In the big cities, it is mostly black people being murdered and robbed by other black people. Someone, Steve Sailer I think, pointed out that 95% of the murdered people in D.C. were black. If I were Trump, I would have the National Guard patrol heavily the areas where these murders occur for 1-3 months and see what happens to the murder rate.
"They'll gravitate to the person that appears to be doing something about it..."
Some might even suggest that having the National Guard and the FBI appear on location is actually doing something about it.
Obviously Admiral Ackbar should be appointed the interim military commandant of DC.

It's not a trap; it's sheer stupidity.
But some version of "See, Trump really is evil" is all they can permissively bleat on MSNBC.

It's not just MSNBC. You can see the same thing from commenters on this blog, except that they don't appear to have realized it yet.
Democrats brought in the National Guard to protect the delicate sensibilities of Democratic elite in Pelosi-rrection.
Trump brings in the National Guard to conserve Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness of the People and our [unPlanned] Posterity. Quite a contrast with resounding empathetic appeal.
"Except, that is not what is doing. He is having them patrol The Mall and other areas where there are lots of tourists."
I have no idea if you are right about this, Fredo, but I also suspect that you are just guessing yourself. However, let's suppose you are correct- even that would have an effect if it allowed the city police department to better use its resources in high crime neighborhoods.
Maybe it is a trap. A month or so ago, dems were leaning hard into the "Trump is trying to be a king" thing. Rachel Maddow declared him an authoritarian just a few days ago. So Trump uses this of all moments to take over DC's law enforcement, something that has a legitimate purpose, and that he even campaigned on, but that also somewhat resembles something a true autocrat would do. He does this KNOWING that the left won't be able to resist tying it to their "authoritarian" narrative. It's not like they can say one week, "Trump's a wannabe dictator," but then the very next week say, ". . . but this Trump takeover of DC is a great idea; I support it!"
Trump, You Magnificent Bastard. I Read Your Book!
The statistics don't even back up the "violent crime is at a 30 year low" claim. According to the DC police there were 1590 reported violent crimes in 2024. That's higher than it's been for most of this century. The numbers were higher 30 years ago, but that's not what "a 30 year low" means to me.
Also, using reported crimes is not reliable, because a lot of crime goes unreported, and if you think the cops won't or can't do anything, why bother?
Murder is a more reliable measure, because a body is likely to be reported. The Biden years had some of the highest rates this century. The rates are down from their peak in 2023, but they are still high. Yes, the rates were higher than 30 years ago, but they are not at a 30 year low. Yet somehow the media keep repeating that lie.
DC is a crime ridden disgrace. This is not OK.

This is how anarchic ideological revolutions end. With TDS in the rearview mirror, watch for a lot of silence, more defections and conversions, and maybe a few apologies. Just a few.
"Except, that is not what is doing. He is having them patrol The Mall and other areas where there are lots of tourists. It is all for show, not an actual attempt to reduce violent crime."
Having the National Guard on the Mall frees up DC cops to do their job elsewhere, which is for the best because they are the ones trained to do the job.
Law abiding citizens living in crime infested neighborhoods are trapped alright.
"If one violent crime happens in a very heavily populated area of the city..."
She still doesn't get it. Violent crimes are happening all the time all over the city. She obviously still believes that false talking point that "crime is down" when crime is actually up and arrests and convictions are what's down. In fact, a big reason why violent crime is up is that arrests and convictions are down. There has been reduced consequences for comitting crimes.

Actually, you shouldn't be. Trump totally has the legal authority to do this. (Remember, the District of Columbia is not in a state, it's in federal jurisdiction.)
They marched off a cliff and claim it was a trap.
Someone has to set a trap, and dems are forever "victims".

