The effeminate European government Beta fears the Chad American entrepreneurial underdog. Merz might have better luck with Von Der 'Layen'...who, incidentally, was kicked out of the Trump meeting with EU leaders.

Trump = stud

I confess, I had no idea who Merz was. He's the new Chancellor of Germany.

Pretty funny to see germans making eyes at the Italians, only for the Italians to ignore them and go with that hot new American boy.

Vance said...

Also: Wasn't it Italy that had the press that was openly mocking Joe Biden, even putting on skits with a stand in Joe who kept falling down or something? Like the kind of stuff SNL used to do decades ago? I wonder how much they are mocking Trump seducing their prime minister?

She does the best eyerolls of any current leader! Her expression while the German guy droned on the other day was priceless. I have a soft spot for her especially because she was the only "leader" compassionate enough to actually go fetch our "leader" and lead him back to the group he was supposed to be with when he needed help. She was very kind. One can't help but see she admires Trump and is repelled by the sissy men of Europe (yes I'm including England).

Seems silly. I like mocking the Germans as much as anyone, and I like Giorgia Meloni quite a lot, but if you watch the video with the sound off and ignore the animations, it's a lot more neutral. How long were they sitting there? An hour? More? How hard is it to stitch together a few five second clips to tell a completely misleading story? Meh.

re Amadeus 48 Yes, astonishing. Though certainly part of it has not been simply the increase in Italian competence, but the substantial decline in the connection with reality of the German, French, English and other leaders starting with Angela Merkel.

“the substantial decline in the connection with reality of the German, French, English and other leaders starting with Angela Merkel.”
Is that because of the devastating effect WW2 had on their psyches? This would be the post WW2 generation of European leaders. Merkel was born in 1954.

Eva Marie said...

Merz was born in 55 and Macron and Meloni in 77 and Starmer in the early 60s. I wonder how much their generational experiences affect them. (Trump in 46)

RCOCEAN II said...

Its all rather amusing to portray this as a HS behavior, but Meloni has substantive disagreements with Fred Mertz over Ukraine. She's much less hawkish, and as expressed reservations over sending NATO troops or binding security guarantees.

Besides, no one seems to like Fred Mertz, even the German voters have soured on him. And of course, the stereotypical Italian dislike of the Germans, no doubt plays a part.

Lazarus said...

Memories of post-war austerity (more second- than first-hand) may have marked Merz and Starmer, but not Macron and Meloni, but it may not so much be WWII as the end of the Cold War that distinguishes the leaders. For Merz and Starmer, the Cold War was part of their adult experience. For Macron and Meloni, it wasn't.

Also, Merz and Starmer came out of the old post-WWII two party system -- one Conservative/Christian Democrat/Gaullist party and one Labour/Social Democratic party. Macron comes from the breakdown of that system. In a way, he was the breakdown of the system. It's similar with Meloni, though Italian politics were different from the general European model.

chuck said...

And vice versa. I heard German veterans of WWII disparage the Italians and praise the Finns. And they mistook my accent for Finnish :) Not sure what that says about my English.

no just rebranding Macron came out of the Socialist party, that was in bad odor after Bataclan, so En Marche, of course he has a party to the left, the old communist headed by Melenchon, Meloni comes from a genuine splinter party that was part of the Berlusconi Salvini coaliton,

As Chancellor, Friedrich Merz has taken steps to ensure fiscal responsibility and border security, and reiterated the post-war German obligation to the Jews. He is a staunch supporter of the European Union, NATO, and the international rules-based order. Merz has advocated for a closer union and "an army for Europe".

Merz is 70 years old, has been married to his wife Charlotte since 1981, and they have three children, so the TikTok tale of jealousy is bullshit. Merz can be seen reacting to Trump's lies, so he dislikes Trump and our president's decision to impose tariffs and his failure to provide weaponry to Ukraine to convince Putin to shut down the war.

Giorgia Meloni is the Prime Minister of Italy. She is a conservative who doesn't understand that Donald is a member of the Narcissistic Party. When Trump spoke, all the men around him had a grim look on their faces, while Meloni, who spent her life convinced of her attractiveness, was easily flattered by Trump's attention.

Did we not JUST have a post on cultural differences?

What makes you think, gad, that Meloni - who I believe is proving effective as a PM - is incapable of recognizing flattery? It's it because she's a WOMAN?

Perhaps your problem is that you don't see why the non-conservatives in the crowd might look "grim" when confronted by Trump, and why a conservative (by Euro standards, which is about as far as Trump qualifies for the label as well) might feel more affable toward him.

Jamie said...

Inga, I've been here at least as long as you have. Are you saying that you weren't a Biden supporter? Because your latest comment says that you were... despite his senility.

Meanwhile, point to one public appearance by Trump that trumps - so to speak - Biden's in The Debate. Or the Roomba'ing around looking for doorways. Or, since we're on the subject, Meloni's gracious shepherding of Biden back to where the cameras were - something she clearly didn't feel Trump required.

If Trump isn't "all there," he's clearly the most effective dementia patient in the history of the country. Meanwhile, your side of the aisle continue to put forward ridiculous characters who can't even distinguish themselves on their own - only as they contrast with Trump.

I supported any Democrat who would run against Trump. I said numerous times that Biden was senile and as I said i also would’ve supported the dog catcher against Trump. Trump is as senile as Biden ever was and as for his physical health he has every chance of dying as soon as or even before Biden.

Meloni is a nice woman, you could see that when she helped poor Biden back to the group. It was pretty obvious in the way she dealt with Trump she was also being kind to a senile leader.

Plus she and her fellow European leaders needed to keep Trump happy with flattery and make him think they respect him (which I doubt) because they need the US to be on board with them with Security Guarantees for Ukraine

Google AI on Trump’s cognitive decline…

“Some actions and behaviors that have raised questions and prompted discussion include:

Speech patterns: Some have described Trump's recent speeches and remarks as rambling, incoherent, or tangential, with instances of him losing the thread of his thoughts or digressing into unrelated topics. Computer analysis has reportedly shown an increase in the use of all-or-nothing terms, negative words, and swear words in his speeches compared to previous years, which some experts consider potential indicators of cognitive changes or disinhibition. According to The New York Times and Stat News both reported similar findings.

Instances of apparent confusion: There have been reports of instances where Trump seemingly forgot the presence of individuals standing nearby, or appeared to confuse different individuals in public statements. One example cited is confusing Nikki Haley with Nancy Pelosi.

Physical behavior: One incident, described as "strange behavior in Philadelphia," involved him abruptly deciding to act as a DJ, which some experts interpreted as a potential sign of impulsivity and "accelerating cognitive decline". There have also been mentions of a "strange gait" and a noticeable decline in coordination over recent years, with a specific "telltale" sign in his right leg noted by one expert, according to US Express News, cited by The Economic Times.”

More from Google AI…

Here are some examples cited in various reports:
Rambling and incoherent speeches: Trump's speeches have been described as rambling and difficult to follow, with frequent digressions that lose the original thread of thought. Some reports suggest his speech patterns have become less linear and more tangential or circumstantial.

Difficulty completing thoughts and sentences: He has been observed struggling to complete words or sentences, a phenomenon some refer to as phonemic paraphasia.
Memory lapses: Examples include forgetting or mixing up names (like confusing Nancy Pelosi with Nikki Haley), or making factual errors like claiming he was still president in 2021. A montage of his memory gaffes was even played during a hearing related to the Hur report.

Unusual or impulsive behavior: Reports have mentioned instances like swaying silently to music on stage for extended periods, or an abrupt decision to play DJ at an event as potential signs of impulsivity and accelerating cognitive decline, according to some experts.
