woman. She ran home to get a weapon. And she chased the attacker off.

Apparently, the UK police believes in disarming citizens and allowing rapes of underage children. How do you miss the injuries to a child, committed by an adult? How do you skip over that and say, "no crime"?

I have zero sympathy for the police in the UK, as they apply their double standard of law. Ignore violent crimes by "migrants," while you tell British people to shut up and get fucked.

The educational establishment is authoritarian in mindset. It has designed a classroom with one authority (the teacher). And there are indoctrination materials. Your job as a student is to memorize what the authority tells you, and regurgitate it for the test.

So that's a big problem with our educational system, in my opinion. I believe in school choice and empowering parents to find the best schools for their children.

Instead of fixing the problem -- the authoritarianism of our education establishment -- they just decided to update the indoctrination materials with an explicitly racist worldview.

Serious question. Why do we fund medical research overseas? Aren’t we competent to do it ourselves? If not, why not.

Enigma said...

@Jersey Fled: "Why do we fund medical research overseas?"

IMO, it's for a few reasons:

1. Work-around for research that's illegal or likely to be politically scrutinized in the US. Consider Wuhan for virus gain-of-function and Ukraine for NATO military applications.

2. The global university culture routinely collaborates and shares resources. See CERN, LIGO, the ISS, and other mega projects. Follow hundreds of years of serious science, useful research today is extremely expensive and the experts are distributed randomly around the world. Most of the cheap and easy wins were accomplished long, long ago.

3. You rub my back and I'll rub yours. Corruption, patronage, dependence, and preserving the in-group hegemony. It's hard to be taken seriously by researchers unless you have a name-brand pedigree. Some researchers are passionate only about tenure and getting their next government grant.

I keep seeing a hummingbird through the big window in front of my desk. I don't know if it's the same hummingbird that keeps returning or different hummingbirds that are always alone, but they are attracted by a small sun-shaped ornament that is hanging from the top of the window, on the inside. Perhaps it looks like a flower to them... or a feeder. Meade told me to take the ornament down, on the theory that it's wrong to confuse them, but I don't know if it's keeping other birds from flying into the window. Birds do fly into the other windows from time to time.