Neither do I. Who would? But many people think it's appropriate and overdue under these circumstances.
Well, John Kennedy publicly said back in January that the new GOP strategy was to just keep the Democrats talking. Looks like it's worked so far.
Crime Grades violent crime map for Washington, DC. The heart of the city and the tourist areas look pretty bad.
I don't think it's really a trap -- Democrats are just stepping on that rake all on their own. Trump is, yes, a great showman and he does often bait his enemies into saying stupid, self-refuting stuff. But so far, about seven months into Trump's second term, Trump actually seems to be much more interested in actually doing stuff than he is in scoring rhetorical points. Seeing as Trump is a real estate developer who bet on the revitalisation of New York City when it was mired in grime and crime in the 1970s (e.g. his work on the Hyatt Grand Central project from 1975), the most straightforward reason for his taking over policing in DC is that he knows from long experience that petty street crime kills cities, crushing petty street crime brings them back, and he really likes cities. Despite his golf resorts, he is, at heart, a city man, not a country man.
For the most part crime is down in American cities. The National Guard doesn't need to be called. More funds need to be routed to the police. But using the military is pretty drastic and should not be used unless there is an out of control riot. But using them because of general crime is IMO a misuse of the military and in some ways disrespectful of the people living in the cities because it essentially puts everyone under Martial law. FBI data shows the top ten cites with the worst crime are:
Memphis, TN
Cleveland, OH
Toledo, OH
Little Rock, AR
Peoria, IL
Springfield, IL
Detroit, MI
Akron, OH
Beaumont, TX
Rockford, IL
Most homicides are:
New Orleans, LA
Detroit, MI
St Louis, MO
Baltimore, MD
Oakland, CA
Cincinnati, OH
Cleveland, OH
Atlanta, GA
Philadelphia, PA
Would Trump release the National Guard or military to Missouri, Georgia, Ohio or Louisiana in the same way he did in DC or threatens to in NYC and LA [which are way down the lists]? No way. They are red states.

Trump, You Magnificent Bastard. I Read Your Book!
I finally read his book, Art of the Deal, a couple months ago and mentioned it in a comment here.
There is nothing in the book that is inconsistent with anything he has said over the past dozen years as a candidate and as president. It is a magnificent book
The ghost writer says that Trump's participation was close to zero. Trump says he participated. I have no idea how much he participated, 0 or 100% or more likely something between.
If he did not participate, that is one hell of a ghost writer. The book feels as if it was written 100% by Trump. It seems to capture him perfectly.
It was published in 1987 when we only knew him as a developer. It was on the NYT best seller list for 48 weeks, 13 of them at #1. There is a reason for that.
It is just a great book whoever did or did not write it.

Matt,
He has no authority to call out the guard anywhere in the US without a specific request by that state's governor.
DC is the exception because, as a federal district, he is essentially DC's "governor" (or as close as they have to one)
John Henry
Has anyone thought to inquire as to what guard unit is patrolling DC and what their normal mission is?
I finally did. They are not some rando guard unit. They are the District of Columbia NG unit. Their specific mission, that they train for, includes protection and continuity of federal govt. In addition to generic NG functions.
Several companies of military police, for example. These are trained in maintaining order not just among military but among civilian pops as well. Probably has a bunch of regular cops in it.
In other words, people who are trained to patrol streets.

Speaking of SF, I was years old when SF told heir to leftist domestic terorrism, Chesa Boudin, to GTFO because they and we don't want leftist domestic terrorists letting career criminals, illegal immigrants, and even more leftist domestic terrorists controlling our streets either.

It's not a trap. These people simply didn't care about fixing the problem until Trump said he would fix the problem. Then they decided to claim it wasn't a problem as their excuse for doing nothing. Doing nothing wasn't as bad as making excuses for having done nothing, continuing to do nothing, and trying to stop anyone that tried to do something.
Do we want our streets patrolled by the military?
When the option is walking the streets with someone in our military or walking it with someone that will assault me and steal my property; I'll take the person from the military everyday of the week. The same goes with the police officer that patrols my neighborhood, who I often have breakfast with on the weekends. If you don't like it, find another neighborhood to rob. My only complaint that in doing this in DC, they had found another place to rob.

> He has no authority to call out the guard anywhere in the US without a specific request by that state's governor.
Thanks for the clarification. My response was to Trump's recent comments of plans to expand a federal presence in New York City and Chicago.
Homicide rate DC 1960 was 10/100m, in 2024 27/100mm
Homicide rate US 1960 was around 5/100m, in 2024 still around 5/100m
In 1960, there was no gun control anywhere in the US other than NYC and a few other localities. A 12 year old kid could buy a rifle out of the pages of Boys Life. I could even sign up to sell Grit magazine in BL and win a free .22 rifle if I sold enough subscriptions.
In 1954, Burgundy Farm school in Alexandria had its own rifle range. I learned gun safety and how to shoot a 22 there. Not as an after-school activity but right along with English, math and everything else. As someone mentioned, it was then, and is now, a very "progressive" school. Though progressive had a different meaning then.
In 1965, I could go to a used artillery lot in Alexandria over near the airport and, as a high schooler, buy a 37mm anti-tank cannon for a couple hundred bucks. No questions asked. (Other than by our parents. "You want to buy WHAT!?!?!?!?") Parents not govt are what prevented me from having my very own anti-tank cannon.
I could have bought a much larger howitzer, no questions asked if I had the money and something to tow it with.
Thinking on it now, I probably could have taken in to Marshall HS, Tyson's Corners VA and worked on it in shop class. We had kids that brought in rifles to work on.
I don't see that it matters much whether DC is decreasing to 27 murders/100/m or increasing. Whichever direction, it is still waaaay to much.
John Henry
Is the National Guard really limited to the Mall and central areas of DC? I suppose it is possible, as some commenters said above. Following up on other commenters, then wouldn't it be in Mayor Bowser's interest to flood the crime-ridden areas with the freed-up cops, and get credit for improving those neighborhoods?
As James Taranto used to say, HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
How progressive was Burgundy Farm School?
Progressive enough that when a 3rd grade classmate brought his father's wwII "Grease Gun" (M-3 45 Cal submachine gun) to class one day for show and tell, our teacher Maxine Ropshaw (we called teachers by 1st name) knew enough to say "Excuse me, Greg", take the gun from him, rack the bolt, check the chamber then give it back to him to talk about it.
She was some teacher. It would not surprise me if she could have field stripped it. In the dark.
Point is, we not only did not panic about Pop-Tarts chewed into a vague pistol shape. We didn't get excited about a working, for sure stolen, probably illegal, submachine gun in a 3rd grade classroom.
Kind of makes one long for the good old days.
John Henry
Matt,
There may be exceptions. I think that if he declares martial law, he can call in the NG without the governor's request.
Much more complicated than DC where he is the governor, sort of.
John Henry
Brzezinski's dad must be so disappointed in what easy prey she was for such a simple trap. She walked into it like a bunny into a snare. If she ever read her daddy's books, it looks like she didn't learn anything about strategy. Then again, his traps laid for the Russians and Chinese seem to be backfiring spectacularly.
I meant as her dad looks up from Hell.
Ever since Trump announced that he was federalizing DC and bringing in the NG I have been sorely tempted to tell my liberal friends that, "This is it. You better get out of the country while you still can. These are the opening moves of the coming dictatorship! Why do you think he is doing this in August? Because most of congress is out of town. And if they did try to convene to stop him, well what do you think the NG is really in DC for?!" But that would be a fell deed.
"Would Trump release the National Guard or military to Missouri, Georgia, Ohio or Louisiana in the same way he did in DC or threatens to in NYC and LA [which are way down the lists]? No way. They are red states."
I'm going to make a wild guess that the cities listed are ran by democrats. And that if he did deploy the NG (assuming he had the authority) that most of the people in the state would have no problem with it.
But I did tell some of my liberal friends, right after Trump won the election, that I would put in a good word for them and try to keep them out of the camps.
I object to the word “duped.” To the extent they were duped, they duped themselves. To the extent they are entrapped, they built that trap, set it, and closed it on themselves. Taking the 10% side of a 90-10 issue is not winning politics in a democracy. Or a republic.
Would Trump release the National Guard or military to Missouri, Georgia, Ohio or Louisiana in the same way he did in DC or threatens to in NYC and LA [which are way down the lists]? No way. They are red states.

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!!!
They were duped a long, long time ago.
Now they’ve been dipped… in shit… dipshits all.
Do democrats have any morals.
For those of you wondering if Trump can send troops to fight crime in other cities besides DC: His rationale would probably be a very stretchy interpretation of the Insurrection Act, specifically 10 USC 253:
"The President, by using the militia or the armed forces, or both, or by any other means, shall take such measures as he considers necessary to suppress, in a State, any insurrection, domestic violence, unlawful combination, or conspiracy, if it—
(1)so hinders the execution of the laws of that State, and of the United States within the State, that any part or class of its people is deprived of a right, privilege, immunity, or protection named in the Constitution and secured by law, and the constituted authorities of that State are unable, fail, or refuse to protect that right, privilege, or immunity, or to give that protection; or
(2)opposes or obstructs the execution of the laws of the United States or impedes the course of justice under those laws."
I could see Bondi drafting a brief that says someplace like Chicago is denying its citizens the privs and imms of citizenship (eg the right to live) and, because of the depolicing statutes, is denying them recourse to the courts.
Might not survive the trip from district court to USCA to SCOTUS, but would make those cities spend their money on lawyers.

Chris Mathews was fired by MSNBC for hitting on Laura Bassett on two occasions, once in 2016 when he asked her : "Why haven't I fallen in love with you yet?"
Another time in 2017, he asked her if she "was going out tonight," after complementing her on her red dress.. Serious stuff! She wrote about these incidents in GQ in 2020, which means that, like many of us, she didn't like Mathews much.
But Chris was an equal opportuntiy bad guy, bad mouthing Hillary and Elizabeth Warren as well.
In 1957 President Eisenhower, through Executive Order 10730, federalized the Arkansas National Guard and deployed 1,000 paratroopers from the 101st Airborne Division to Little Rock.
The troops were sent to enforce the federal court order to desegregate Central High School and ensure the safety of the Little Rock Nine.
He is having them patrol The Mall and other areas where there are lots of tourists.
And if Trump wasn't having them patrol the The Mall and other areas where there are lots of tourists, you'd bitch about that, too.
Falling into a Trap? The Democrats are always defending criminals and pooh-poohing punishing criminals. Why do you think they're always trying to get rid of bail or defunding the police?
Trump has forced the issue into the headlines and Democrats can't do their usual "help criminals and stay silent" routine.
Ouroboros effect.
The same liberal/leftist who loved Biden for bringing 25,000 NG troops in Jan 2021 and keeping them there for 3 months, are the same ones complaining about "Trump's facist militarization". As Trump says "They're insane". I'd add: "Criminally insane".
Chris Matthews was always untrustworthy scum. He'd buddy up to Conservatives to get ratings, then lie about them and call them racist later. That he turned out to be "Mr. Sexual Harrassment" didn't surprise me at all. You can't be an aide to a corrupto-crat like Tip O'Neill and be a decent person.
Mr. Mosby - it doesn't matter whether Trump's interpetation is rock solid or weak. Our 700 District Judge rulers will have the last say. The are "The deciders".
Ocean - Trump has baked the Hawaiian Judge into the cake at this point. He will just keep appealing, or finding little-brother-in-the-back-seat ways of obeying the ruling while disobeying it. And he will also do photo ops of federal agents chowing down on Al's Italian Beef, or Guardsmen with their feet up at the Soldier Field grandstands, while Johnny Belisario from Fox interviews black people on the South Side demanding the agents and troops go down there and get to work.
Even if he loses the court fight, he wins the battle for public opinion.

Really? Trump called in the Calif. National Guard to patrol the streets of LA, over not just lack of the governor's request but his specific objection, just a few weeks ago.
If you want to catch rabbits, you bait the trap with carrots. If you want to catch Democrats, you bait it with an opportunity to celebrate crime.
Matthews was the least crazy, but his mancrush on Obama was still pretty severe,
The "Trap," of course is what we have all been observing and discussing since January: Trump takes on a problem that has been caused, exacerbated or ignored by the Dems. The American people recognize the problem and support Trump's efforts to solve it, thereby (because of their extreme TDS) forcing his opponents to take the 20% side in yet another 80/20 issue. They just can't help themselves, bless their hearts.
Listened to several hours of NPR this afternoon. They were heavy into the 'DC crime is down ("30 year low")' narrative. Oh, and "homeless" is now "the unhoused".
